  1. I just glad it won't be my Packers that receive the whomping the Giants are going to get. (...& I live in western NY) The real question is going to be "who has the best 3 million (?) dollar 30 second commercial?"
  2. Something to do while you're waiting for Santa. Merry Christmas to all.
  3. Nailer - Did you check the radio/transmitter for impedence? They have to match or you won't get much. The transmitter literature should say what spec is required. (Also make sure that cable is all the way up inside the antenna.)
  4. That was a very thoughtful thing for your wife & you to do. I'm sure the people really appreciated it.
  5. Genesee River Rochester NY, 4-21-07 From last year - Had to be nutzoid to out with the antenna up. (no photoshop touch up)
  6. S'Q' - We all feel your pain. The only thing worse is seeing a cash winning behemoth about a foot away from your net, after a 20 minute battle, and then having the rig let go. At least having him on let you know you were where the fish were.
  7. Thanx Frank, Thanx Skein'r - not as creative as your designs, but I'm very happy to have made one that finally worked. (I must have trash-canned a couple dozen of them in the last few years)
  8. Looked like something on fire off to the east. But it had a silver lining at sunup. King, 27 & change. 9:00 AM, Off Russell. 75 over137 FOW. Blk/slvr Howie behind a Blk/Slvr/red Glo dodger. (Love it when they hit a homemade paint job.) 2 ¼ down speed, headed N. Best I’ve done this year. (Lousy photo, knees were shaking too much.) Had another on but am happy with this one. Luck to all,
  9. 28 one way & get there by 6:00AM. (no wonder I can launch early...can't night fish tho...)
  10. Leverage is an interesting theory. I’m holding a spoon between the pointing & 2nd fingers of my right hand and picturing a fish that is hooked on a spoon in the right side of his mouth (my second finger) such that the line is off to his right and then he reverses direction such that the line and lure are now on his left. The spoon hits his left jaw, (my pointing finger) thus his left jaw becomes a fulcrum. The hook is attached to the spoon with a ring. I just can’t see how this lever action could possibly loosen the hook. It’d drive that hook in deeper. I’m now thinking that the fish grabbed the spoon, immediately got hooked in his left jaw (my pointing finger) with the lure draped across his mouth to the right (my second finger). Oops, on further thought that’s impossible because the hook point is facing his right jaw. The only way for any hook to become unhooked is to release the pressure on the hook. Actually, exert pressure or let it free fall opposite to the direction in which it became imbedded. Unless you rip it right through his jaw. (Think about getting a hook out of your finger. No matter which way you pull or twist the spoon body, it’ll make a bloody mess, but it won’t come out) Another thought - As you’re trolling, the chain formed by the spoon body, ring & hook are taught. If the fish hit the lure directly from the rear, felt the hook in his mouth then moved directly up on the spoon body and clamped down on the spoon body, then there could be some “slack†in the body-ring-hook chain. It would be feasible then that water pressure, from the fish swimming forward or head shaking, against the hook could cause it to loosen regardless of how much drag you have on the line. Carrying that forward if the action was to repeat i.e. left/clamp, right/clamp, left/clamp, the chain could go slack then tight then slack, hence cause pressure changes against the hook and possible enlarge the hole in the fishes jaw… Okay, you have now officially driven me crazy with this topic so rather than staying up all night thinking about it, I'll stand by my original reply and say just keep your rod bent a goodly amount and the same amount, all the time you have the fish on. (and use a single hook)
  11. The hole can only be caused by movement of the hook in the fish's jaw...right? This would mean a changing amount of pressure on the hook...right? If you're reel has a set drag then the only source of this changing pressure is your rod. (or else the fish is sitting there shaking his head (like a dog with a stuffed animal) I'd watch the rod tip & keep the same amount of bend in it regardless of the drag setting. If you pump, then reel faster on the downward motion to maintain the same bend or lower your rod slower.
  12. quote: For one thing, the Center of Gravity of a single 3/0 or 4/0 hook is further back from the spoon than a 1/0 treble, True - however the hook is pulled parrallel to the shank, as it's attached with a ring, until the spoon flips and changes direction. It then "whips" around to follow the spoon. What's more important than CofG is that the effective surface area of a treble is more than 2 times that of a single, hence it will definitely be more resistant to hydrodynamic motion ("swinging" through the water) and will have more drag through the water during the "flip", hence dampening the spoon's wobble. (now there's some scientific terminology - flip & wobble) Effective surface area being the curved part between the shank and the point(s). As Sea-Mac pointed out "a single hook goes through easier." quote: Sorry, my engineering degree just leaked out. mine too Another benefit of singles is storage in a tackle box. Dumping a box full of single hook spoons is a lot easier to pick up than a box full of trebles.
