  1. p.s. leave the rings on. In fact if it doesn't have a ring, put a good one on it
  2. I like the Maxima too. (green) Just took the 10 Lb off & respooled with 20. Gander's not carrying the bulk Max anymore Fleas are starting to show up off Rochester so it's time to go back to heavier stuff.
  3. Wolfe - Lot of strange currents between Sandy & the Genny right now. Also I-Bay & East are much warmer than W of the Genny right now. I'd suggest 2.5 down speed on a N-S heading.
  4. You were definitely lucky. So was that toddler in her back seat. With my 4 "kids", their 1st driving lesson was always - "DON'T trust the other car."
  5. Very clever application. (no pun intended) Anyone interested in setting one up just look under "used restaurant equipment". (or commercial kitchens) Or keep your eyes open for any reataurant that is going out of business and auctioning off stuff. (I used to work for a company that made those kinds of tables many years ago.)
  6. Billy - You definitely have the knack for the BTs. Nice looking fish. It may be the "same old story", but it's getting to be a classic. Glad to hear none of them scared. Hopefully I'll get out this weekend. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. Some good tips there. Definitely teach someone else how to operate the boat. Two things I’ve learned from solo fishing with an “auto-bungeeâ€: 1. Set-up well away from other boats. 2. Set up with the wind pushing your stern. You can supervise/train adjusting speed & direction when the lines are out.
  8. Congrats to Yankee Troller for winning the 2007 Orleans Cnty Pro-Am, Pro Division.
  9. Only made it out for a couple hours this morning. 2 Cohos & a Bow. Bigger Coho 27 inches. All 35 down over 130FOW. Interesting temps 120 to 150 FOW. 150 FOW - 42F surf, 39.5F down 20. 2 minor scum lines & 2 sharp temp breaks in the area. All on Bloody Silv/Blk R&R. 2.0 down-speed, “zigging & a zagging†but mostly N-S troll. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Knots weaken the line simply because when they are tightened the line distorts and the wraps actually cut into themselves. With mono it’s interesting that the smaller the hook eye, the greater damage is done to the line. Sunlight greatly deterioates mono as well as does damage to the braids. It won't hurt the metal (lead, copper or stainless). Long periods of use with copper & stainless will harden them & they will eventually go brittle and easy to break if bent sharply. Lead won't go brittle but will thin out. When any line breaks before the knot breaks, it’s because the line has either become stretched thinner, kinked or has become nicked.
  11. Launched at the river at 5:30. Cool with N’ly wind, maybe 2 footers coming straight up the river. Decided to try the east side this time. Stayed 60-90 FOW. 52F surf, rapid temp change down 24 (47F) to 32 (40F). Anyways, here’s my youngest with a couple he got on a 28 seedless melon, both down 31: (Stlhd, 28â€) (King, 24â€) Luck to all
  12. WTG Rich. He'll remember that for a long time. Nothing like making a kid smile on a calm day with a bunch of fish. A day I remember with my son - that day he beat me to the rod, set the hook & said "here Dad, you take it, it's a little one" - Bless his little soul.
  13. Thanx guys. It's always a challange to bring them in like this solo with 2 riggers & flotsam all around.
  14. 4/21 & boy did it feel good to finally get out there and see this: Launched at the Genny around 6:00. Blew a little smoke firing her up but everything checked out fine. Putted around a little then put them out on the west side & headed towards Russell. River temp 46F, out front 44F, west in 15Ft – 42 F (surface). Blue surface water at 35Ft was 39.5F. Did the North-South thing in front of Russell out to 40 FOW, till I spotted this “hull busting beastâ€: (over 20 ft long) Then decided to work over the 18-22 range, as there was a lot of screen activity there. Glad I did cuz that’s where I got this big shouldered brute: 30†& 14 Lbs of Brown - 14 down over 20FOW, NK melon, and 2.1 mpg down & headed North. Couldn’t have asked for a better shakedown cruise. 1st sun/wind burn of the year feels ggggooooooodddd. Pulled everything in at noon. Luck to all,
  15. Favorites on Lake Ontario (only lake I fish) are Howies & A-TOM-ICs however I don't fish Lake Erie so I guess I can't vote. ...I know what you mean...we all have those days...
