  1. It's a bunch of "horse-pucky" to think that 72,000 jobs would disappear. I don't really care if 72 K jobs in other countires disapear. The Great lakes need to be protected. With current technology, there's no reason these foreign owned ships can't be bulk transfer loaded somewhere way up the St Lawrence onto ships that have never seen the salt. Now that would create some jobs.
  2. NY Power Authority decides not to go forward with windmill project on Lake Ontario & Lake Erie. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20110927/NEWS01/110927019/Power-Authority-decides-against-off-shore-wind-turbines-?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Home :thumb::thumb:
  3. When spooling it on, pinch it between you thumb & 1st finger. If you get a "white" powder off it, toss it.
  4. This yea,r it was a decent fish that had just eaten a little fish that had just eaten a "littler" fish. (I pulled the "littler" one out with pliers then decided to photo.)
  5. I just wish someone would tell the tackle shops when the Fishing season STARTs!. The typical "expecting a shipment end of April" doesn't cut it in my book. IMO, shops should be stocked & sites should be on-line with the new designs & lake stuff no later than the first week of March. Seriously, Mid/end of Feb & we're getting our gear in shape & many guys want to hit the water right after ice-out.
  6. NYS anglers are now permitted to use 3 lines per angler in freshwater until Dec 2013. Governor signed bil s-2462 on 17 Aug 2011.
  7. It's very easy to replace the clutch. It's just a "fibre" washer on the left hand side of the shaft. Check your spring under the handle and the bearing & washer over the bearing. Always loosen the handle when you're not using them. My unitrolls are not touchy at all.
  8. I run a moor sub-T on my 18 ft'r & haven't had any problems. (knock on wood) but am hearing a lot of good things about the new fishhawk.
  9. Net them all, grind them up & use them as fertilizer. Isn't that what our ancestoral native Americans did with some fish?
  10. I had to say goodbye to an old friend of about 17 years this week. We chalked up a lot of miles together. He wasn’t my 1st mate, but just like a fishing buddy, he helped me launch the boat every time. He wasn’t into fishing like me and he actually preferred to stay at the launch/park area, watching others trying to launch, while I went out on the lake for a couple hours. I imagine he saw a lot of antics over the years. He was well respected as nobody ever bothered him. He always kept his cool and never became overheated as a lot of others did, even on those hot summer days. That’s not to say we didn’t have issues over the years, but I was always able to mend them. Guess it was a few years back when his problems became noticeable. At first he developed a little wobble after hitting a pothole on life’s bumpy road, but I managed to straighten him out before it became too serious. Then he was plagued with joint problems which were really bad when they acted up. Last year his body started showing some serious signs of deteriation and he eventually just didn’t have the stamina nor zip of his youth anymore and really began slowing down. Last month I got him some new wheels just so he could get around better. Saturday, the writing was on the wall. He had developed a major case of flatulence & I don’t know the medical terms but guess he just blew some internal gaskets. So I took that hunk of scrap to the dealer and bought a new truck! Tom B. (LongLine) p.s. ’94 Ranger – 246.5K miles, 20.2 mpg for the last 5,000 miles.
  11. Dag gone gummy bears are ridiculous now days!... At least you won't have to re-buy a lot of the stuff. Don't forget the line (to tie it all together). Buy bulk to save some bucks.
  12. For a 1st timer, definitely go to the west end. Unless you're going in the fall, then hit the east end.
  13. Congratulations. "Here Dad, you land this one....it's a little one."
  14. PMan - suggest you go with a co-poly line such as P-Line rather than a straight mono. Costs a little more but will hold up much better.
  15. They are absolutely no good...send all you have to me DWSS Top tray in my tackle box.
  16. Thinking about going over a bunch of reels this winter so I've been looking around the net for info to see what I'm in for. Here's a guy I found. He's done an amazing job on tutorials. Just had to share: http://www.alantani.com/
  17. I run an 18ft Bluefin. beam about 94", something like that. 1 rigger straight off the back, 2nd at 45 deg. both booms only extended 30". I run a 10 Lb fish on one side, probe & homemade 14 Lb torpedo off the other. I never troll in a straight line & have never had a tangle. (knock on wood) Ran them last weekend at 125 & 105 ft of cable out.
  18. Salmon hit the preyfish tail first to cripple it. They may instantly whip their heads around so as to flip it & swallow it headfirst or they may come back around and grab it head first.
  19. Heavy spoons like NK28's, I use a 3/0 siwash Gammy. Weight is just a hair under the stock treble.
  20. As said, I don't know much about herring, however in Great lakes, adult skipjack is typically 11-16" & per WISC seagrant site and the world record is 3Lb12oz per IFG. If I were you, I verify ID on Wisc ID site then have the biggest one entered. You may have something there.
  21. Don't know about herring...that's a big herring! But over my fishing career, I've caught garbage bags, a fishing rod, a christmas tree, a wallet and snagged a couple carp all with silver bullets. Had a two banger once - 20 Lb salmon on cheeter and a 4 Lb smallmouth on the main line deep in 120 FOW.
  22. MUP = Magnum up - Mag size spoon run above reg size spoon. DWSS = Dreamwaever Super Slim T.G.I.F. = "Thank God I Fish" or for non-fishermen: "Toes Go In First"
  23. I have two old style aluminum and 3 PVC/Aluminum that I made myself. Each rigg'r has a plastic one on it but they're just for decoration. Have never lost a rod. I caught a rod once, so someone lost theirs.
  24. I'd suggest you go to the NOAA chart site, blow up the area your looking for then print it and take it to Staples & get it laminated.
