Onekama Marine Shakedown tournament

Recommended Posts

Headed up Thursday with JWheeler to prefish on Friday for the tournament. Met his BIL Eli and buddy Chris and headed out on Friday morning. Action wasnt fast and furious, but we picked away at them and ended up 7 for 10. Had 5 Kings a coho and a laker. Big Kings were 10# and 15#. Headed in feeling good about our effort as none of us had been out on the west side this season. Went to the ladies weigh in to see the winning weight was 45#. So we went home and weighed ours and came up with 42# and some change, so we felt real good about our day. Finished the day off with a nice meal of walleye and venison tenderloin that Jason and Chris provided...Good stuff let me tell ya!

Saturday morning we blasted off at 7 am in some great conditions and headed out to our spot. Got on the fish, but couldnt get em in the boat. Started the day 1 for 4 i think it was and lost two big Kings. One that went 15-18# along with a solid 10-12# fish at the boat. Ended up picking away at em and finished 7 for 11 with 4 Kings, 2 Lakers and a steelhead. Not the basket we wanted to weigh size wise. Turned in 17.60# and were in 17th after day one....had somemore salmon and taters for dinner. No fish pics today.:(

Sunday morning we were greeted once again with some gorgeous weather. Headed out to the same location and got on the fish real quick. Didnt take long and we had the rods poppin. In short order we had 4 fish in the boat then it just died. We made a couple passes trying to relocate our fish, changed some things up, but no dice. So, we picked up and ran out to 350 and trolled out to 450. Couldnt get anything going. So, we made a decision to head offshore hoping for a break and some steelhead, a big king or laker, anything to get that last fish. We set down 18 miles out in 880' in some 52 degree water never finding any real break. It just cooled gradually as we went. Overall it was pretty uneventful trip, but did produce a 5# laker on the 4 color to finish off our 5 fish box. Noon came and as the wind picked up we had to pull lines to head in. Got in a little ahead of schedule so we dropped lines in 150' looking for another fish, but no joy. Headed in and weighed up our 25# and some change which landed us a 13th place finish, 2# outta a money spot. Losing those big kings on the day prior really cost us. We woulda had a shot at big King, a possible 2nd in the 333 and a great finish in the tournament. So close, yet so far away...Thats tournament fishing and we had a blast.

No doubt that we were so close, yet so far away. A real heart breaker. The silver lining of the weekend was fishing with some great company.:thumb: 9 lines 10 minutes to put out and get in...pretty darn quick, and we all worked very well together! Loved having Adam aboard, a true wealth of knowledge and an all around great guy:thumb:. We'll get em next year!

Great report---I also fished with Doc's Holiday in the tournament. Although the Doc came in 2nd with the ladies we did not find the fish on ether day. The weather was unbeatable even though we could not get the fish to co-operate. We ended up with two small salmon on Saturday and a laker and salmon on Sunday; certainly nothing to brag about.
