  1. Navigating this "new" format is a nightmare. The "old" format worked fine for me. Please explain the need for a "new" one. I used to frequent this site often. Now; not so much. All you need to look at is how recent the posts are. You have lost a lot of participation. This decision may have destroyed this forum.
  2. A 16 lb King won the Big King contest in Grand Haven last week. September. Grand Haven. No one on another site thought this might be indicative of a PROBLEM. A charter guy wrote back and said they are getting tons of huge salmon. I'm a little worried. Are you? My take is the size is trending down as is the numbers of fish caught. I know some charter guy or gal will come back and say they are killing them, but what do you regular folks think?
  3. The advise in the previous posts are spot on. I have had some of my best trips in October in the past years. Steelhead and 6-12lb Kings taste fantastic out of ice cold water. I am usually the only boat out of my port in October. Rarely see another boat on the big lake. If you go out take care to be sure everything is in working order. Wear your PFD. Don't fish alone. The coast guard is your only option for help should you need it. That said; get out there. October/November can be the best fishing of the year.
  4. Got a couple of 8 footers myself today. Had to break out the big knife.
  5. The Moonshine Flounder Pounder has been my best over the years. Some days a no go, but overall it always gets the fish. Any thoughts?
  6. Losing 3 Flounder Pounders is worse than a root canal. Nice report. Thanks.
  7. How do you get your wire diver down to 220 ft?
  8. Diawa 47's and 57's last forever and work very well. The medium to higher end Okuma's are nice as well. Old Penns are cool ,and work very well, but not so hot trying to keep up with a Steelhead coming atcha at 20mph.
  9. I have an older pair of mag 20's. I have lost TWO probes over the years. None lately. I finally noticed that when running the riggers up that if they are swiveled out the cable winds up on the inside of the spool. As it builds up the cable will slip down to the center of the spool then continue to build up on the inside. When you send it down again you will have a kink that snaps the cable. Now I always run the weight up and down with the DR facing to the rear. That allows the cable to wind properly. I haven't lost anything since starting to do that. Try it and see if that works for you.
  10. Yes. One of the best ever. I have loved most everything he has done. So sad.
  11. Lots of logs, mats of seaweed and junk floating around here as well. More so than in years past. Maybe it just took a while to make it downstream from all the flooding earlier this year.
  12. Another reason to run Otter Boats. You fight the fish, not the board. You can run as wide or narrow spread that you want. 2 core or 10 core run perfect. My walleye boards are pretty dusty.
  13. It goes on the Blacks release you are going to buy in the AM.
  14. Steelhead have been all over the place this year. Historically a 2-3 core 100ft out and 300ft back using Steelie Stompers, double orange crush, blue, green dolphins, and flounder pounders have filled my smoker.
  15. I've never run gypsies before but I imagine with all that flashy jewelry they wear they attract fish into your spread. How long can a gypsy hold their breath or do you rig them with scuba tanks? That being said try setting your dipsys on a 21/2 or 3 setting. That should keep your lines away from your DR's. If the currents are bad they are tough to run unless you are going into or with the current.
  16. Ready to be spanked by you guys, but here it is. I really don't believe "loading" up a rod "buries" the hook in a salmons jaw. When you take into consideration the bow in your mono line from the rod to the DR 80ft down ; I just don't see a "loaded rod" setting the hook. I load mine too, but I see it as just a little less slack in the line for me to reel in until I engage the fish. A salmon "buries" the hook when it runs with the bait. I am now ready for my beating. Be gentle please.
  17. Glad to hear Walter still swims. Must be a state record by now! Going after him next week.
  18. That Steelhead may be Walter. We have lost him 3 times at the back of the boat. He jumps and looks at us and spits the lure. 20lb for sure. True story. Have not hooked him in 2 years. Maybe died of old age. Loved a Steelie Stomper on a 2 core way out and way back.
  19. Thanks for the report. Still have about 4 days of boat cleaning, backing and leaders replaced on leadcorenew mono on DR rods and lure choices for the hot box. A huge thank you to the company who removed the nets. I wonder why there was no coverage here about the event? Can't wait to get out and catch some fish!
  20. Gonna dust some in flour and fry in butter tonight. Mine are the dark ones. Hope to find some whites soon. Nice big shrooms in your picture.
  21. First trip To St Joe. Fished 1015-1315 25-30 Fow south of the channel. Speed 2.0-2.4 GPS. 4/4. Small brown on 3 core. Grey and Red Thin Fin. 12lb King on 2 core. Fire Tiger Thin Fin. 12lb King on 5 core. UV Moonshine Bloody Nose. Turned around north and picked up a small Coho on gold and orange Rapala DR 15 back 10 down. Going back next week cause we want some COHOS! Launch is hard to find. No signs till you get there. What's up with that? Nice facility though.
