Reel Advice

Recommended Posts

On the side of every reel there is a silver knob. Ever wonder what this knob does? This knob is a spool tension adjustment. By tightening this knob, it puts more tension on the spool, and will prevent gettting a birds nest when the line goes out to fast and stops. If you loosen it, it will let the reel free spool more easily. I adjust the tension on all of my reels. I let the divers out with just the clicker on and do not have issues. ;)

For those of you who have issues with copper or lead core getting tangled up in the reel, tighten this knob, and put more tension on the spool.

Tip - There is a brass disc on the inside of this knob. Remove the knob and put a spot of reel grease on it at the start of every season.

The only down fall to setting a diver with just the clicker would be if a fish hit while setting it. I am not sure if a fish would be able to hit one going down that fast.

I keep mine loose so don't try this trick with mine you will get a birds nest every time alll reels are well lubed and set loose. As I said I can cast pretty good with my clickers on. I guess I could tighten them up but I am happy with the way they work.

Using the spool tensioner as a drag is bad for your reel long term. It should be adjusted just tight enough to remove the end play from the spool shaft. Okuma has some new reels featuring a one way bearing in the spool tensioner to set as a drag, but your reel will thank you if you just use the line out clicker.

The proper name for this knob is called "Cast Control Cap". It is designed to adjust the tension on the spool for casting. Adjusting this tighter helps to prevent birds nests in the reel when casting. I use it for adjusting the tension on the spool when free spooling, not as a drag.
