    Blackened Salmon

I love blackened anything particularily fish (leave the skin on it's great when cooked crispy) If your like me and like to tinker with seasonings and refuse to buy them out of principal (nothing wrong with buying them, it's a me thing) here's my mix that I stole and modified 2 1/2 TBS Paprika 2 TBS Salt 2 TBS garlic Powder 1 TBS Black Pepper 1 TBS Onion powder 1 TBS Cayenne Pepper 1 TBS dried Oregano 1TBS dried Thyme I buy my spices and herbs in bulk (most stores have a bulk section). Imix up all sorts of rubs for jerk chicken, rib marinates and steak seasonings For me the above blacken recipie is strong and roboust, for the wife overpowering and unpalatable, so I took to doubling the Paprika, it tones it down to a level that she likes. My pleas for her to man up..... fell on deaf ears, well maybe they weren't so deaf but i ended up tuning her out after a minute 10 seconds of telling me something that I already forgot.... try the rub, kick up with more cayene if you like but this level of heat is modereate to tolerable for most,
  2. I'm sure it’s been asked a million times, but… Downrigger releases I went to a soft set i.e. 10 inches of wire connected directly off the ball with a snap on the loose end then a # 16 rubber band triple hitched to the fishing line and closed into the snap. This has worked for 2 colors of lead core behind the ball. It’s cheap and I like it. I like that I can see shakers or even a strike and miss. (FISH ON…wait…it didn’t trip... was that bottom? Did we pick up some junk? Put the boat in neutral…FISH ON!!) My question- what do you use for a downrigger release and why? Convenience? Price? Hook set?
  3. I'm jealous!! Dang dab it!!! Congrats, I can only imagine the delight you’re going through….really… I can only imagine… imagining... It’s only a matter of time and I’ll be trading up, but till then I’ll keep imagining
  4. Sweet!! took me a while to figure out what you meant by reeds, i was looking by the shore. That's really unique (at least i thought so, the wife was more upset that I called her over from her lounger and made her get up... "hey honey, comwe here, you got to see this!" "what?" she screams back "Come here " a little more pleading on my behave " you gotta check this out, it's way cool" annoyed she hollers back "Why?" "cause it's cool" she shuffffle sher way over to peer over my shoulder "well what is it?" she hunches over getting closer to the computer screen "is that what you got me up for? a picture?" "yeah dear... but it's the same one" "I can see that " a little more annoyed "No you don't understand, it's flip over upside down, see the reeds here" i point them out with the pointer on the screen. she shuffles back to the living room mumbling "that nice dear" I guess she didn't think it was cool as i did, or maybe it was something else
  5. anyone else run a section of mono between you lead core and super line? I ran a 40' mono leader, 8-10 colors, then super line on Off Shores. I switched the front release to a barrel type and a snap off the rear. I wrap the line around the front release twice then around through the release and close it in the snap free style. I also attach a stop bead on the leader just in case i wrap the release the wrong way and the board slides down when a fish hits (done it a couple times without the stop and got lucky). the mono section in between might solve the slippery super line issue and the need for wrapping around the release. hmmm.. something to consider I musta toyed around with all my sets a dozen couple times, I figure next year i'll only hafta change things a couple few more times
  6. actually my beam is 78"...I only run two downriggers off the side with 2 1/2' foot arms so i guess i'm running about 12' apart....what the heck you only live once...i'm doing it!!
  7. I hate people running directly behind me, there is a reason i run long lines, GET tHE !@#$ out of my clean water....... So did the red fleg thing ever catch for running lead? I ain't ever seen a red flag, just a bunch of idiots running over my clean water quit following me.....i ain't that good a fisherman....and i have a temper...that's what the red flag should read....
  8. storm heading at us...all i can say is wat to !@#$ing cool when it hit...wind fronyt then rain: then totally awesome sunset!!!!
  9. I've been gleaming as of late here....ummm soooo yeah I'm catching fish on a two color (27#) SWR 20' off the bottom on a 72" transom....I'm frightened to run another SWR on such a narrrow beam ?? do you think a 1 color SWR 10' off the bottom will tanglle with the SWR 20' off the bottom. I really don't want to mess with a lead core tangle, I've been mostly...... tangle free this year.... so far 3 color SWR?? am i crazy talkin here? still learning, but catching fish, even takin strangers off the internet so i can run six lines....
  10. i finally named her....J-D Eyes i finally rigged her, she's small but sea worthy, took on 2-4 footers this morning, so far walleye, soon summer salmon! I'm so addicted to this big water trolling!!
  11. same way for the most part, but two differences, I don't cut all the way down the tail, after all the meat is seperated from the spine, i leave a tiny bit of skin attached to the tail so i have a good anchor for skinning, also I don't take out the pin bones. This works really great on crappies, similar for walleyes, but after i cut down towards the tail i cut bck up the spine torwards the ribs, stopping at the ribs the cut around them like the gills, walleyes are a longer fish and i miss some of the meat otherwise great vid!!
  12. According to the pro from dover, a.k.a. fish biologist, there is no physical feature to distiguish male from female. He did say .."typically the females will be larger than males, depending on the lake you are fishing anything over 20 inches is probably a female." ummmmm i don't think the great lakes qualifies for this generalization.
  13. I'll ask our local fish biologist, but i don't really think there is fool proof way other than cuting open a fish and seeing the reproductive organs. unless there obvious milt or spawn as in the spring and late winter. In the middle of the summer it can be tough. I've caught and submitted walleye heads that i kept for an aging study which was using the jaw bone of the fish. I had a tough time telling if the fish was male or female in june and july, but it got easier later in the season.
  14. nice fish!! been a long time since i did the spring river thing, memories are flooding me!! thanx
  15. did a google search, found some other sites, this and that later, found GLF linked in the other sites, lurked in these strings, then signed up.
  16. Really, you mean a knee jerk reaction?? We have CWD and VHS, we're doomed!!
  17. these are from a few years back....2000?? My cousin with a brute of a laker clickable It was a heck of a day, couldn't keep all the lines in the water. seemed like something was always popping. lost more than we care to admit, but it was a blast, even though mud puppies
  18. While we're at it, how about a memory?? I have issues with 'membering what i did just a few moments ago, I can see myself now, just had a trip, nice fish, pull lines to fight, get fish in, go to reset, ummmmmm..... where were these set at??
  19. put the logos with the .com on your trailer, more people see your trailer up close than the boat...ummm unless you have a slip that is...then that changes everything.
  20. Glad that wasn't my truck!!
