Best depth of water to be over: 28-32 Most productive troll direction: SE Depth of hits: rigger 21' down 45' back; body baits down 15'. Rigger lead lengths: 45' both riggers Number of fishermen aboard: 3 Best lures & colors: orange; CJ GOC reg size spoon; gold hot n tot with black back yellow belly and red lip; our usual j9 jointed rapala with gold belly and white stripe on bottom. Surface temp: 45-46 degrees Down temp for hits (if known): Troll speed: 2.5 -3.0 Number and kind of fish caught: 1 22.13lb king and 4 coho jacks; 5 for 5. Started setting lines from pier heads south so that by time we have all 8 lines in we are at or past water treatment plant. Trolled in 18-20' past concrete wall; nothing; did SB turn trolling north right next to Dimitri Georges in his awesome C Dory, "Fresh Fish" boat and nothing there..Sea Eagle had just caught a nice brown in 19' so we made another pass south , but 32-28' on SE troll. Got all fish in there on high line back 60', 2 colors and 22lb king came on riigger down 21', 45' back also on J-9 jointed rapala but on medium light walleye rod; what a battle and fun. Beautiful day, sunny. lazy 2-3s most of the time out of the SE; started picking up around 12;30; small craft warning is predicted for tonight and tomorrow. Detroit River Wednesday in mate Andre's boat jigging for eyes.

St Joe 4/10 - Hot
dan agnello replied to dan agnello's topic in Michigan Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
We found out last year in Erie west basin that walleye wanted a hot speed also. We ran same 2.4 to 2.9; 4 trips 66 ‘eyes’. Unheard of; walleye speed is always like 1.8 to 2.3 or so. Work speed. If you get a hit on starborad side while turning left (where SB lures will speed up) then you were trolling too slow. Likewise if port side goes off on that same turn you are trollong too fast, etc. The slogan for driving, “speed kills” works for fishing too. -
St Joe 4/10 - Hot

I was going to do South Haven because a Sunday report showed 2 man limit in 4 hours, but I was pretty sure the heavy Monday NNW wind would blow a lot of the warm water (that came up from weekend SW 70 degree winds) south. I guessed correctly; also Fishin Hole said they were in. Better get them in next few weeks or so before they move out to deeper water. When they school up real tight in shallows they are easier pickings like walleye. Most fish were caught between the brown house on the hill to the blue house just before the concrete wall. Don't be afraid to run a little hot like I said, 2.4-3sog. Capt Dan out -
Got 3 man limit in 4 hours: 8:30-12:30. 17 for 20; threw back one foul hooked and one on when we pulled lines. 18-20fow; 45-47 degree water; mile south of water plant to concrete wall; sog 2.4 to 2.8; uphill troll (north) and south caught same amount; threw back one foul hooked and one on when we pulled lines; partly coudy to sunny. Lazy SW 2-4s, to lazy 2-3s to build up chop 2-4s starting around 11:30. J-9 Orange jointed rapalla, CJ King regular size SUV Skinny Minnie and glo silver spoon with yellow and black ladder (yellow killer) back all took fish. Rapala on rigger down 10’ and on board out 60’; 2 2colors and lime green size “0” dipsey on 3 back 30’ took fish. No hits on CJ GOC or White lighting spoons. Cloudy to partly cloudy; SW lazy 2-4s to lazy 2-3s to around 11:30 2-4 choopy buildup.

One SoHa Dock is In

Saw on another board that one dock is in. -
Thanks Very good. You always have to plan way ahead. Most guys know not to cross close behind you and to turn and run parallel to you or slowdown. Many times you run into boats that refuse to turn or avoid problems so you have to be proactive. In August n early September you run into boats that don’t even know what copper amd lead are so you have to be very vigilant and try yo be courteous and say please and thank you so they understand what needs to be done. Sometimes it’s hard to be nice. But, it works much better.

Nope, Fished to past concrete wall n nothing. About dozen other boats by us with the skunk still in the boat. One guys boat had 12, fished from chalets to Cooke with only 2 at Cooke: guy at end of pier had 4; guy in middle got 1coho n 1 whitefish. That wfish surprised me. Nice day on the lake n fished next to the ice later because it was acting like a vertical thermocline and was holding in 40-42 degree river water. Some marks but no takers. Water temp south was fine 35-37, n that area usually holds fish: but not Tuesday. Will be out again in SJ week of 4/9 in my boat and jigging for eyes in Detroit River the week after in one of my mates’ boat.

