  1. I suspect it has more to do with the fluorescence than reflection, since polished metal will reflect UV as well. It is why you'll see sunbathers with silvered cardboard held to their faces. If it truly was the reflective capacity, chrome spoons should be outstanding off deep riggers.
  2. You and me both. Just bought the only 3 I saw at Goldcoast Outfitters in Port Sheldon during their sale last weekend. Great deal at 20% off. You might call them and see if they have more but I doubt it. I have a pair of the Cabela's and I much prefer the Daiwa. And if anyone does know of more, please PM me............. I pay more and am better looking.
  3. Hello Dave. I received a spool of the Tuf-Line Microlead at your Holland School but I can't find the length on it anywhere. I'm assuming its 100 yards but looks like less. Am I correct or not?

    Thanks,

    Kabet Sterk

  4. I've only been fishing the big lake for 10 years, but probably wouldn't have replaced my braid at all if it weren't for the tangles I keep getting.
  5. I've used Elberta clippers in the past and had no complaints. I'm certain that lead length can be varied but most tournaments limit it at 6 feet. Slider wrapping around the main line was never a problem fighting fish. Just a pain to unwrap.
  6. Most probes now are simply hung at the end of the cable on a swivel with the cannonball underneath, though I haven't seen the new Cannon probes. The old style Cannon Speed 'n Temps have an arm you weave the down rigger cable through. They also have a short length of cable with a snap you clip to the downrigger cable as a safety tether so you don't loose the probe.
  7. I have run them all from Depth Raider to Cannon to Subtroll to Fishhawk and by far the Fishhawk performs the best. That being said there are reports of a new product being introduced at the Grand Rapids Sport Show, that really seems to have potential.
  8. I would probably check online boards or ask around at a local tackle shop.
  9. The rule of thumb is dark colors on overcast days, bright colors on bright days but I don't think time of day or point of the season matters much. I've had Moonshine glow spoons get hit early when its dark and at noon pulling lines. I've had hot spoons stay hot through the whole summer and others that were on fire around Memorial day that couldn't buy a hit after the 4th of July. Put something out a few times. If it gets hit keep it out, if not then run something else.
  10. Can't say that I have. Usually my hot lure stops working, once I buy a backup in case I lose it.
  11. Not ready to go back to coated cable just yet and I'm optimistic I will be staying with the Torpedo cable
  12. I ran the Torpedo cable and antenna with no problems at first and could get much better temp readings deeper than with coated cable. Copper core didn't come apart but it was kind of hard to work with given its small diameter. For me several of the steel strands came apart and jammed up the down rigger. It was easy enough to clear the jam and the Torpedo people sent me a brand new cable. Don't know how well it works yet, because wind waves and work kept me off the lake for pretty much all of September.
  13. Same problem with Vanish on my end as well. Seaguar was a bit better but I'm very satisfied with the Gamma I've been using.
  14. Should have taken him out with you since fishing is good for what ails you.
  15. use both, never hurts to have a back up option for anything out on the big lake.
  16. UV Spindoctor with Big Weenie Last Brunch. Just seemed right to me when I was at the tackle shop one day and the clerk seemed intrigued by the combination as well. Ran it on braid dipsey and caught fish everytime out.
  17. Glad the lake settled down for you. Holland buoy was reading 3-4 footers when I checked yesterday morning.
  18. Seems to be related to time of day and whether fish are actively feeding. At first light with early bite, I have no problems fishing in the bait. After that if I come across a bait school, more than likely I won't get hit
  19. Thanks for the report. Nice to have it before the weekend. Not surprising they moved out considering the temps on the wave buoy this morning.
  20. Nice job for a slow day. I wouldv'e given you a shout but never got lines set due to mechanical problems.
  21. I'd tend to agree with the parasites. I'm no expert in fish biology but in humans, findings like that would be suspicious for infection or parasite or tumor. Mercury poisoning causes neurologic symptoms the most famous example being the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. So watch out for fish throwing tea parties.
  22. You are probably aware there are fees to launch boats. The same pass will let you launch out of Port Sheldon or Holland, but the Grand Haven ramp is not covered by the same pass.
  23. Had a great time fishing with Bob from Coralee this morning and an even better time catching fish. Not a bad day on the lake today. 9 for 11 with 2 coho's and all others were kings from 6-12 lbs. Ran out to 120 fow and began setting lines with good marks but couldn't get anything to go. Temp was still 62* 100 feet down in 120 fow and marks were hugging the bottom. Began trolling west and marks disappeared until we began seeing good suspended fish from 50' down to bottom in 170 fow when we took our first hit on a small king. Deep probe was reading about 52*F. Began a NNW troll and began taking fish from 180 fow to 220 fow with 180 - 200 being best. Down temp slowly dropped to 43*F. Pretty much only trolled N today with speeds 2.1 - 2.7 at the ball taking fish. 4 hits on 300' copper with blue spatterback Dreamweaver plug 4 hits on the UV spindoctor Big Weenie Last Brunch combo on dipsey set at 3 150' back 1 hit on rigger 100 feet down with white/glow spindoctor with Lemon-Lime glow KRW fly 1 hit on rigger 110 feet down with blue/chrome spindoctor with blue bubble fly 1 hit on dipsey set to 3 180 feet back with green/glow spindoctor and Big Weenie Frosted Luke
