  1. Gimbal mounts are the only way to go. Cleanest look and easiest to remove. I never understood why anyone would put a bunch of plates down the side of their boat. All the big boats Ive been on use the gimbal system. You can still mount tracks to the gimbal plate. Remove everything and have a clean boat in less than 5 minutes.

i have to say the reverse is true for me. i have never saw a big boat with gimbal mounted riggers. i agree with ryan put them on tracks! riggers are way too expensive to take a chance with. what i dont understand is why all the folks that use the boat for fishing and playing need to have no trace of fishing stuff on it when doing the other things.if i take someone out for a cruise and they are turned off by the fishing "stuff" they dont need to come back. i can see if some stuff gets in the way but everything ? as far as the weather if it cant take the weather the company president needs to be beat over the head with it !

  2. just google ludington fishing report you will get freestyle and two other charter reports. freestyle and one of them update often. one changes the date daily but leaves the same report on. sorry i dont remember wich one of the latter two is wich. i hear slow going and ice water at manistee. probably the same for ludington unless we get some south wind, and i have not heard the latest on that. calling for a good chance of boomers around tc tmw.

  3. hey guys i was wondering if this is only michigan law but the handbook i have states the following:

    red and green sidelights

an all-round white light or both a masthead light and sternlight. these lights must be higher than the sidelights.

they then show pics that look like the only way to be legal is you need the white light high enough that it could not be covered by a cooler on the swim platform. Ihad been thinking about this because my boat only has a white light on the stern where it could be covered up by a cooler ( no swim platform) . looks like to be legal i need to add a second white light. what do you guys think ? the most recent book i have is 2011 handbook of boating laws published by mi dnr.

  4. Personally I don't care for the Church boards in that I may be the odd man out. On the other hand My planer board spreads consistently run wider and look better. Second there is not one out of the package board that really works well on a variety of setups. That may change in the future. For many the clip it on and run it simplicity of the Church Walleye board is good enough so you will hear lots of people say they are great. Those same people will drag them around like a flock of ducks behind their boats all day long. To me the purpose of a planer board is to gain width in your spread. So I have spent years doing that and have gotten pretty good at it. What I have found is there is no big gain between the Church Walleye Board and the Off Shore OR12 until you begin making changes to them or go fast. I can't get a Walleye Board to not dive at higher speeds.

You will also have to decide if you want them to trip or not for me most of my setups do not trip this means you have to fight the board and the fish till you get the board in and remove it. Having it not trip allows me to run much more aggressive angles and setups to gain width without false releases.

So what would I recommend my first choice is Off Shore OR12 with some minor mods done to it. 2nd would be the Yellow Birds not as easy to tune but once you learn them they will run better.

i was thinking of grabbing a couple yellow birds for the price saveings alone and just as extras. what do you do to the birds ?

  5. personal preference on if you set the boards to release or not and same for lead vs copper. as said maybe fish with some others and or experiment on your own i like copper. for more than 1 board per side the shallowest running setup-lets say 3 color lead will be furthest from the boat and this rod will be furthest toward the bow, pointed higher up in the air, or both then lets say a 7 color lead or 250 copper would be closest to the boat with that rod tip lower and or closer to the stern. hope this helps, good luck.

  6. Little Guy, everyone starts out with a pretty big learning curve with Lake Michigan and it changes all the time too.

If you want to learn, I'm willing to teach :). Would be willing to go out with you a time or two and show you some techniques. Could go on my boat or yours but learning on your own boat is usually better.

Send me a PM or email and we can talk.

i would put god on hold for this kind of offer, take ryan up on it !!

  7. use what you have and can afford add dipsys and other stuff when you have the downriggers perfected. you can run long leads and or only run 3 if the fish are spooky. you will see days when the other stuff outdoes downriggers but there are still days when the riggers shine. they worked before we had this stuff and still work. IMO dipsys are a pain and not worth the little extra off to the side factor you get. i agree with the other poster if i was going to use any non rigger device it would be copper. i also do not consider a wire diver to be remotely stealth like. thats my 2cents good luck and go every chance you get.

  8. Did not expect to hear that. Sunday off Holland/Saugatuck we had ~68 on the surface with 51* down 20' and gradually got colder from there. Ran the FishHawk X4 down to 165' and got 41*. Thought you would have it even colder.

had lots of south/west wind. air temp may not hit 70 today now guess what way the wind is blowing and what it will do to water temp.

  9. Contrary to the above agreements, the numbers mentioned are the "minutes" of the lat/log location. Your example indicates the "seconds" portion of the number. So using your example, the number represents 41° 49' 00" through 41° 54' 59". Actually, after looking at a chart, The 41° numbers will represent north latitude and the west longitude will be in the 86° range. From the chart, it looks like New Buffalo pier is about N41° 48' 00" and W086° 45' 00".

yes i only knew it refered to the lat and long. i knew someone would give a more detailed answer thanks playdough-find any trolls under the bridge yet ?

  10. thanks rascal yes i have been watching the charts glad you dont have the fleas maybe the ones we have now are worse then the others sounds like they tolerate colder water. bloodrun i have no doubt you make a great product it would be even better in only my opinion if not for the drawbacks mentionend

  11. I haven't seen any in Ludington so far, and that's because winds have switched around quite a bit. The SW wind now should bring icy temps to the surface real soon, if not already. Absolutely, Flea Flickr was/is the premiere line for this, or it was. Is there a new name for these pesky new type fleas & where do they originate at/color of them too?

how does a sw wind bring icy cold water to ludington ? wouldnt it blow the warmer water from the sw corner of the lake to the western shore of mi ?

  12. sharp hooks and singles vs. trebles but what i am surprised is nobody asked you why you thought all the fish you lost were foul hooked? as stated coho are known for roliing and getting off etc. if the fish was foul hooked in some spots i think you would be less likely to lose it , but yes other spots it was foul hooked maybe more likely. i would bet they were not all foul hooked. good luck you will have better, worse and days just like that- thats fishing!
