  1. I'd like some feedback on this reel if anyone has it. I bought one this past weekend new for $40.00. I needed two more linecounter reels and figured I'd take a chance on something I hadn't researched before purchasing so I bought just one. I figured I've spent that much in a bar and didn't have anything to show for it in the morning. As always....thanks!
  2. I was checking at Jay's sporting goods in Clare today, the Okuma Magna45's are selling for $39.95.
  3. Made it home, I posted a report with pics.
  4. Just got home from Big Bay de Noc, spent Saturday and Sunday fishing on Kates Bay which is a part of Big Bay de Noc, on the Garden Peninsula. Stayed with my friend Bruce who is a resident there. I lived 22 years on the garden Peninsula and this was like going back home. I'm on the left, Bruce on the right. First day we fished out of my fish trap portable, another friend (Mike) offered the use of his shanty but the high winds the previous night flipped it on its side and froze down. Mike got it flipped upright and we were able to use it the second day. We got things set up and I caught 2 keeper perch right off the bat, then Bruce caught a burbot. I caught a couple more keeper perch and then I caught a burbot. I don't know how many of you eat burbot, but we do. We call it poor man's lobster. Boil it after cutting into bite size pieces and then dunk in melted butter....mmmmm, good! Pic of some of our perch. We were fishing in 22-24 feet of water those two days, using minnows and wigglers. We used perch rigs with orange beads, Bruce had more luck with that than I did. I had the best luck with a purple jig with gold flecks of glitter, tipped with a wiggler. We went through 4 dozen wigglers and then started using just a minnow head. Seems the perch bit better on a part minnow than a whole one. Bruce and I didn't keep track of how many we brought through the hole and released....but we guessed it to be around 60 dinks. We kept 27 nice sized perch and those 2 burbots. I had a great time, managed to curl a few 12 oz. busch lights to keep up with my exercise program .....but I am glad to be back home.
  5. I planned a trip up to Big Bay de Noc and possibly over to Little Bay for this weekend to go ice fishing about 2 months ago.....having no idea how warm it would be now. I hear theres lots of ice still in the bays.....but I wonder how much slush there will be on top. Hope to give a report with some pictures of fish on my return. Otherwise, I'm sure we'll manage to do some 12 oz. light curls.
  6. Mike, I got a chance to look at past posts here.....and I just want to say, if you get a chance from someone that is looking for anybody to try out walleye lures, jigs, rods, reels, etc......I'm interested! I'll even try out perch and bluegill stuff! I couldn't resist teasing you seeing how many things there have been available for trout, salmon guys.
  7. I'd be interested.....sending PM.
  8. Thanks again. I've never used one (obviously) and I worry a bit about snagging my lures/harness on them or tangling a fish in them. Would a Troll plate be an alternative?
  9. Thanks fellas. Aiden must have remembered his expierience.....this morning, according to his mom, he told her "I got the BIG one"! He thinks he caught the lure.....how priceless is that.
  10. Well that makes sense. I went out to the shop and got all the info: Motor: GM 4 cylinder 140 (140 h.p. ?) Outdrive: Mercruiser 4 Prop: Michigan Wheel 031026 13.75x21 It seems to me when we were on Big Bay de Noc last fall on calm water with my son and I, all our gear, our top speed was 35 ish. A little faster would be nice, but then I give up on the low end right? I need to slow down to around 1 m.p.h. for pulling bottom bouncers and it seems I couldn't get any slower than around 2.5-3 m.p.h. Suggestions? Thanks!
  11. Thanks fellas, I'll look for those numbers and post them here. I have a 140 horsepower straight 4 cylinder GM motor. (wish it was a V-8 sometimes, but she do sip fuel with the 4) I'm lousy with acronyms so here is another question....what is WOT?
  12. Welcome Noah. Glad you found us, you'll enjoy a wealth of knowledge and good folks here.
  13. Can some of you guys school me in props? I am looking for a new/used one for my boat to have as a spare and I get confused about what I need. Seems to be a lot of choices. My boat is a 1984 Thompson with a Mercruiser outdrive. Here is where I get confused and maybe it doesn't matter, but will a prop for any Mercruiser work on mine? Does it go by what the "name" of the unit is? What pitch prop should I get to slow my boat speed down? Which one to ski behind? Pic of what I have but I don't know the "name" of it. Thanks in advance for the education.
  14. Welcome to GLF. All I can say is I had a Sea Nymph years ago and it served me well.
  15. Looks like it came from the factory that way....excellent job!
  16. Welcome Eric, Nice bunch of members on this forum, you are sure to enjoy them as well as all the knowledge you will find here. Nice boat!
  17. They say, take a kid fishing....I did that today. I was very proud to take my son and grandson out ice fishing today. He is 3 1/2. The morning started out well, we got holes bored and he and I sat down to start fishing while my son bored more holes. My plan was to just sit in one spot with my grandson and introduce him to the sport. Man are we ever bundled up for the cold! He was doing pretty good, but as all toddlers do he became curious of his srroundings, saw his daddy fishing outside of the shanty and wanted to see him.....well when he turned around he walked right into one of the holes...fell in to his knee.....boot and sock soaked. So my son takes off the boot and tries drying it over the heater. So, we are back to fishing, and drying. Look at the bend in that rod! Aiden is hooked up with a monster and he is reelin like crazy....not realizing his dad is holding the line and jigging the whole time. Hey, it gave the little guy something to do and we could keep fishing. And finally, after a tough morning of reelin and fallin in the hole, he was plumb tuckered out. We caught zero fish, not even a bite....but this was a proud day for me....3 generations out fishing and enjoying each others company.....and that's what it's all about for me! Thanks for looking.
  18. Name: Steve Ash Age: 52 Residence Location: Charlotte, Michigan (Eaton County) Area(s) Most Often Fished: Bays de Noc. Practically lived on Big Bay de Noc Years of Experience: Grandpa took me fishing when I was about 6 Boat Size and Info: 19' Thompson I/O, Lowrance HDS5, T-mast and planer boards, Shoreline trailer Boat Name: Kristen Lynn I'm probably the only person on this forum who doesn't fish for Salmon/Trout. Not that I don't want to learn, just never had the opportunity. I am mostly a walleye, perch and northerns guy only because that's all I have done. My wife loves to fish which is a blessing....no complaints about buying more tackle, etc. in fact she asked me today if I have bought any Berkley Flicker Shads yet. I was raised on a 2,000 acre farm, but left it in 1989 to become a building contractor which I have done since. I love the water, not only love to fish but I have been into scuba diving since 1974. Served on two sheriff's search and rescue dive teams, certified advanced open water, ice diver, equipt. maintenance, night diver along with training in search and rescue. There.....you know just about everything about me. Oh, I also have done a complete frame off resoration to my 1969SS396 Chevelle which we used to go all over the state competing and participating in car show. Now you know it all....
  19. My cousin has his 35' there, but I didn't know anyone could launch there. I assumed (you know what they say) that the grounds were for people who kept there boats at the marina.
  20. Can't say as I blame you Aaron and good thing you nipped it in the butt (so to speak) early on.
  21. Any suggestions on a place I can launch on Lake Erie near Detroit and easy to get in and out of. My boat isn't all that big...a 19'.
  22. Wow....that was real close. One time a older fella was sitting next to me and I struck up a conversation with him about how nice it was at the stadium, and how I liked the fans. He said I feel the same way.....as I sat looking at him every so often it dawned on me who I was sitting next to.....the great Paul Hornung! I thought it best to not say anything more for fear of appearing like an idiot to him.
