  1. I run all copper and no lead core now. For a rod you can use most anything as copper is soft and will not damage guides. Diawa heartland planer board rods work great. I have found using a 10 foot ocean surf spinning rod worked the best. Reels depends on what depths you are trying to achieve. 75 foot reaches about the same depth as a half core, 150 feet reaches the same as a full core and 300 feet gets down to 70 to 80 feet about the same as a two core. Maniac is right the dive curves show it as deeper but at 2.6 mph with 300 feet in 80 foot of water i have brought up zebra mussles. Another thing to consider with copper is you don't have rot issues like with leadcore. Lead core DOES rot, some guys will claim it doesn't but it does. Depending on conditions lead core can last from three to five years. Four years ago(which switched me to copper) i had a problem with the lead core breaking by hardly pulling on it. called Gudebrod they said to send it in to them. their verdict is it was rotten and i had only fished with it a few seasons. Copper doesn't rot it will last as long as you don't loose it. Reels if you are looking at okuma reels a convector 35 will hold 300 yds pp 50lb backing and 75 ft 45lb copper. 45 series 300 yds pp 50 lb backing and 150' copper. 55 series 150 yds pp and 300 ft copper. Another thing to note is copper doesnt hang in the thermal cline causing the rig to fish shallower. Copper is fished just like lead core not off a downrigger. It can be run as a swr very nicely. Attachment from copper to backing is very simple. a spro number 8 swivel is used. tie a palamor with backing to one end. put about inch and a half copper through the eye of the swivel and twist it thight. Another thing about copper differnet manufacture make if differently. the claim is that howies is the heaviest out there. weight achieves depth. I was proven wrong two years ago by the owner of takcle haven in benton harbor. Otpi- tackle is heavier per inch than the howies brand. it is also a little thicker. but it is closer to the dive curve than howies. it is also twisted more which make tying knots with it easier. If you are using shimano tekotas the line guide is wide enough to use an albright knot instead of the swivel. here are a couple picks of the knot If you have any other question don't hesitate to ask.
  2. I was also taught to use two different lentgh rods. shorter for your lows and longer for your highs. The length separation is supposed to help stop tangles also. Don't know if this is true or not but have had few tangles over the years running four dipsies.
  3. I have been trying to get primers and powder for my 300wsm and can't get it. People are so afraid of the tax they are talking about and the hair brained antis bills that are going to be coming up that as soon as a shop gets some stuff in around here it is gone. Peoiple are stocking up. Its amazing how stuff is selling right now because of the scare. I have actually started doing the same a little, but am thinking i may need to get some more ammo and put it away.
  4. I plan on bringing my son up the same way my Dad did with me. i already have a 5' med action spin cast rod built for him. and he is only 8 months old
  5. ok here is aa couple pics of my in the late seventies the rod building i was seven and the salmon was 8 yrs old at benton harbor: i really have to learn this new scanner better
  6. thats cool mike i have a couple pics like that and if i can figure out how to post a pic i will post it tomorrow.
  7. No don't shut up now your on a roll, and i totally agree with you. You'll get my vote
  8. Unfortunatley you speak the truth. Thats all grandholm cares about is making her welfare fraud friends, that reelected her in, happy.
  9. Exactly my thoughts slipknot, I was just wondering if this was a state thing or federal thing and i think i have found my answer on their website. I hope the legislature in mighigan has more sense than some of the other states.
  10. so this is a state law in each individual state not a federal law? is i am reading it right?
  11. I have two 10 and two 8 1/2 footers and no problem with them in the five years i have had them. Where did you find they are being discontinued they still show them as actice on the website.
  12. neucleus the olny problem i have with the cannonballs with the fin bent is if i am running four to six lines off each side it is easier to tangle a dipsy when the cannonball is pulling out to the side like that. We used to always run bent fins, but i don't anymore with running all the side lines.
  13. Typically the line fails and breaks first. As far as a failure point i have not seen many fail in the close to thirty years of doing this. second it also changes the action of the lure by removing the split ring. making it a slower action. this may be ok on some days, but the design of the lure is to include a snap ring. With the snap ring the lure achieves the proper action. So do i take them off? Never! A lure that has a snap ring i run it with on. a lure without one can achieve the proper action without one so i do not add one to those.
