Unless your in a sailboat you don't have much to worry about, just make sure you watch your rods and antennas when going under the bridge. Just like Fishwhisperer said trolling direction depends on the day but SW is a good place to start.

Thanks for the trip Terry, I had a fun time. Looks like we will be doing our own forecasting this summer again, I knew better than the forecast calling 1ft or less with SW wind 10-15mph that usually means lumpy for South Haven. I think my leg muscles are now tuned up for the season. But the Dirty Dog handles nicely and did not seem to slow us down. Its always fun catching a grand slam.

Some indicators are your downrigger cables and your diver rods. You want your rigger cables strait off the back of the boat, if they are cocked to one side or the other you are cross current. If your rigger cables are strait and your diver rods are limp that is a good indicator that your going with the current and your lures are dead in the water. Witch ever direction I go if I don't have a down speed indicator on than I make sure those divers are pulling evenly off the back like they should.

Well we got a late start for the day but were happy to be on the water. We launched about noonish and headed out to find the others from the morning heading back in. We were rained on for about a half hour or so but it turned out to be a nice afternoon. We ended the day 11 for 12. All fish were lake trout except 1 small king. We trolled the 45ft to 75ft range most of the day and worked a temp break from about 47 to 52 degrees. We caught fish on the riggers, 7 color, and dipsey. Did not seem to matter what we threw out the lakers were on the chew. All in all I had a great time fishing with Jarod and Randy and the boat ran flawlesss. I look forward to many great days on the water this year.

I still have some loose ends to tie up on the boat, however I may launch the boat saturday afternoon/evening to test and tune. But I plan on doing some fishing on Sunday if the weather permits....See you all there

I only need to put it all back together: -bellhousing -Shift Cable -Shift Shaft and Bushings -U-Joint/Exhaust/Shift Cable bellows -And reattach the rest of the outdrive that had new U-joints seals and yoke replaced. -Top it off with a fresh rebuilt prop The 2UNREEL needed and outdrive overhaul

You need to read the fine print on your insurance policy. Alot of boaters insurance does not cover recreational equipment aka lures/rods/reels. However alot of this stuff could be covered on your homeowners comprehensive. I just recentley visited my insurance agent and he went over my policys. I heard boat US has a anglers insurance thing but thats all I know. Since I have been boating with my family we have had 3 instances of theft. 1 time sitting in a caged-in drydock a crackhead stole the cd player. 1 time someone made off with our zodiac in the middle of the nite while we slept on the boat. and 1 time another crack head broke in and stole asprin and booze but no fishing equipment was ever harmed. We lock everthing in the cabin when in the slip unless we are on the boat ready to fish with rods ready.

If I can get my outdrive on my boat all put back together I will be there. No doubt about it, I'm not missing another good weekend of fishing.

Welcome aboard Peter, I also fish out of South Haven for Salmon and Perch. There are a few guys on here from the area as well. If you need any help just read through the many old posts on the site or just ask and well help you out.

I agree..... Love the ratcheting berts for dipseys but reccomend fixed holders for your leadcore. Last year I had some in-line planers in a ratcheting berts holder and on a tight turn and the rocking motion of a wave, the outside rod ratcheted up on me....I thought I had a fish on:eek: This year I am running a rod tree for my planers and leaving the berts to my dipseys

Another alternative to the kicker motor or the sea bags is to re-prop your motor. It only takes 5min to change a prop before you go fishing. Alot of outboard come with props that are designed for speed rather than trolling. As long as you can stay below the max rpm range of your motor you'll be alright. In some cases where you need to run a long ways to a fishing spot to troll this is not always the best solution. Finding the correct pitch can be challenging but you would be surprized what the right prop will do for you.

I saw one diving for food on Osterhout last saturday while I was testing an outboard.....There the coolest!!
