  1. i am in the same boat-pun intended:no: i think i am going to have to use the kicker only in case of main failure. i have an older (heavy) 9.9 merc and a spring loaded adjustable bracket. i cant afford one of the speed control things or an autopilot right now. my plan is to have the kicker on the bracket, all tuned up and with its own fuel source. i may not get the ezsteer right away. i would start the kicker before each trip and hope i dont need it. worse case if i had to drive it from back there to get in. just getting a couple days that may be nice enough to start work on the boat so i will see how it all plays out, but for now i have the same concerns so will post if i can offer any advice.
  2. yes you can do it but safety has to be top priority and maybe 2 footers would be to much. you will have to find out what the boat handles and what you can handle. then i would only go out in less allowing for conditions getting worse, pull lines and go in when the weather starts to take the slightest turn. find a couple ports you like and always try to have a couple spots north and south so you can run back with the waves.
  3. at least you had a great catch for the midday and fighting the weather, awesome!
  4. I think they were fishing a tourny where apparently lakers did not count, not sure on this though.
  5. captjansen-dont take my answer as any disrespect to you maybe i did not make my point well enough-but for sure no need to be sorry. again to the original poster its a great thread and i like hearing everyones ideas.
  6. been wondering the same thing thought i read somewhere that side image was usefull for locating bait. will be awaiting replys with you.
  7. captjansen-we know that salmon and baitfish swim in all directions. i think the poster was looking for overall advice and i will stick with troll into a current.
  8. mostly agree with rascal i know a guy who spends lots of time looking at his rigger wires and cannonballs just as rascal describes and does great but never turns back when he goes through fish just keeps on his S.A.D.=speed, angle, direction. if you look at the smallest perch or stream trout in a creek they will be facing into the current. now where i mostly fish this sometimes does not matter as every one is dictated to run in a circle by fall. would like to try this more in the big lake. lastly yes salmon move all over and often and a romp across the lake is nothing. that said they wont die if they quit swimming some of the time they are suspended ,moveing little if at all. maybe this would apply more to those fish and not be an issue during the prime active bite ? great thread as the nameless above captain is the only one who i have ever bring this up.
  9. i think you will be ok but this maybe a gotta try it to know for sure. you could put them further toward the bow if you think it will be an issue. a few pics may help get better answers.
  10. Great work ! Adult version of the easter bunny if ever such a thing, hope your mate was at least dressed the part. LOL.
  11. good call i think you will be happy and yes the money saved could go to one of the many other things that this sport has a way of telling us we cant live without:no:
  12. big 10-4 lets hope for fish on . all good.
  13. ok yes the site builders put in a spot for when nobody on a fishing website had any fishing related info they could put on whatever they want - i get it but why? want to talk about the lions odds of makeing to the superbowl ? fine but what does it have to do with this site and about fishing? if you have no outlet than to put your car on a fishing website how about focus on takeing a new person fishing-not saying abandond the car, i can have the love for both just thought not here and if i am the only i will respectfully let it go:no:
  14. if your bored with fishing go to a non fishing website simple right ?
  15. hey tim just wonder if you picked any out yet ?
  16. no problem and yes i think the rod would be heavy for the surf also. i am not sure if posting in a different spot would help get more to chime in you could also always buy a lite spinning outfit and go explore the little streams for trout, if i think and or hear of anything else as your time is comeing up i will post it.
  17. joe-reading your post again i wonder what you mean when you say a surf casting rig and then talk about a modified pompano rig. if you are referring to saltwater tackle i dont think you will fare very well and for sure not in the rivers i pointed out. that is more of a stealth game and even when conditions dont call for stealth per say, you still need an outfit with a super smooth drag and a lite rod that cushion these fish on 4-12 ldb line a pool cue style surf casting rig is not gonna do it. i would maybe look around a day see what others are doing then replicate the tackle, spot etc.
  18. not sure about that rock jetty north lake leelanua could still have ice on it the way we are going and shore access is limited anyway so cancell that plan. spawn or casting heavy spoons like cleos or crocs is the way to go. or if you want you could try some stream fishing . the river at leland is not a big steelhead stream and is not very long from the dam to the mouth. i would try the platte river-steelhead same for the betsie river and the frankfort piers could be a mixed bag.
  19. looks maybe worth a try ? i dont know is the price comparable ? i think i would a bit skeptical of the smoother claim-spro seems good and no problems so i dont think i will change.
  20. was looking rough in the harbor too-yuck really nasty day up this way.
