Best not to use a deep cycle battery as a starting battery if you have a new modern outboard with a high output alternator
Most deep .cycles designed to be charged at a slower rate than a starting battery
Best of f both worlds these days is a battery management system ormsmart switch with a house battery and dedicated engine battery this system keeps the staring battery fully charged and automatically switches battery charge as needed but always prioritizes the starting batter to get you home

I love my new crestliner 1850 sportfish as it was My wifes choice.
I really tried to talk her into the hews craft. I wish I would have went witht the hewscraft but she likes the luxurie style of our new boat.
I should have just not asked her and done what I wanted but I have to live with her. lol.
Joe reality is this
IF THE WIFE IS NOT HAPPY NO ONE IN THE HOUSE IS HAPPY
We fully understand
Your crest liner is a great boat this post is not to bash any boat makers
But take care of it don't put a vinyl heavy top on it when it's wet in side
Let it dry in the sun when ever you can using a fan can greatly speed up this process
The secret to making a wood transom aluminum boat last a long time is to keep it as dry as possible and it's ok to get it wet but it is not ok to cover it up and seal the water in
Every couple years thru bolts like transducer bolts motor mount bolts ect need to be removed one at a time and fresh caulk installed
I don't like replacing transoms it's hard work
But we want to see our customers on the water in a boat it would be nice if it was one we sold but if it's not it's still a lot better than seeing a customer on the golf course
Our ultimate goal is to keep you in the game and stay in business
There is just not as much recreational money around to spend these days we have to make these spending decisions very carefully

FEQ*
Why do certain boat builders still use wood and other composites in their boat transoms
I don't know for sure but maybe they just don't want them to last forever
Take a look at this transom how long do think it would last
If you are ever in the market for a new boat give this some thought
At about 30% less money than a lund or a crest liner As well as most brands we usually see here in the mid west
Here is what hewescraft craft makes their transoms look like
Stop by and see one for your self
-
sealed all the thru bolts this one will last a lot longer than the original
-
Well put Frank.
I have done all that you are doing on the old silver one (221 isalnder)
I Have also rigged quite a few boats over the years and even rigging new boats requires some removal of flooring and panels. It can be quite a task.
I think there would be some good money in what your doing and alot cheaper then scrapping a perfectly good boat.
I have to agree joe
Let's look t some numbers
New 20' Lund Barron with 200 mercury varodo on it 70000 or mor by the time it's rigged
20 hewescraft sea runner with extended transoms nd Honda 200 on it 60000
New transom laminated with west epoxy not fiberglass grade A marine plywood
All new SS bolts 3500
New floor sealed with west epoxy and wrapped in hd vinyl up to the dash 2500 when done with transom
25' IO remove engine and out drive replace transom from inside reinstall every thing 4500
We have stayed in business for over 50 years by doing the dirty jobs when the economy is bad not just picking the flowers off the cake like the big box stores
They have 100 200 boats in stock room in the shop for may be 4 -6
We have two new boats in stock room in the shop for 6
We get out there and fish so when we rig a boat we at least have some idea of what this stuff needs to do
Big box stores not so much
Walk into a service department of a big box store and ask them if they can replace a transom on your boat
Let me know what they tell you?
Joe you know darn well it can be done
Lots of great people work at the big box stores and we are glad, they have jobs
What we are battling is the big box corporate greed they get these sweet property tax deals and sales tax rebates ect and some one has to pay for schools police and fire men
I think we pay I say we because this includes all the small mom and pop bait shops boat shops actually we pay more than our share and I am proud of it we are still in business the old fashion way HARD WORK and DIRTY JOBS DONE DIRT CHEAP
Thank you all our customer over the last 50 years that have made us survivors

FAQ!!!
Why don't more boat dealers replace floors and transoms in boats
Aluminum and fiberglass
There certainly is a big demand for it
Truth it they just don't want to work that hard to keep you on the water
They want the easy money sell you new and hide in the back when your realy need their help
Why do the big box stores have 50-200 boats in stock and room in the shop for a couple ?
They obviously are not after the service work all boat owners will eventually Need
And even then if it's a tough job they will send you down the road
NOW YOUR ON YOUR OWN!
Come And see us at calumet marine

