Alternator Problems

Recommended Posts

I had a boatload of mechanical problems this year. Nothing major, but they take their toll in $$ and downtime. I just recently replaced a defective Alternator that was overcharging. I could have just replaced the regulator but decided to go the distance and replace the 21 yo alternator. It was cheaper than rebuilding the old one. The new alternator performed well until the main charging wire broke close to the alternator. It was just the terminal so an EZ fix. Since repairing it my Voltmeter doesn't go up to 14V like before. I'm thinking the alternator may be toast. I checked V @ Alternator and the reading is the same. The alternator has a 1 yr no hassle War. But @#%# what else can go wrong. I want to go to Manistee Tue. I hope I can get it resolved before then.:) Chit happens but why me???:)

Frank, I too have had my share of problems and $$ this year!! Must be the year for 21 year old boats. First I had my boots on the outdrive leaking which caused gimble brearing to go bad so I replaced all that. Things were going pretty well for a number of trips then spun the engine coupler ($400):(. Had to tear everything down again and pull the engine. Got all that completed and things went back together really easy:) then the starter goes

bad:(. Replaced that and have never had the motor roll over so well in the 6 years that I have had the boat. OK we are ready now "NOT". After 4 trips the solonoid on the new starter goes bad so had to tear that back off again and have that replaced. Hopefully once you are done with everything you will have a very reliable rig:). Good luck with your boat and Manistee.

I replaced all my bellows and gimbal bearing over the Winter just to play it safe. My exhaust bellows was showing some slight checking. I check the bellows every Winter, and change them at the first sign of any deterioration.:) I also changed the trim and limit senders. The trim sender was bad, and the bellows needed to be removed for this job anyway. I had my carburetor off for cleaning and float adjustments over the Winter also.

I just got an Email from the alternator shop. They said it may take awhile for the battery to come all the way up and read 14 volts while running. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.:)
