  1. Some of the Manufactures of the products we will be using in the WMFL would like to have photos with there products in them. Here's a few tips to take better shots.

One of the biggest mistakes is to not pay attention to you backgrounds. This is a descant shot but, there's a open Red cooler in the back ground (not some thing that would ever go to print).

In bright sunny day you have to watch for shadows. Try to put the sun at you back. Hats will make some ones face very dark. If its possible with your camera turn on the flash. This shot would have been great if only I would of used my flash.

Also when ever possible try to fill the frame with your pitcher. (Smile for the camera Tim)

Here's a shot where I put it all together and had the sun to my back with no clutter in the background, and fill flash to eliminate dark spots.

  2. Welcome aboard. A good rule of thumb is to start shallow (as in shallow water and depth down) and finish deep. This may not hold true in the early spring. Green Dolphin spoon has been a stand buy lure for many. Green fly/flasher/dippsey is also very reliable. These thins start in the dark so get a few Extended Glow spoons. Most guys including myself if asked will give plenty of info when out there. All are instructed to use channel 72 on the radio. Good luck and don't be afraid to walk up and talk to guys that did better than you.

  3. We hit the river Friday morning. Got a late start but was on the water by 10 am. It was a beautiful day but the fishing was real spotty. We only managed to boat 1 walleye (21 incher) in 5 hrs. It came on a green jig head w/ a twister tail and tipped with a minnow. The most fish I heard of cauht in 1 boat was 5. More suckers than anything else. Water temp was 50 degrees.

Was in contact with a couple of friends that were fishing Erie out of Luna Pier and they got completely skunked on Friday.

I herd the guys where doing good up river. We're going down there Sat. night and Sun. AM this weekend.

  4. Find the warmer water and ya just might find some eyes. Minnow type baits orange bellies, Silver and black, Blue and Gold. Trolling anywhere from 1.5-2.5 MPH. It seemed like changing up was what they wanted. It was a slow bite but a beautiful morning to be on the water.:) We had surface water temps as high as 55 degrees. Warm shallow water is the key.

Nice bunch of Cookie cutters Frank.

  5. Buy a couple of church boards aka walley boards and run them out away from the boat just like a surface line on an inline board. I usually set them 75 to 100ft out after i let the full core out. Set the releases tight as you dont want them to trip on a fish. Its lead core so you dont have to set the hook as there is almost no strech in the lead core. When fish hit lead core they are hooked up. Dont horse them or you will pull the hooks right out of the mouth of the fish just real them in and let them fight. keep the line tight. after the fish hits I usuall give them a second to straghten the line behind the boat. Real it up and pull the board off of your line and away you go. After you catch a few 20lb ers on core you will be more apt to let other peope real them in as it is a work out for your arms. Catch a ton of fish and your arms will be ripped by the end of the summer. Very productive way to catch more fish.

Great advice. When you get a fish landed and have to put them back out, let the full core out the back, hook the board on, let the board float back that 75 to 100' then tighten the line and it will pull out around your dippsey.

The Church/Walleye boards are the best option.

  6. Thanks Bill.

Nice picture Ken. What are you using for a cameral and lense?

I have two Canon DSLRs. A 10d and a 1D. I used the 1D and a 70-200 mm sigma lens. with a 1.4 Extender. I had to crop this pic quite a bit to get it close, so It look a bit soft.

I'm going to keep trying to get a real close one but, as soon as he sees me he heads the other way. He will dive out in 25' of water and come up 75 yards away.

I wish they would stay longer, they are beautiful foul.

  7. Stick with the two riggers and add two dippseys, then add two Full core rods. The Gander in Lansing carries the Gander Mountain brand and they are comparable to Heartland in make and price. "Warning" buying rods and reals can be addictive, before long you'll have six and want ten.

If you want to have fun, learn a few things, and meet a few members the tournaments that Rich runs are a great way.

  9. Nailer, when did you fish Detour? That was my favoritae spot for years. Took a vacation there every year from about 1987 to 2003, usually the first full week in August. What a beautiful spot and the fishing used to be great.

Mike, My aunt owns the Raber Bay Landing Resort. We have been going up there for the last 10 years. The fishing has really fallen off in the past two years. Here's a few shots from a few years back. The Tall ugly one on the right is me.