  14. I'll take a stab at answering your question without a diagram. For your downrigger i run one rod on it to the depth i want it set to, with mono. Then you take a piece of mono 6-10 foot in length i usually use 8 ft. tie a snap swivel on both ends of the mono. Attach the lure to one end and then the other snap swivel to the line from the rod going to the cannon ball. pitch the lure ver the side and it will run down the belly of the line and stop somewhere in the middle. Or you can let the cannon ball donw 10 to 15 feet take a thin rubber band tie a half hith with the rubber band on the line from the rod pass the snap swivel through the loop in the rubber band the attach it to the main line. This will peg the lure in one place and when a fish hits it will break the rubber band. One thing to remember when a fish hits a stacker there will be slack till the snap swivel gets down to the lure on the main line so reel reel reel till you feel the fish. the lure on the main line will stop the stacker traveling down so you want to make sure that you use a snap smaller then the luer on the main line. 1 rod per rigger is what i run
  15. Exzct same results here SPRO swivels are the way to go.
  16. Very nice rig, and nice job on resetting it up. I do have a question for ya, I dont see many rod holder on the side. Do you guys over there use many boards and lead core or copper, or many diver rigs. I love the radar arch i was thinking of adding one, that could give me a place for three more holders.
  17. i think one of the reasons some guys say, espically newer fisherman to salmon fishing, "my arms were killing me after ten minutes" is the hand you hold the fore rod grip with, people hold it tightly. this causes fatigue. Think of it as you are shooting a bow try and keep your hand open or loosley holding the grip. I'll bet you notice a HUGE difference in the way your arms and back feel after bringing in several fish.
  18. 1978 when i was five on my dads boat. Man have thigngs changed from then.
  19. Outdoors man in jenison is going to be having their spring open house the first full weekend in march (like the 7th). They run some really good deals before the fishing show. also gold coast runs an open house the same weekend and they run some awesome deals on spoons. They open at 7 and there are usually a few guys waiting to get in to scarf up the new years colors. check them both out for wire rigs. DONT go to gander and buy them. they dont spool enough wire on them i made that mistake a few years ago and noticed they still spool them the same way.
  20. Never really noticed drag issues but i have also changed from church boards to offshore sst boards (if you are going to buy boards spend the extra 5 bucks on these) which pull harder to the side with heavey lines, but even with the church boards i didn't notice any real drag. As of two summers ago i got into running copper through a friend and this year am personally done with leadcore. But to get into copper it requires a little more skill and knowledge than lead core or the backlashes will make you want to chuck the rod and reel overboard. But i have increased my fish catch running copper. Hey to the OP if you want to go out with me sometime and see how i am running it i can take you out and show you. I try to have enough people on the boat to run 12 rods. 6 copper 2 dipsy and 4 riggers. or 4 copper 4 dipsy and 4 riggers. I have a cruiser also mine is only 23 feet but i have 16 total ro holder on the boat. I would be willing to take you out and show you sometime. send me a pm if you are interested. I fish out of port sheldon or holland most of the time. We are going to start in benton harbor (hopefully) mid to late april. I then move up the coast as the fish move. and possibly ending the season in ludington.
  21. Dive bombs attach to your line with a rubber peg that you pull out slide it over your line then push the rubber peg back in. The large lip of it goes forward and is supposed to kind of act like a diver pulling your line down deeper with the weight and plane of the dive bomb. They have them available in 1 2 3 and 4 ounces. I only use the 2 and 4 ounce ones. They will help you get a little deeper without adding more lead core. The way they are supposed to be used is let about 2 colors out and attach it. I let my leader out and then attach it to the leader before i let any lead core out. here is a link to a video showing how to use them: http://www.greatlakesfisherman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9966
  22. See you guys there we will be getting there around ten so my dad can get the booth ready. i wil be in and out of the booth frequently as i am not working the show this time. We will be at the MUCC booth
  23. I tried the eagle claws at first also. half season and they were off the boat. I now have two 8'6 and two 10' Blue Diamond roller rods set to run divers they work very well and are a little stiffer in the but section to get out to the side of the boat more.
  24. My brother Dad and I will be at the show both saturday and sunday. My Dad works for MUCC so he will actually be there all four days. What days and approx times are people going to be there maybe we can plan a lunch at the fish fry and get to know some people face to face instead of just on here.
  25. i am trying to post in the classifieds and it keeps giving me an eror saying i dont have the priveliges to post there. How do i place a post on a rifle i would like to sell
