  1. Sorry Mike, just saw your post about today. I had to work so would t have been able to come down anyways unfortunately. How'd you do?
  2. Fished the channel out to 50 FOW from 2-5:30pm. Marked a bunch of bait in the top 15ft pretty much everywhere in the dirty water. Only hit was a largemouth on a custom orange stinger running 10ft down off a board with a torpedo weight in the channel. Didn't see anyone else in their hook anything either. Noticed that the Danel charter boat made about 5 or 6 passes in the channel then bailed and ran up toward Muskegon. I'd say its time to target the juveniles out deep for as long a the weather will let us get out there.
  3. fished it last night from 50-90, most marks in the 60-70 range about 40ft down but no takers for us, tried everything in the box
  4. Jason, I'll take one of the seat, mount, pedestal combos for $20. I'll send you a PM later today with my contact info Kevin
  5. correction, this is my cousin Zach pictured with the fish
  6. Quick trip out of Port Sheldon last night, got stuck at the ramp trying to launch as someone on the beach had a seizure and the sheriff boats were using 3 of the slips. Hopefully everyone is all right. Put lines down at 7pm in 80ft just south of the pier heads and worked west out to 110 with nothing. Decided to turn back in to try the 60-70ft range based off a report from Grand Haven from a friend in the morning. Had out first hit around 8:15 as the sun set on a green splatter back ace high on a mono dipsey set on 3 out 150ft...25lb king that split one of the treble hooks. Got reset and hit another big one on a 10in blue bubble spinnie with blue bubble fly down 60ft on a rigger. This one unfortunately got tangle in another line and broke off. Action slowed after that. Here is the 25lber...
  7. will do Mike, and no not in the derby. Which derby are you talking about? I never do catch the big one if I've entered a tournament anyways so I probably never woulda caught this one
  8. how long of a leader are you running off the spindoctor with the plug?
  9. Decided to drop in close and got lines set by 6:15 in 40 FOW. First hit at 7am on Moonshine Blue Flounder Pounder on mono dipsey set at 100 feet out in 62 FOW, small jack king. Only other hit came at 9:20am in 93 FOW on fixed slider 70 feet down on standard DW Carmel Icicle, but it was a pig. Set a new record for our boat with a 40" 28lber. Here's the pic... The best part is it was reeled in on this setup, a 6'6" med action Rhino rod with a fly reel that I use in the river on 15lb mono...yeah it was a solid fight
  10. Any reports from either of these ports from this morning? Looking at heading out tonight and trying to decide what FOW to start in. Thanks in advance!
  11. Thought I would post this diagram I made as there was a question about pier fishing for skams in GH. This is how to set up a shrimp rig for skams on the pier. The pyramid sinker holds the bobber is place so it doesn't float into other people's lines, this is a must when it is crowded. Larger bobbers work best as they are easiest to see and the fish don't seem to be spooked by them. When a fish hits this rig you have to run over to your rod and reel like hell to catch up to the pyramid sinker and get tight to the fish. You'll want to loosen the drag on your reel when it is in the rod holder or use a bait feeder type reel, but those are not necessary if you don't already have them. I actually think it works better to have more drag pressure than a bait feeder will give as it puts pressure on the fish as it takes off and the bobber slides down the line. Also I like 40-50 count cooked shrimp as it seems to work just as well or even better than the bigger ones that most people fish and I get more bait for my buck.
  12. Grand Haven gets a lot of skams. In fact, last summer GH out fished St. Joe overall from what I heard, especially in June. My luck as I've fished GH a lot for them the previous 5 years and then lived behind the beach in St. Joe last summer and could walk out to the pier every night if I wanted to. I definitely say St. Joe traditionally is better but those fish go everywhere! Also you can count on kings in May for about a two week period when the bait shows up but it can be hit or miss even then. Lastly, most say east winds to blow out the warm water and let the cold stuff roll in close but I think N, NW, and NE are better and they happen more often. As a bonus a lot of times they come with a storm or cloud cover which usually makes the fishing that much better. Oh and shrimp....cooked shrimp. Good luck!!
  13. I was on the pier this morning and got a brown and took a rip from most likely a steelhead. A couple dozen boats went out today, all went out deep except for two that just did circles out front to about 50ft of water. I don't know if they were getting much in there but they never bailed and went deep and they stayed until 11am or so.
  14. Fished it Tues night, Wed, and Wed night and there was plenty of bait, not a lot, but plenty to fish with. Kings weren't around unfortunately, only manage one coho and one very large perch fishing ales on bottom. Of course that's if you don't count about 30 sheepshead and 10 catfish, so plenty of action just not the kind we were looking for.
  15. that's a great fish to hook into for this time of year!
  16. does the unit work? or is it only good for spare parts?
  17. thanks gentlemen, every little bit helps!
  18. Hi guys, haven't been on the site in a while as I've been busy with school and chasin chrome on the rivers, but I'm currently a business school student and I was wondering if some of you could take my 2 min survey pertaining to fishing gear for my analytics class. Very much appreciate any help with this, thanks! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5WXJNGH
  19. wow that's an awesome brown. did you happen to take a water temp?
  20. Shimano Convergence are a great rod, I have the 12'6" model that I use with my centerpin reel in the river but it doubles for me as a great pier rod. I can chuck 4oz pyramid weights as far as I need to with it. Cabelas Whuppin sticks are also really good and about $20 cheaper if you don't mind the bright blue color.
  21. Here's a brown the guy next to me caught off the pier in GH in early May this spring. Long and slender like an atlantic but was the size of a king. It's lighter in color like yours. BTW this thing tipped the scale at 17lbs...in May...and look how skinny it was! Can't imagine what it would have weight in Oct/Nov. The guy quite fishing after he caught it and left to go get it mounted. He had only been there for about 45 minutes too.
  22. If you wanna cast spoons and such the 10lb power pro will work but I'd highly suggest bumping up to 20 or 30lb since it's the same diameter at 8lb mono anyways. For fishing live alewives on the bottom 10 or 12lb flourocarbon leaders is the usual affair when targeting kings. Make sure your reel has atleast 200yds of line though for those screamers that head straight for Milwaukee.
  23. agreed, they will starting showing up in good number here soon, especially the skams in close if the water warms up and then flips