  13. Data was interesting. Did some searching. In NYS, all hooks on lures must be free swinging and have no additional weight on the hook - Special Gr Lk regs 1 Sept - Mar. Probably has to do with once popular but now illegal practice of snagging. Regs don't say anything about jigs by themselves, but I imagine that if you got caught with a jig ringed to a spoon especially in this time period, you'd be looking at a court date. A little off topic but I find it kind of interesting that NY has regs based upon "points" on lines, whereas MI apppears to have regs based upon "hooks".
  14. Frank, A while back I weighed some hooks to see if there really was any difference and there is. (in grams) NK Mag Trebles: 2.6, 2.4, 2.6, 2.4, 2.3, 2.6, 2.5 NK 28 Trebles: 1.4, 1.4, 1.4, 1.5, 1.2, 1.4, 1.3 Gama 2/0 singles: 0.9, 0.9, 0.9, 0.9, 0.9, 0.8 Gama 3/0 singles: 1.1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.1, 1.1, 1.1 The average 28 weighs 14 grams. (Hook appears to be 10% of spoon weight, ignoring water resistance) In order to take some of the wobble out of a spoon simply flatten it a little. Generally the front is easier to flatten than the cup with such a heavy spoon as the NK. Flattening the front or bending it ever so slightly opposite to the cup generally gives the spoon a greater “swath†through the water. You have to have pretty strong thumbs and with any spoon you have to be careful of not cracking the paint job. Sore thumbs have led me to replace the trebles on my 28’s with Gama’ 4/0s. As to weighted hooks, check the reg’s. I think it’s illegal in NY. As to J-plugs, set the trailing single hook back a little farther than how the trebles came in the package. I.e. set the trailer back another ½ to ¾â€. (really helps on short strikes) H.I.H.
  15. I always change spoon trebles to singles. You will brain-hook shakers occassionally, but you'll get more solid hook-ups on the bigger guys. You have to watch the weight change though. Generally less hook weight means more wobble at slow speeds. It also means that without bending the spoon a little, you'll spin out at the recomended trolling speeds. Some guys I know replace the trailing hook on J-plugs with singles and are very successful.
  16. I believe weight of line & length of lead have something to do with it. I find 2.5 - 3.0 down speed on 15 Lb, approx 75ft back usually works for me.
  17. Gives new meaning tothe phase "went fishing & caught a whale..."
  18. That's disgusting. They should be taken out & flogged. :angry2:
  19. WTG Guess when he gets his first boat, he'll have to name it the "Salmon Smootcher".
  20. An email I just submitted to Firestone: :angry2:

Thought about renaming your ride the "1 Ringy Dinghy" ???
  22. I have nothing against the derbies. I think the organizers put a lot of hard work & their best judgement into them. (LOC, Pro Ams, Scotty, etc) I don't really like the rules that you can't fly solo but understand that they are because of fear some soloists don't have a clue. However I've seen party boats that don't have a clue either. In bad weather, they shouldn't say "fish at your own risk" but rather "no fishing today." (Don't know how they'd get the word around though) I do have a problem with the few bad apples that all fishing derbies & tournaments have though, and that's the guys that try to find a way around the rules. I think they should be prosecuted by the law for fraud not just banned from future derbies.
  23. Caz - I also use what you call sharks. We call them "fish-shaped" or "herbies". Down south they call them "mulets". I run 10 lb'rs but have them painted silver. I wish they'd come out with a 12 Lb mold for that shape. I think there's a very expensive plated weight called a "shark" that looks like a ball that's been squished, hammered and elongated, with a sheet metal tail. Mulets do sway a little, but I like that. I prefer the fish-shaped over the ball simply because there's less frontal resistance against the water and the short tails on the balls are worthless. I run one on my probe and have no blowback problems till I go deeper than 90 ft &/or into the current &/or run at 3 mph or more.
  24. Bought a couple of Penns back in my college days (back in the 70's) because I liked the maroon color and they matched the eyelet thread on my black graphite rods. Bought a few more through the 80's because the 1st ones held up very well. Then went to the bigger black Penns that held more and heavier line. About 4 years ago began running Penn 320 GTs with a 4.3:1 ratio, hold even more line and have a very smooth drag. Actually I like Penn's because Pennsylvannia keeps NYS from sliding down to Virginia.
