Tomorrow we are heading to Monroe. Boat going in Saturday and fishing begins. Going to be at brest bay marina again this year for may june and part of july. Any one fishing down there give me a holler on the radio.

To the second part of your i got one a few years ago it does make a difference when you change directions with the currecnt you can adjust your down speed to keep your lures working.

All the great lakes have currents. This site give a good look at currents at the surface and at depth. http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/currents/ it works best in google chrome.

Let me know when you are going to install it i am in Jenison and can come over and maybe help you out. I made a lot of phone calls to ray marine before installing mine. Is yours last years model with the flux gate compass.

It used to be mandatory on hydraulic steering with the SportPilot and significantly improved the unit on mechanical steering. Basically with hydraulic steering there was no way for the AP to know how far the boat steering had been turned and the pump would continue to run even though the rudder was full over. On mechanical the RR made the steering more efficient.

As I understand it the newer Raymarine units rely on much better gyro and GPS information and consequently don't need the RR. I think I would give it a try without it and add it if you need it. It isn't hard to add later -- mount the RR sensor and run the cable to the control head.

The new EV sport pilots come with it and they recommend using it. I talked to raymarine about it and they said you can set the angel and hard over time but it is still no where near as accurate as having the rudder reference. It is also protection from stripping the gears in the motor as it will never hit the stops if it is installed and working properly. I had done like they said i would have had problems as it is set at 30 degrees port and starboard. You also need to set the hard over time which is a calculation that you have to make after timing the device steer from hard port to hard starboard and then enter that into the unit and that is what tells the computer where your center rudder is. Again he said your unit will search for that point and work a lot more. Mine when the rudder reference calibrated showed me 27 degrees port and 28 degree starboard.

The gyro replaces the fluxgate compass and makes keeping a heading easier.

any suggestions to someone about to put in the same auto pilot? I haven't bought the rudder reference yet, and was somewhat planning on trying without it for a year. what made you decide to buy it?

Mine came with it. Get it if you can it may be a pain to install it but it made configuring it so easy and you dont have to worry about the steering box oversteering into your stops and stripping the gears in the motor. Take your time and read the instructions a couple times. Dont rush i took a whole weekend to get mine done.

I wish this had been an April Fools Day post. At least it was in the upper 50s yesterday and is to be above 45 for the rest of the week. Maybe we are over the hump and we are done with freezing daytime temps until next December.

I really hope so i am so over this winter.

I use the walker terminator/release the way ryan shows it. it was a pain to get it set but once set it works great

well enough snow finally melted by this afternoon making it possible to drag the boat out of storage:D. Opened it up this afternoon and took a look at what was needed to install the auto pilot. after a trip to the hardware store I have what I need to get the job done. Biggest thing was trying to figure out how to connect the rudder reference transducer. So I got to work and got the ball mounted to the steering arm that was fun to drill trough. After it got dark I spent some time fabing a spacer to get the rudder reference transducer in line with the steering arm. That is tomorrows project then to installing the rest of it which shouldn't be to bad to do,

the problem stuff came on a spool about three inches high and 2 inch diameter. the new stuff comes on a standard size spool like 330 yds of Berkley trilene xl or xt

I 've been using the 19 strand an love it except for the price. I got some of the first run and had issues but they replaced it with the new line and haven't had an issue since. It is way easier to deal with and if you do get a kink you don't loose you gear.

Well After soon time thinking and planning I came up with an idea for my mast system. This is what I built. Made of all stainless steel. Have not got them wired yet, will post more pics when I'm done. Thanks for the ideas!!

Since the day this started I felt that they should have to fish/hunt/etc. using the same methods and equipment they were using at the time of the treaty. But this is just one more form of welfare that the common person has to fund and live with.

Depends on when it is, Planning to be on erie for at least may and june. But I would donate to a cause trying to limit the netters if I wasn't able to fish the tourney. Fishing in Ludington is a PITA because of the nets and the Indians not marking them or moving them and not updating the numbers on them.

Auto pilot has arrived now to read all the info that came with it and figure out the seatalk stuff. John as soon as it gets warm enough out I am going to get the boat here to install it. Jim I'll let you know when we are going to do it if you want to stop over.
