Maybe this will help - the amount of backing should be - IMHO - the MAXIMUM you can add to the reel that you can - so I have a 6 rod copper set - which I put together myself - if I have one that has 150' copper - I have about a 20' leader of mono on the business end - then I back that with as much 50# braid I can - this allows me to put out a bit more backing in between the copper and the board - then I can put out any length I need to put the board at whatever distance from the boat I want. You can gain a bit of depth with more line between the board and the copper by increasing the length. As I understand it - some actually add an inline weight between the lure and the copper to gain more depth too...not sure if that helps - just my 2 cents...

3 for 4 3 kings 8#, 10#, 18# All between 180-220 fow 2 smaller ones came on dipseys, 150 out braid with Mountain Dew SD and fly, and the other on wire, 200 out with green SD and fly. Biggest king came on DR 150 down with white SD and white crinkle fly Lost a nice rocket steelhead on 300 copper with mag RV moonshine spoon, can't remember the name. Very little on the screen until we trolled back towards harbor, then it lite up in the 135-100 range but no takers. It was good to get a few in the box, heading out this morning again. Looks like the lake is going to flip - 40-50 degs. near the beach just reported - I hope they show up at some point - but I have the boat for sale too as we are preparing to make a move to Florida in the not-to-distant future....I hope to be out next week for 2-4 days - tight lines!
