Welcome aboard

Hey Jon nice meeting you on Jon M's boat sunday. Welcome aboard this is a great place to pick up information.
-
After fishing Sunday with Jon. My Wife and I were going to try and take Evan to the beach to no avail. we came back to the Holland launch as Evan wanted to watch the boats come out of the water. While there a county sheriff pulled in and walked up under the shade of the trees and sat down. We started talking and I guess last weekend in the evening they had a pretty good fight over pulling and launching and the sheriff now is going to be at the ramp after 3 pm. It was a zoo to say the least. one guy tied up a jet ski to the dock and vanished for the half hour we were there. He showed up just before we left carrying a gas can so he could fill up. Meanwhile that dock was tied up for half an hour with about 30 boats all trying to get in.

A couple guys were asking how to do a fish boil so I thought I would repost the recipe for them:
Had a couple guys asking for the fish boil recipe here ya go:
Corn on the cob
red potatoes
small onions or a couple large onions
Bag of carrots
Fish (salmon, steelhead or lake trout)
Non Iodized salt 1/2 cup per gallon of water (kosher salt is best)
melted butter
I do this on my turkey fryer. a half cup of salt for every gallon of water. Put corn and water in the pot and put on the heat Let it boil five minutes add half the salt and add all the potatoes carrots onions. bring back to a rolling boil 15 minutes add fish 10 minutes done. A friend of mine also adds a couple pounds of crawfish or andouille sausage or smoked sausage.

The only release I have found to work good is the otters. You can jam it in as hard as you want to stop it from releasing. but when a fish hits it will release just fine.

big jon otter release

How are you rigging your boards then...It never fails we can tell the person with the rods in there hands to keep the rod tip aimed at the boards until they are at the back of the boat so the board doesn't dive....the board dives on them every time. We've lost a few boards to broken lines this way. Allowing the boards to release has helped us a lot with this problem.
Not only that but it is easier to pull it in to change lures and you dont have to fight around the inside board with a fish on. When a fish hits it falls to the center of the boat and no tangles.

40 - 50 ft so you can cut back as needed on copper and leadcore.

John I have the boat home and have to get it rigged. I've got all the walleye gear off. If I do it will be very last minute. My equalizers are flipped on my trailer and I am trying to get it in Friday night to get them flipped back. If not it will have to go in to the trailer shop Saturday.

i'll have my boat back on this side of the state sunday. looking forward to getting out on lake michigan.

So do any of you guys/gals use bait on those "peanuts"? Like smelts or trout belly?
Nope just a treble hook or dual singles. If anything you can add a fly body or a squid body like Jimmy does.

Dodgers and spin n glos or dodgers and squids are what we run most. 1.5-1.9 on the speed. the trick is to stand at the rigger and keep it just ticking the bottom. The best method to figure leader length on a dodger is three times the length of the dodger. I typically try to keep shorter lead length from the cannon ball 15 ft or so. The trick is to find the area that the trout like the bottom. Ask wherever you go and find out where the lake trout typically are at.

Welcome aboard well see ya out there some time as I fish out of Holland when I am done walleye fishing in Monroe. If ya have any questions just give a holler.

I was having noise issue like that with my hds unit. started working through everything trying to figure it out. After buying resistor plugs changing wires etc etc. I talked to lance valentine at the show and his recommendation was to hook the unit direct to a battery not connected to the engine and see what it does. I also had noise in my marine radio. Noise was gone. I went and got a small deep cycle and hooked it to the unit and no more issues. I got like a 24 series battery and can fish on it for 6-9 trips before I top it off with an overnight charge. The problem when you start adding filters is you start reducing power to the unit which in turn decrease's the unit sensitivity.

Is Kay still around and writing cookbooks? I remember in the early 80s working the shows for the steelheaders with my dad. we were two booths down and the smells of her food cooking drove us nuts. Everything that lady cooked was awesome. One night after the show closed she came down to our booth with something for us to try. It was deep fried pickles. She was trying them on us as she loved them and wanted to see others reactions. I loved em. This was about 1980 or so. I have a few of her cook books but always looking to add from her as I never had a bad thing out of recipes.

Why dont you want them to release? I have all my boards set to release and fish them daily that way. Never would want it any other way.
Same here. it is such a PITA fighting the board with a fish on it. board release pegged in place by an or16 and you fight the fish just like the board isn't there. reel it to the tip fight the fish the rest of the way in. No pointing the rod at the board and fighting a diving board with a fish pulling.

Has anyone put the new Torpedo swivel tip on their Talora roller guide wire rods and if so are you satisfied. The torpedo version is about half the price of Aftco swivel tips.
For those with swivel tips: do you have less curl vs standard tips?
Thanks,
Grey Beard
I have them on my blue diamond rods and like them. They have an extra guide ring inside that makes sure the line stays on the roller I personally like them better than the aftcos. AS far as line curling I don't think there is a way to stop that
Planer Board Storage

I have a cooler box that looks like a mini fridge mounted in my cabinet in the cabin. I dont use it for keeping stuff cold. I have a regualr cooel that i use as it gets stuff colder. I do use it to store my planer boards on the bottom shelf and my divers on the top shelf.
