  1. Heard some coho were out in the area , yep 6 less in the water. They are running large this year too. First fish waited until the back of the boat to spit out the fly which buzzed my sons head. Only fish of the day to get a 2nd chance. Starting at 1130am making it a little tougher but did ok . 6 for 7 , all fish in the top 20 feet. Dipsys 3 set 22 LOC could see the fish hit! . Nice day to be out . Can't wait to get back out tomorrow this time with Adam Tight Lines Jim
  2. wow those are just incredible
  3. Nice Josh , Thanks again for spending the time with GLSF. Looks like the coho are arriving here too , shallow water too.
  4. Everything is behind this year , up in Northern WI there are lakes that still have Ice on them , and the opener is this weekend. Last year with the unusually warm spring and the last year before cuts we had an abundance of fish and we also had a good crop of alewife 2 years earlier. How many of us remember how early those same fish turned up in harbors for spawning. I think once the weather stabilizes it will all fall back in place . Last week the trees were all bare around here, now with a couple of days of warm weather they are all leafing out. I think spring will get here really quick, along with the fish , give it a week or 2. you'll see.
  5. its not only Chicago , Milwaukee is dumping also.
  6. I have a set of these rods and they work great ! But at 10'6" they are long and its not very often I need to run more than 2 dipsys anymore. I bought them for use as a high line rod , over my wires. its nice to start with to get things away from the boat . They are a lot like a tree trunk though, I think someone else commented on the size of the butt. As far as which one is better , I do believe that the ugly stick are a little softer in the tip which could act like a shock absorber to keep the fish on. I prefer the Diawas to the ugly sticks. But that's just my opinion.
  7. Mark where in WI are you from? add it to your info.
  8. Ok guys I am the one in our group (GLSF Milwaukee) in charge of the net pens , the pens we have are a small pain to setup and I am looking for different style of pens . If you have access to or know of someone who does please put in down here or send a PM . I have seen a few from the Steelheaders but do not know who to contact about them. We want to ensure that the fish we put in the lake survive and make it to a healthy weight. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jim
  9. I can tell you that the bloodrun copper is very smooth compared to the opti copper and runs deeper. The opti copper is slightly smaller in diameter . and stiffer.
  10. I picked up a Convector cv55 high speed reel from tunas for the 450 copper I have , it takes less time to bring in the 450 than the 300.
  11. Ok lots of talk about copper lately, what size copper do you like to run and what lengths are your best producers. I run 32lb Bloodrun and my best lengths are 250 and 300.
  12. nice to see the coho , hope its a banner year for them!
  13. I have just bought a HDS gen2 Touch 7 , networks with my HDS5 , both units have lake Insight on them. The new Touch series have the Structure scan built in , Just another transducer to buy. No extra module. All of the hds units can run radar right next to which ever screen you have it paired with. If funds are freely available I would get the 12 but thats double what the 7 costs. As far as the structure scan looking as much as 300 feet to the side would really be a help in finding fish. Its a mighty big lake any advantage helps.
  14. Scotty makes stops that slip on the cable , I don't like the idea of crimping on the stop it weakens the cable. I set my clutch so its not overly tight . it slips if I don't get it right away.
  15. I am also looking at these reels , hope they have them at the sports show .
  16. Welcome to the site , I also fish out of Milwaukee , there are a few of us here. We're here to help anyway we can. If your looking to Join a local group I would be happy to get some information to you , on GLSF Milwaukee. Jim
  17. Would that be the Shuttle Hawk?
  18. As of now I would say Big lake Lures , then it would be Flintstones.
  19. Base maps don't show much if anything, its nice to see the wreaks and some topography . I have an HDS5 with Insight built in. works ok , but I did buy a LakeMaster chip before Garmin took over. They both show about the same info just a little different on each one. If you go with the base map you could pick out what you really want , either insight, or navionics, hotmaps ect. Yeah a base map can get you home just follow your trail. BTW I had been looking at the HDS8 and changed my mind to a HDS 7 Touch , its wider than an 8 , has newer software , and no add ons to buy if you want structure scan, its built in. Just have to get the transducer. Price wise not too much different, except for the add on structure scan unit for the HDS8.
  20. It's not somuchthe lead length matching to the speed, you have to find out what works well for you in your boat! All boats track and run differently, some will work well with a lead length of 26 and others will work well at 29. You will have to find out what works by running a specific length on all rods and see how well it puts fish in the boat. When I was fishing with you this summer my flies and leads worked but didn't do all that great. Now on my boat they worked very well. Could be they need to be shorter on your boat. spoons have there place , but I have taken most of my bigger fish on flies. I look forward to fishing next year, if you need a extra person to run a few more rods let me know.
  21. I presently have a HDS 5w/lake insight,I really like how the unit performs. Lowrance has come out with a new units. I am thinking about a HDS 7 Touch . It has the gen2 software and a wider screen. kind of like going from a normal tv to a wide screen. I originally thought about a HDS 8 but because the touch 7 is as wide as the 8 and it has the downscan / sidescan hardware already on board no need for a add on . Just the extra transducer. Have any of you guys had the opportunity to play with one of these new units? whats the good, bad and ugly on them? Does Hummingbird or Garmin make a comparable unit?
  22. you need to look and see how many parts for the so called domestics are actually made here. The list is getting smaller every day. Maybe if domestics were made here it would be different. How about that big expensive outboard, where is that made? only the names are from the states anymore .