Fished from piers south to concrete wall. Got skunked. Few caught on pier; guy got 12 from chalets to Cooke; only 2 at Cooke.

Just found out from the Harbor master that the new station will be in the southeast corner of the south lot behind the existing station (In the corner between the paying and non paying lots). Perfect spot!

Just saw in South Haven Tribune that they rec’d $150,000 grant from Great Lakes Fishery Trust Fund and city will match it with another $150,000 from our launch fees, etc. New cleaning station will be located where you don’t need to pay launch fee (by the new BR fishing pier). Not sure where that is. By kayak launch? Station will include: 8 cleaning tables with an ACA accessible table, cooler washing station, commercial sprayers, draining racks, LED lighting and cutting boards. Vending machines with ice and bait. Supposed to be complete by end of July.

Usually the deeper you fish the shorter the lead. If you are fishing say 60' down around 20'-25' lead; say 100' around 10'. My 2 cents worth, and some days you can throw this out the window. But, like fishing bud Sea Eagle says with SWR riggers you have to let out the lead before you connect the release to the line. So no matter what depth you would be at least 20' back for 2 color SWR and 30' for 3 colors. Have a great 2019 season.

I use 8’-6” Wilderness medium action rods for my riggers. For dipseys 9’-6” Okuma medium heavy action. For lead and copper Wilderness and other rods with medium heavy action. 8’ up to 10’-6” (10’ & 10’-6” are old dipsey rods. Use braid on dipseys and braid with mono leader on riggers. Braid on riggers (and super thin SS rigger cable) reduces water drag and blow back when fishing deep. At Ultimate Fishing Show in Novi last Friday, got 2 8’-6” Wilderness medium heavy action rods for $25. Had to get them. Franks Outdoors always has good deals at the show. Used one to replace medium action rod for 200’ copper.

See my above post, I use snubbers. -
Got skunked. Since lake had turned over we worked skinny water in front of pier heads. No hits for us and didn’t see a wet net for dozen or so boats with us. Worked out to 100’. Water was like glass. Beautiful day on the lake.

Frankfort:Friday night/Sat morning: 3-5s from NW; lost big king at net Friday night n that was it. Just a few short rips. Fished Friday night straight out n to the point; same short rips Sat am: Herring Hole to the point. Sat pm Manistee; 100’-250; still 3-5s that started coming down at dusk. Fished 13s to 16s. At dusk big rip on dipsey that broke line at lure. Sun am in Manistee; fog n cool until around 9:30; sun came out n 10:30 to 1pm; 7 &18lb king and 7lb laker all on CJ Ghostbuster BTI meat rigs. 53 n 57’ down on rigger n 141 on a Dipsey. Riggers about 40’ off ball. All fish caught in 153’ to174’ with south troll; 2.5-3.0SOG.Fished 13s-14s. We came in at nine last night n only ones retrieving with no one at fish cleaning.Kind of sad. Lot of boats out this am and very few catching. One other guy with small king when we were cleaning. We had spoons, flashers/flys, meat out and all hits came either on CJohns meat rigs or spoons. Green frog bti is usually as hot as Ghostbuster but no hits. I’m low on Ghostbuster bti’s n meat rigs n will have to re-order; broke a hook off twice, tangles with copper, etc messed them up. Great trip with my mates n special friend Stan in Frankfort. We always have fun! Lake has settled down n tonight n tomorrow should be good fishin. But, according to Windfinder.com and iwinsurf.comTuesday through Sunday next week all windy, except Thursday. Good luck all you hog chasers. In Manistee, heard on radio Cowboy got 3 (2kings, 1steelie) in 14s in 110' n 1 of kings was 30lbs. Meat saved our day, n CJohn's is always our go to meat.

Dipsy Diver Colors
dan agnello replied to jake73's topic in Michigan Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
I use braided line on my divers. Usually black one and lime green. Not sure if color matters. I use usually an 8’ and 10’ 30# mono leader with a Capt John King shock chord. We get our share of hits on rhe dipseys;; not sure if longer length helps! Have seen captains use real long leaders on Salmon Showdown and handline them in. -
Heading up to Manistee and Frankfort for our annual 3 day trip sometime during that week. Weather will determine which 3 days, of course. We fish an afternoon early night and morning fish in each port. If u r planning on going up during that time, let me know n we can compare reports/notes. Text me at 517-750-7452. Thanks!
