fishin with herring and wire diver questions??

Recommended Posts

Ok so I used to salmon fish heavy about ten years ago since then the demise of lake huron has ocurred. Alot has changed in the salmon game since then or maybe it is just from switching sides of the state. I have ran wire before but with the old standard size dipsies now I have mags so was wondering where they are running so I can get closer to my riggers when they start getting hit. I also have never ran herring at all befor wednesday night and that was all that got hit that night no hook ups just hits I have done quite a bit of research online as far as the softball size rotation with the little bend and such I bought big weenie brand meat rigs plan on running them behind matching color spin doctors some off wire and some off downriggers. I bought strips they seem to be to small for the rigs if that possible which is better whole or strips can you even use whole herring or just like whole alewifes? I think I was running my wire dipsies below my downriggers whoops that was a funky lookin school of bait. Oh and I was always told that the old standard dipsies on mono bottomed out at around 40 down is that correct?

As far as the whole verses the strips, I always like the strips better. They fit perfect into the heads for me. The whole ones are a bit of a pain to work into the head.

I don't see a problem with running your dipsey lower than your DR.

I think the mono dipsies will dive a little farther than that. I had problems getting them to achieve that depth on a higher setting. The few time that I still use a mono dipsey, I don't run it back more than 125'.

Mark, Welcome aboard. A wire diver with a mag diver on the 1.5 setting will run close to %50 of line out. 100' out=50' down.

I bought some Herring strips and ran them from my low diver, but have not gotten a hit on them yet.
