Aaron Nusbaum Posted September 14 Posted September 14 Not a lot went right. We set lines at 6 in about 100 ft. Right away we had back to back hits on our downriggers but neither stayed on. Within about an hour we were already retreating to 80 ft due to waves building. After an hour or so of nothing in 80 ft we went into 60 ft and saw some enticing marks. We spent a little over an hour throwing everything we had at them but no takers so we decided to try the pier heads. We did a few laps in and out of the harbor and skirted the mud line but only managed a sheephead and a bass so we bagged it. I'm hoping to hit them in the harbor this fall but I'm starting to wonder how much of a run we're gonna get Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App 6
littleboat Posted September 14 Posted September 14 You gave it a good try. The waves certainly haven't been reading the forecast correctly. Playing your other options, I thought, was a good strategy. I would have loved to see you turn over a walleye. The fall is still young, but I agree that the run is going to be interesting this year.Sent from my SM-A156U1 using Great Lakes Fisherman mobile app 1
FBD Posted September 14 Posted September 14 Man I feel better now. Got out at 6:30 saw like six lights on the horizon set up in 85 and started surfing them out. Took a 3# king on a rigger down 46’ in 90 then missed another bump and run on the same. Soon thereafter took a mature but silver 9# hen 85’ down on a paddle. Just started to turn back into them and the 300’ copper started trickling out, got a cute little 16” king that went back. Reset that sat down and started to turn and it exploded but my daughter choked with bad technique and lost it about 2/3 of the way in. At that point we were in 130’ and when we turned around waves were washing the bow of the 14’ too often. Wanted to change lures and try to fine tune things but just hammering into them back to 80’ was a handful. At 80 we pulled them but should not have as we we were only able to go 5.5 mph until it laid down a bit in 40’. 2
FBD Posted September 14 Posted September 14 This will be the last year for any run at Holland; it got its last plant of kings three years ago. Next two ports south got those fish instead… 1