Have you ever broken a rear pin on a church board here is a fast easy way to fix it up better than new
And yes these pins fit the tx44 as well as the std size
for any one that wants to try changing to the metal pins
made and sold by calumet marine or has had a hard time changing the clips we made this video to help make it easy
all you need a good pair of needle nose pliers
-
Got two of the floor panels wrapped in vinyl next we start putting in the new transom
-
Even the motor mounts on a out board should be removed and resealed
I can not keep up with the transom repairs that come into our shop
Because of this what's really surprising most boaters don't know and where never told they need to do this every couple years
It saddens me when a guy don't have the money to fix and scraps the boat
Some times they buy a used boat with the same problem
When a 10 dollar tube of good poly sulfide caulking could have prevented it all
-
Any one with trim tabs not know you are supposed to remove the screws that attach the trim tabbs to the boat and re seal them every three of four years
You don't need to remove them just take one screw out at a time and liberally apply new calk and reinstall the screw
This is not done ona lot of boats and a major cause of water intrusion into the transom board and or core that eventually ruins the transom and nesisitates replace the transom or scrapping the boat
This is also the case with swim platforms boarding ladders and transducers pilots
Basically any thing that's screwed to the transom
For more information on transom care and replacement have a Molokai at calumetmarine.com forums page under the mechanics corner section
It's always free and accurate information

I've had success hooking up to a heavy trailer and moving back and forth and hitting the brake, just need to make sure the trailer doesn't go flying or get damaged when it drops down if it comes loose.
I did the same thing but put a 3/8" bolt in in place of the bigger hitch pin
After I got it moving I beat it out with a sledge
No I anti seize the snot out of all my hitches

FAQ; my oil is cloudy in my TR-1 revisour How important is it to change
Calumet marine sells and sevices a huge amount of these auto pilots
Two things are supper important to keep them running rite performing the way they should and saving you money along the way drastically extending the life of wearable components
#1 by far is proper installation tuning and calibration
NOTE if a tr1 I's constantly flopping back and forth on the back of the boat from lock to lock
IT IS NOT INSTALLED AND OR TUNED PROPERLY!
YOU WILL HAVE COMPONENT FAILURES!
#-2 the special oil for these units should never be substituted with any thing else and when oil becomes cloudy or annually should be changed
From about any drug store you can get a large childrens medicine serringe and a 4-5" piece of tubing and suck the couple ounces of fluid out of the revisour and just replace it with fresh clean oil
No need to flush the rest of the system unless the oild is really bad the idea is to stop it from ever getting that way and greatly extend the life of the pump assembly
Calumet marine has all these components in stock
Although not currently stated in the owners manual
From our vast experience with these units it seems to greatly extend the trouble free operation of this system

Thanks for posting the pics!!! Any tips on how to pull the carpeting out?!
To properly remove carpet you should remove floor panels carpet is wrapped around edges and stapled to bottom
-
That really is a huge inprovements flux gate compasses are as out of date as a 8 track tape player
A gyroscope is the state of the art navigation
Some auto pilots still use flux gate with rudder sensors they quit using this set up in air planes in the early 70s
But I still have guys telling me how great they are
But no auto pilot is any good that's not installed and calibrated properly
Lots of opinions out there though and we try to be respectfull to these guys with there wild notions or the way things are
Do your home work pick the best auto pilot for your budget
Lots more info on
Or just google
Flux gate compass VS gyroscope
I hope they don't go back to using flux gate compasses in air planes again if they do remind me not to fly to Bermuda that has turned out bad more than one time

I don't know guys ??
If smells like fish it's usually fish
I think I would have to steal a boat super cheap to justify putting up with a two stoke you are talking 5- 10 X the fuel use let alone the smell
Either the hydra sport is priced to high or the sea pro is priced to low or both
That V6 4 stoke suzuki new is about 15 k motor by itself even used if scanned and it's never had problems is worth about 8-9k
Sounds like a lot more investigating needs to be done

Cant wait to see what this bad boy will do on this new transom
-
Looks great! I would almost bet better then new. With the transom enclosed in aluminium how did you know it was bad? Just wondering so I will know what to watch for. Rudey
first clue its going bad you will see swelling around the thru bolts where the wet transom board swells and bends the transom from freezing
this you can see with out tacking any thing apart them obviously after you probe the wood with a ice pick or small screwdriver this one when we could get at it was more like a 2" thick piece of wet carpet than a piece of plywood
by the time you can see cracking of the aluminum or serious flexing of the transom itself it way past gone , most cases dangerous to continue to operate
-
Just took the new transom out of the jig we put it in to keep it from warping as the laminate drys
We will cut out floor panels and laminate them before we cover them with vinyl flooring
NO CARPET
What do you think? Looks better than new to me let alone compared to black rotten ans moldy board we removed

All boats on used on the great lakes needs to have at least 2 bilge pumps
One smaller automatic to keep the boat dry one larger one depending on size of boat to evacuate large amount of water I case of a emergency
All bilge pumps need to be serviced at least annually and tested WITH WATER often
Just turning them on to hear if they make noise or operate electrically is not a valid test
In a emergency situation these pumps are a critical safety item that is often neglected
Read more about pumps in the calumet marine forums pages under mechanics corner titles
You have 3-5 seconds to decide
Death by fishing line
Both these titles are posts related to bilge pumps
Be safe out there the water is cold this year lots of ice
The fun is over if some one gets hurt
