  1. I have been working on putting together a small group of ice anglers for the Saginaw Bay this year, 1st weekend in February, and then again the last weekend in February. Well, we decided not to make it onto the bay with less than ideal conditions and the reports of rescues, snowmachines and quads going in.

Instead, we packed it up and headed to NW Michigan to traverse upon some frozen lakes up there.

Had a fantastic weekend of fishing.

Following a HOT tip from FM2, we went to NW MI with one of his buddies and went lookin for some perch and herring. We turned in and were back up at 5 am. Great day fishing as the fish were hungry. We fished the morning and kept about 20 nice perch apiece with a bunch of throwbacks. Went in to clean fish and grab a bite to eat about 130 pm. Went out on Bear Lake for a couple hours in the evening hoping for an eye or two, and only a couple dink perch and 3 ppike to show for it.

Back up yesterday morning at 5, and back after the perch. Fished till about 11 am and kept another 15-20 keeper a piece with a nice Herring.

We would have had a good time regardless, however, with the great perch action I am still grinning ear to ear. Looking to get back up that way before it's all said and done.

Have a nice bunch of perch filets ready for the fry pan, and am going to give the herring a whirl.

Tons of ice, and tons of snow....:thumb:

  2. Matt....I'm slipped in Arcadia,MI at the Arcadia Marine boat docks...then some years I move up to Frankfort ,Mi after labor day depending on fish movements at that time of year..:thumb:

That's my favorite port to go out of. I will check in you when I pull the boat over and see about lunch @ Riggers

  3. Nice job Jason! We have minimal ice on our lake west of you. Been 2-4 inches all season, just when I start thinking of putting my shanty out, it warms up and we lose a couple inches. Looks like it won't happen this winter.

I took the snowmobile with me, which was fine with that kind of ice. But with this 2nd warm up, next time I'll be on foot and spudding about until I have a good idea how the ice is. It sure has been a crazy winter AGAIN. There is another lake SW of me that I really want to get on for the crappie, but I'm reluctant as it's deep and there is a stream that flows into it.

  4. I deal with it all the time in a different capacity, but it's still sales. From time to time you get someone that feels that they know than you, and yet you're the profesional. As you mention, I do it the same, I spell it out very clearly and ultimately tell the customer that it is up to them. And in the end if there is an issue you have the assurance that you did your dilligence and warned them about the pitfalls of what they have suggested. Some people really want to save a buck anywhere they can. Doesn't always make sense to me, and if/when they come crying you could almost just say....well...I told ya so.

  5. Had the pleasure to be invited to a private lake, that one of my partners at the office lives on, to fish. We fished it about a month ago, and had good action.

I made my way to the same spot from a month ago, and one hole drilled and I was putting fish on the ice.

Had a fun day of fishing with the guys from the office that are just getting started.

I put my limit of gills on the ice, most came on waxies on a blue halis and the rest came on a yellow / orange tear drop.

As the morning bite tapered off I put the vex back to use. What I saw was that the fish were there, but not as active. I brought my lures up from close to the bottom, up off the bottom 5-6', only in 10 fow. Shortly after doing this the screen lit up from the top down. They were biting light, but with a fast hand I continued to put them on the ice.

    Good weather, good fishing.

Now we'll see what this warm up does to the ice, hopefully it will stick around for a bit.

Good luck & be safe out there :thumb:

  6. Well, snow last night, turned to rain overnight with a good crusty mix on the ground. Run off will likely make the river not safe IMO, I was on 4" of ice on Saturday in Bay City. Non stop action of juvenille walleye with one on the ice that made it home with me.

I too plan on hitting the bay this weekend......good luck, b safe
