  1. YOU HAVE TO WONDER IF ITS WORTH IT

some times you just never know until its over

only wish I would have got a picture of this boat trolling with the old two strokes big blue cloud following it

IN THIS CASE I CAN TELL YOU THIS PROJECT WAS WELL WORTH IT !!

you can find boats like this with one or two bad motors or no motors at all and have a great dependable good on fuel set up for pennies on the dollar of what a comparable boat would cost

OK WE GOT THE OLD STUFF OFF NOW ITS TIME FOR A LITTLE GLASS WORK AND A CUSTOM MADE ARMSTRONG OUTBOARD BRACKET

NOW IT TIME TO ADD SOME DEPENDABLE FUEL EFFICIENT POWER TO THE BACK

THIS BOAT WENT FROM RUNNING 45 MPH TOP SPEED BURNING ABOUT 50GPH BOTH MOTOR

TO A TOP SPEED OF 52 MPG BURNING 32 GPH BOTH MOTORS

AND ALSO TROLLING SPEED ONE MOTOR WITH THE OLD ENGINE WAS 5GPH WITH THE HONDA POWER WENT TO .6 GPH FUEL BURN

ON AVERAGE TRIP BURNING 1/5 THE GAS

  2. The 740 is a great unit these are no being discontinued by the manufacturer

we try to stock on display the latest and greatest units on display

so we are closing these out and adding all the new Garmin stuff

prices well below map= "minimum advertised price"

The only thing they have added to the 741 is the down and side imaging basically a stripped down chirp style unit (for a lack of better description)

but be assured there is a lot of new stuff coming from Garmin

  3. we have ordered the new display units for this winter show season and are closing out all our in store display units

all come with full factory warranty's and are a great bargain we can not post pricing here because they are below MAP pricing

    the units on sale include

    garmin

    model numbers

    7212

    5212

    4212

    740s

please call for pricing or check the calumet marine web site forums page VIP section for confidential pricing

    happy holidays !!

  4. This can be huge important to the boating budget and i am not talking about purchase price

    fuel economy is effected

but more important is the longevity of the motor

too much pitch a dirty bottom and you will have a bunch of these

This is a burnt exhaust valve out of a motor that was never overheated

the owner was told he needed a new motor

and if it happens before the warranty is up its not covered any way prop selection is critical as is keeping the bottom of the boat clean

for a lack of better description

a dirty bottom is like driving you car with the emergency brake on wrong prop is like a stick shift stuck in 3rd gear take offs are a bit rough

then end result will be exhaust valves in a new modern 4 stoke out board that looks like this (click picture for larger view) then click the magnifying glass (twice) to see the detail needed

the head of the valve got so hot the metal actually had started to melt and boil

and often can ruin the cylinder head itself Luckily in this case we where able to save the head with modern cylinder head rebuilding equipment

but the with rite prop and keeping the bottom clean this would have not have happened

  5. that's a great question thanks for asking

the price is not bad at all 30% more money but you are talking about a item that cheap to start with

I can find out exactly but a kit/assortment to fill a fuse panel is around 27 bucks

ever have a fuse blow on the water when you where in a tournament ?

    I have

I will have these all changed out in my boat by next spring

the harder it is to get at your fuse panel the more important it is to have these type of fuses

  6. went out of Hammond around noon

checked around calumet harbor by the fog horn both sides of the wall

did not go up in the river or on the old us steel slips

where we found marks on the fish finder we stopped but could not get any bitters winds had just changed

so we took a ride over to gary light was a little rough but still a comfortable ride in the cat at 30 mph or less

slowed down by the shoals off of pastrick di not see much on the fish finder so kept going

seen some boat off of the gary lite just about a mile or two north of the lite decided to go in behind the wall at the gary lite to check water temps and see if there where and salmon size hooks on the graff not much to speak of the water temp way up in the corner by the discharge was 65 but out in open water was 52 did not see much of any thing on the graff so went out by the other perch fisherman and dropped lines caught a couple nice smaller perch but was slow and had to work for them when the clouds passed it got COLD decided to call it a day had a nice ride on the lake and a few fish and great time with some good friends

it don't get much better than that for a day in November

  7. The Hewes craft proV has been around for a while but the extended transom version is new for 2013

The hard top just came out in 2012

there is quite a few hard tops around to look at but not many extended transoms yet

