  1. Says meat and dairy products pose greater threat People may worry about PCBs in salmon, but most Americans actually get their yearly PCB load through beef, chicken, pork and milk, says a University of Idaho professor in a recently published article. In an article in the March/April issue of Aquiculture Magazine, Ronald W. Hardy, director of Hagerman Fish Culture Experiment Station, University of Idaho, says concerns about contaminants in salmon have been overstated, particularly within the context of the American diet. Americans eat vastly more meat and dairy than they do salmon, he says, and both meat and dairy contain PCB levels as high, or higher, than salmon. Salmon also has health benefits that most meats lack. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average American ate 62 lbs of beef, 57.5 lbs of chicken, 48.5 lbs of pork and 15.9 lbs of fish and shellfish in 2003. Salmon intake was 2.2 lbs that same year, hardy says. The PCB content of most wild and farmed salmon is about the same, in the range of 15 to 20 parts per billion (ppb). In contrast, butter contains 70 ppb, a chicken breast 32 ppb and a beef steak 22 ppb, Hardy says. What this means is that animal per capita PCB intake from beef is about 640 ppb, about 700 ppb for milk and about 836 ppb from chicken. The average American is getting about 20 ppb from salmon each year, he says. “Levels in most salmon are equivalent to the levels in English muffins,†Hardy says. “Go figure.â€

  7. This is your chance to show off your writing skills. If anyone has a story or article that would fit into the feature article section, send me a PM with information about it for consideration. I am looking for fishing trip stories, information articles, and how to articles. A "hot" new fishing technique that is very informative would also do. Stories should be a minimum of 500 words. If you have pictures that need to go with them, I will add them for you. If you have any questions, ask away. Mike

  17. What is the Captain's Chair? The Captain's Chair is a private area on the forums. Charter Captains and the site admin are the only members who can access this area. Talk about or discuss what you wish in private without worrying about it being in the regular forums.
  18. Please introduce yourself. Also tell us the name of your charter service and what port(s) you charter out of.
  19. Well folks, I am still working on this. I have canned the idea of using South Haven due to lack of parking and no area for the weigh in. Instead, the tournament will be going out of Muskegon. I have Sunday 18 June booked at Fisherman's Landing in Muskegon. There is plenty of parking at Fisherman's Landing and they also have a camp ground. Normally there is a $10 launch fee. But, I have booked it as a tournament, so there will only be a $5.00 launch fee. They have a fish cleaning facility there also, but there is a $5.00 fee per person for cleaning fish. How many folks would be willing to fish on Fathers Day, Sunday June 18th?
  20. I have used the JB weld on an aluminum boat before. Which ever way you go, make sure you clean it up good first. I used a scotch wheel on the end of a drill to clean the area I used the JB weld on.
  21. Did you check these out at Bass Pro? If you ever drive a boat with NFB, you will never want to drive another one without it.

I opened this poll back up.
  23. Excuse my error on this. I had the poll close after 10 days by mistake. I opened it up again. Reply to this thread if you are interested on going on the tour.
  24. I guess I should have made myself a little clearer. I was talking 30' plus size boats. What does it cost to have one shrink wrapped? What does it cost for inside/outside storage?
