Zig Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Been fishing the pond since 1970. Went out of Holland Friday. 2 salmon in 6 hours. WHAT'S GONE WRONG?
jdh Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Nothing. Just tough conditions with the flip. Bait is on the beach or out past 200, maybe 300 feet of water. 1
FBD Posted August 24 Posted August 24 I’ve been out there since 1979. I’ve had summers where we caught less than ten kings. Not too many seasons back it was so bad we didn’t bother to go out until 8 as those bonus fish before dark were non existent and even at dark 1-2 hits was a blessing.
Mega Byte Posted August 24 Posted August 24 August have been amazing to us numbers-wise, but the sizes are much smaller. Most of our kings are 12 - 14 pounds. Coho are running around 6 pounds. I've only caught one king over 20 pounds this summer and that was in May. We got a 3-man limit on Friday in Pentwater. 50 - 75 FOW, top 30 feet early and then later in the morning, top 50. 4
FBD Posted August 25 Posted August 25 I stopped fishing tournaments about five years ago as the key to winning seemed to be who set up on the hot school. You could be 200 yards from the winning boat and not get a hit. This year it’s been way more consistent: you can go out to x feet of water and expect to catch as many fish as anyone else also setting up in x feet of water. 2
Dennis hageman Posted August 25 Posted August 25 I think the bulk of the fish stayed on the mid to south end of the lake until the lake flip at end of July. As the water settled they moved north. The last flip really moved them up to and past the point. They have been wacking them for the last couple weeks whitehall to Frankfort. It is funny how every year the fishing sets up. I thought the fishing last year was better especially for size but I'm not complaining. The spring coho fishing was more consistent this year for me and we also were catching kings along with coho. Seems like we get way more east and north winds during the summer than I remembered when I was younger. To me the most consistent fishing South Haven to Grand Haven is th month of July.