I had one on order but had to switch the production slot out for a different model I had sold that was not on order

I highly recommend a 150 or lighter motor on this boat any thing bigger get the trim tabs

all aluminum boats with 4 stroke motors could use trim tabs but with the bigger motors or added weight of kickers aft begs for trim tabs no matter what brand boat it might be

I know Al is performance orientated most people would not ever notice the difference

A calumet marine we know small changes can make big differences in results

    RIP

my old buddy COHO Harry He is greatly missed fishing buddy (last picture)

  8. The most amazing thing about the Honda is what it will do with a 3-4 dollar gallon of gas

up to 11- 21% better than it nearest competitor while in the lean feed back mode

the little more you might pay for the Honda is quickly returned in fuel savings

The Real reason most people spend money on a boat ?

They want to have fun out doors and put a smile on their friends and family's faces

this business AND CALUMET MARINE is "ALL ABOUT THE FUN"

  9. Good information Prop nut.

Do you strip old bottom paint and reapply? Have a 2452 I am thinking of having redone. But I have no way to get her off the trailer.

if you have room all you need to get a boat off a trailer is some boat stands

a bottle jack and some wood blocking

if you have the ability to do some of this stuff your self you can save some big money

its not hard just labor intensive

a must if you are going to slip a boat and don't want to cause some major engine damage if the hull gets like this

    needsbottompaint.jpg

  10. usually best to strip and start over

    ( but not always)

if you know exactly what's already on the hull you don't always have to strip/sand

    if stripping is needed

we usually take it to a place that soda blasts them for us

I just don't have enough room to properly set up a area where we can do dust free blasting

  11. Looked at the Sea Runner at Franks, and he was great to deal with, unfortunately the SR is to big and looking at smaller Hewescraft boats now also.

Hard to judge without seeing them though. :)

    Al

    Hi Al

    Frank Here

We had a sportsman in the yard when you where here wish I would have known the sea runners where too big

we sell a lot of 18sportsmans people just can not believe they are only 18' boats

guys love them for both small lakes and rivers and on nice days big water

a 18 with a 75 or 90 Honda really keeps the price way down as well

    Happy shopping Al

  12. bottom paints are a pain in the butt to put on correctly

but a real labor saver if done properly

a train wreck if not done properly

I like the new non metallic ecocide ablative paints

they don't have a expiration date how long then can be on the hull and not in the water like most metal based bottom paints

the surface wears off so there is no build up and sanding and stripping involved in recoating

most glass hulls have to be de waxed and all hull have a very specific surface needed to have the paint properly stick

special attention has to be taken to regulate dry times and intervals between coats according to temperature's for the desired results

often sand or soda blasting is required to properly prep the hull

before sanding with 50 grit paper to put hook in hull to make primer stick

    12-8C1AD961-607901-960.jpg

4 coats of aluma protect epoxy primer

on goes the actual biocide ablative bottom paint

The best place to get specs from is always going to be the paint co customer service tech line

call be fore you start the job pay special attention to dry times and temperatures put the work in on the surface prep and you will be extremely happy with the results

    NO SHORT CUTS !!

  14. That's not a easy job to do safely with out some equipment

If the rear motor mounts are bad usually so in the drive coupler

I am thinking you are opening up a can of worms and you might find a lot of other things wrong

just take your time and don't get hurt the motor with manifolds should weigh rite around 1000 lbs

jobs not done until the test run on the water!

  16. People ask me this all the time

and a common mistake made when getting serious about selling a boat is to wait for spring

fact is this more boat are bought and sold in the month of January than any other month of the year

The holidays are over and DAD decides to buy some thing for himself

the boat and sport shows are going on and we keep seeing adds for them and cabin fever gets the best of us

The best time to buy a boat is NOW between the time the kids go back to school and the holidays and holiday shopping starts

most cases winter storage is already set up and paid for more people are Christmas shopping for the family most boat owners have already forgotten hey even have a boat let alone are looking at trading or buying a boat

dealers will have one or two boat left over and need to make room for next years models motor manufacturers usually have special pre season deals that often can include special financing rates all new purchases will often include some type of storage for reduced rate or more likely free

so if you are wanting to sell a boat get it ready for January if you are buying and want the deal of the year get looking rite now

    great days ahead !

    every one knows

The best days of a boater life "The day he buys and the day he sells"

but a full box of fish don't suck either !
