  1. Just saw the artical on wood tv and was going to post it. I agree they can poison the whole river it will come back.
  2. Some good advice already posted. i am in the jenison area if you want any help. Dont forget the great resource of the pro captains that is going to be available soon at the fishing shows. the first one in the weekend of the 7th through the 10th in january in novi. i am heading there to work the MUCC booth friday night, saturday, and sunday. It is a lot larger than the one they have here in grand rapids. Go a couple days to catch as many seminars as possible. they usually have a seminar saturday mornings on setting up a boat properly, not sure if it is in the agenda this year yet or not. if so it is great info.
  3. Offshore OR31s. i put a 0r16 release on the back and a big jon barrel release on the front. these seem to pull the long coppers the best. I had the churchs and sold them all off, i hated them.
  4. right it can be rigged like that but it is meant for a boat that is anchored at the top of a hole not trolling with heavy gear.
  5. rayman those planers are used out west a lot. they are actually designed to be used on a liter line rig to work a larger river with a plug like a hot n tot or hot shot. when they are talking heavy line they are talking like 12 to 15 lb test. this way a shore angler has more access to the rivers. Luhr Jensen makes one also called a pink lady or hot shot board. I have used them on a few different rivers and they work well for that. i dont think they would have the umphf to pull copper or lead while trolling. I am using the orange off shore board. i tried the church boards and sold them all off on craigs list. They were just a pain in the a$$ to set and dove a lot with longer lengths of copper in heavy water. Havne't had a Probelm with my off shores. if they did come out with a larger one i would have them for my long coppers. it would be nicer to pull out a little bit better.
  6. nice job jim. way to end a season. when you start fishing white fish off the pier give me a holler. i would love to learn how to fish them.
  7. i use walkers also. this is the correct way to use them. We have been using them this way since the early 80s. if you wrap it 2 times it will not release properly. but if you do the U shape and pull it in they work great. when the release is set right you can pretty much pull anything, and have very positive hook sets. On my friends boat he uses Blacks/walkers. The cable terminator with the blacks release. They work great also. i am just lazy and dont like twisting the line. we have tried rubber bands and didnt like teh mess with them. Also melting rubber band in the cabin was a pita to clean up. Either of the walkers would be a great release.
  8. thanks everyone for the info. i got very lucky turns out that i just busted the hub loose on the prop. so a new hub and a quick repair and balance. 120 bucks and it is all fixed. thank God i wasn't running hard otherewise there would have probably been more damage. They pulled the access covers drained the outdrive pressure tested it, and everything looks good. So it is now put up for the winter. I can't wait till spring to get it out and run it again now.
  9. thompson 24 hard top. my dad had an old one and it was a great boat. could fish anything in it. Thompson is building the 24 hard top again with no wood in it. i had a link it is www.thompsonboatsdirect.com . they kept the same hull and depth(very deep safe boat) and it handles well. They are going to be coming out with a 26 foot in a couple years. I have been talking to them quite a bit over the last few weeks, and think when my truck is paid off i will have a 24 footer in my yard. Hands down if i had to make a choice it would be the thompson. sportcraft a quick second.
  10. Nice season jim last thursday we came in with a broke boat. see ya in the spring if you'll be at gold coasts open house.
  11. after looking things over in daylight it looks like i hit something. there is paint off the prop a dent in it and my plastic hydrafoil thing is all busted up. it really didnt fell like i hit anything though
  12. thanks everyone. I am taking my boat into Johnsons in ludington tomorrow. they have a mechanic that is godd with volvos. That is why i started taking it to them a while back. And my dad always used them when he had his boat in ludington.
  13. So tonight was the last trip of the season for us. The boat ran fine going out trolling all evening until i started back in to port. I have a bayliner with a 350 chevy engine and a volvo penta aq series outdrive. After running in almost to the pierheads at 300 rpm the engine reved up and the boat just about stopped in the water. I tried to throttle up a little and all it did was rev and only move at 2.7 mile an hour. We made it all the way to the docks and when i put it in reverse it poped right in and had great power in reverse. when i put it back in forward it just kind of started moving very slowly ahead. if i tried to do throttle past just putting it in gear all it would do is rev and not move any faster. Any ideas what is going on with my boat???
  14. Nice job jim. I seem to have one of those day on the 4th of july weekend. seems like when coming in every moron that uses a boat once a year is at the ramp with no clue what they are doing.
  15. doesnt look like it is going to be a good weekend to fish: .SATURDAY...NORTHWEST WINDS TO 30 KNOTS. NUMEROUS SHOWERS. A CHANCE OF WATERSPOUTS. WAVES 3 TO 5 FEET BUILDING TO 4 TO 7 FEET. .SATURDAY NIGHT...NORTH WINDS TO 30 KNOTS. NUMEROUS SHOWERS. A CHANCE OF WATERSPOUTS. WAVES 4 TO 7 FEET.
  16. good luck guys i will be pleasure fishing, if you can call it that. I have my father in law and my wives nieces boyfriend going out with me neither fish. At least i will have my dad behind the wheel. and maybe just maybe my brother can get back in town to work the back of the boat with me. what ports are you guys going out of? what has worked for me tha last two trips out have been green dreamweaver jplugs with a black ladder back on a 300 copper.
  17. well as figures two of my team guys cant fish this weekend, and my wifes family is coming up from ohio. I am still going to fish but not a tourney with three people on board that have no clue what they are doing. At least i wllhave my dad to drive this weekend, he isnt stable on his feet anymore but still loves to be out there even if it is driving most of the time. Good luck guys that are fishing it.and maybe i willbe out there with a bunch of rookies.
  18. Just wondering if anyone from here was going to fish their tournament. I was thinking of trying it this year. do they get a lot of boats turn out for it being a smaller one day tourney?
  19. there was a little boat in front of Port Sheldon pier heads wed night and all i saw to know he was there was his fish finder. i turned and went around him. 16 ft row boat with no lights. then when waiting in line to get out i saw three more boats with not a light on. I agree with the saftey check idea.
  20. thanks. if anyone is out in the P S/ holland area give me a call on 68. i am going out sat and sun mornings for sure maybe sat evening also.
  21. Went out of port sheldon at 7 pm and set up in 90 ft. went on a south troll and went 8 for 12. Most productive was a green black ladder back dreamweaver j plug on 300 copper. the rest came on lemon ice green glow prospoon pearl j plug adn a couple other spoons with green that i have no idea what the name was. two nice kings around 18 lbs and the rest were average size. Best water was 110 with riggers from 65 ft to 80 ft. and 300 coppers.
  22. i have had a few that the braid has broken and have run them without the second hook. just the one on the bead chain and have been considering cutting them all back that way.
  23. nice job Jim. You gonna be out saturday and sunday?
  24. for the money you can but okuma magdas which are better then the shakespeare. i got a couple and userd them once. now i use them to spool off my copper to retie the mon between the braid and copper. that is all i can find them good for.
  25. when i finally get it hooked up monday night i will have to go out and check out the calibration and get it right. thanks for the info on that i wouldn't have known about it Thanks