  16. R&R's moved up 3 rows in my tackle box last year but still have a row to go to top my NKs.
  17. Why not suggest the fish get a passport? That'd slow the progression down by about 6-7 months.
  18. Ken - I only run Black’s releases. Never had a problem with them. I run the cable through them with an oversized crimp between the legs to hold them in place. Roughly an inch above the cannonball hardware. I don’t like extra or multiple snaps/swivels/hardware that can fail, come unclipped or get fouled with weeds/fleas. Don’t use them on a coated cable unless you check out thread “Black’s on a Sub-Tâ€, because they’ll wear through the coating pretty fast. (Thread's back there someplace) I also use them as a stacker on uncoated cable. Just remember with all plastic releases, don’t store them in direct sunlight or in high temperature areas for extended periods of time as all plastics will deteriorate.
  19. I used to run through over 2 bulk spools of 8 Lb a season w/ clean spoons & plugs. 2 yrs ago I stepped up to 15 (spring & summer) & ended the yr with 20Lb (ran more flashers, also fluro's). Read Dan Keatings book & splurged on some bulk 10Lb & am going to see how long it lasts me this year. (vacations & weekend warrior)
  20. Hey Billy - How about combining your favorite past-times. Something like "The Downhill Angler" “Salmon Angulation†(I like this one) “Salmon Schusser†“Tucking Trout†or “Tuck-N-Trout†“The Freestyle Fisherman†“Slalom Salmon" “Chatter Charters†IRISH56 - Be gratefull you haven't run into "O'toole's Corrollary". O'toole was the guy that said Murphy was a freek'n optimist.
  21. The subject of Red underwater is very interesting. Humans can only see the “visible†spectrum with the 3 rod/cone groupings they have in their eyes. (hence humans call it the visible spectrum) Fish can see more of the light spectrum than we can see. Fish have at least 5 known rod/cone groupings. 3 have been determined for the same colors we see. The 4th has been established as sensitive to UV, which we can’t see. Scientists aren’t sure of the sensitivity of that 5th grouping yet, however some suspect it goes into the infrared range. If this is the case, fish can see shades of red much deeper that we give them credit for. (On a similar note - Anybody have one of those “blacklight paintings? Colors are quite pronounced to us when the light is on.) 2nd point is the fish’s eye. How it works. They move the cones/rods towards their spherical lens that gives them the ability to focus on near objects plus a binocular type effect where they can focus on distant objects at the same time. This coupled with the 5 rod/cone grouping indicates a very special type of vision. Another point to ponder is whether the “red object†the fish is viewing is translucent, opaque or simply a reddish tinge such as a thin red paint job over a silver spoon. If translucent he probably won't see it. If solid, he'll probably see shades of gray. If the latter, then the fish might be seeing a reddish flash of some kind (like a red flashlight) on my killer spoons.
  22. Bright Day – Dark Day Results: 1. Either 37.5%; Bright 25%; Dark 37.5% 2. Either 25%; Bright 75% 3. Bright 100% 4. Either 75%; Dark 25% 5. Either 85.7%; Bright 14.3% 6. Either 14.3%; Bright 42.9%; Dark 42.9% 7. Either 16.7%; Dark 83.3% Thanx to everyone who posted or sent me e-mail: (note: this is not an endorsement of anyone’s product. Merely an attempt to clarify the old adage: “Bright Day Bright lure – Dark day Dark lureâ€)
  23. Caz I've heard of some guys trying that but I didn't hear anyone telling about catching anything.
  24. Hey guys, lots of hits - only a few opinions. I know my photographic skills aren’t very good so here’s a basic description: (the “aka†is what that particular lure is in case my photos or descriptions aren’t very good however mfg not as important as color combo) 1. Black & Silver aka NK Mullato 2. Red-Silver-Green aka NK Watermellon 3. Bronze-Red-Chartreuse aka FishLander Sledge Hammer 4. Black-Green-White aka NK Diehard 5. Dk Green-Gold aka NK Kermit 6. Black-White-Red aka Stinger Grim Reaper 7. White (glo) with colored dots aka NK Wonderbread Dark - Heavy cloud cover, dark water or deep in water column Bright –A day you wish you hadn’t left your sunglasses home, clear water, or shallow in the water column. Either - Both There is no right or wrong answer. I’ve sent the question to 3 boards and will compile & post the results on all 3. Thanx, Tom B. (LongLine)
  25. I just put this up on a Big-O board and am curious how it'd be answered "out west." We all know the old adage: “Bright day – Bright lures; dark day – dark lures†but for the sake of discussion & curiosity how would you classify the following lures – Dark Day or Bright Day? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
