jdh Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Got my 5 fish but not how I expected. Started at 430 and went south. In 60 fow I was marking no fish no bait so I started moving deeper. Hit a nice coho at 5:30 am. And started getting steady bites. Overall went 5/11 I think. Started with a diver back 50, and downrigger at 25 with glow spoons. After 6:30 flasher flies started working on diver back 50 and downrigger at 35. Last fish bit at 11. Just for kicks I dropped a flasher fly down 105 and got bit shortly after. I'm pretty sure all the other bites were coho. And I saw multiple fish chasing bait on the surface. Found fish in 125-180 fow. 2.0-3.3 speeds. 6
zgrinder on Fin Warrior Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Fish on the surface chasing bait is a hoot. Brings back memories of my early days spring fishing coho with yellow birds out of Waukegan. 1
jdh Posted August 4 Author Posted August 4 Went to Little Point last night to try something out. Always wanted to get fish offshore without trolling. Gave mooching a shot. Method I used is a whole alewife on a 6 foot leader with a 3 oz weight. Drop it to the bottom and then reel it back in. Alewife helicopter spins Well, it works for coho. Had a tough time keeping them hooked but landed 1. Had maybe 5 or 6 bites? 3
zgrinder on Fin Warrior Posted August 4 Posted August 4 How deep of water did you give mooching a try?
jdh Posted August 4 Author Posted August 4 I was working 100 into 65. Was drifting south. Passed over multiple schools of baitfish being worked by salmon. 1
Reel-y-hooked Posted August 4 Posted August 4 port sheldon 8/3/25 a.m. 5 for 6 We hit the water very early as well and hooked up with what ended up being a 20.5 lb king before 5:30 a.m. We started in 125' and stayed at that depth running north south. Fighting the big king was very interesting in the dark. We ended up boating 4 more kings and losing one by 8:30 a.m. 225 coppers and high divers back 150' were our best presentations. Captains choice plugs, meat rigs, and a dream weaver glow frog ss spoon did the damage. 5
