I have never tried for browns, is the fishing any good in Ludington for them in the spring?
-
Don't the dipsy divers run deeper than the Walkers?
-
I would try to make the Ludington outing.
-
I run copper lines on one side of the boat, and the leadcore off the other side.
-
Is that a meat rig? Are flashers available and where do you buy?
-
I run 1 meat rig off my deepest downrigger, when I run more than one the rigs don't seem to be as effective. I used to run them off a wire dipsey, but I felt there was too much drag from the large flasher, even when I run off the downrigger I use a rubber band on the release. This setup seemed to run best in July through the first part of August out of Ludington. Then after that the meat rig bite went away.

The hardest hits and the biggest fish I caught this last summer came off Black Mamba Glow with the red teasers using cut bait off the deep downrigger at 140' - 150' feet down. The fish hit so hard they were breaking the treble hooks in their mouth. There were days I couldn't keep it in the water. The only problem is running that deep you lose fish trying to get the slack reeled in to set the hook.

When it costs $400 to go out for the day it's tough to do that on a regular basis. I would like to get a bigger boat with a 12' beam, but then I would probably have to turn the fishing into a paying proposition like a charter captain.

There has been a very nice 42' ? SeaRay for sale at the Ludington City Marina the last couple of years. Charter boat named SNAFU, gotta love that name. Completly decked out with all the gear and very low hours. I had to ask him the price, think he was asking 150.
-
What method are you going to use to get rid of the SeaRay?
-
That is good information.

I have this system operating on my boat, using Hummingbird radio and GPS/Fishfinder. I talked to the Coast Guard in Ludington 2 summers ago when I hooked the system up to find out if the Coast Guard monitors this type of signal and at that point they did not in Michigan. They said Wisconsin did, but given that this signal is line of sight, the probability of them receiving the signal from our side of Lake Michigan was not good. I have not checked lately to see if this has changed, but I hope it has. The ability to transmit an SOS with your coordinates is invaluable.

The problem I had was using eyelets with ceramic inserts, the knot connecting the copper to the leader or the backing would eventually knock the insert out causing problems. A solid eye is necessary I bought some of the Okuma copper rods, and they work well.

Your camera takes nice pictures, what are you using?
-
You can tell he is not from Michigan.

I don't know about the imitation rigs, but cut bait was my hottest setup this summer, especially the Black Mamba Glow with the red teasers.

I always get action on a 10 color down the chute.

Lead Core catches fish.

I guess I can't remember exactly what the pressure gauges read, I think that when the needle on the gauge is straight up it is at 40# which is what the port motor is running at, the starboard is running about 10# less than that at idle but picks up as more power is applied. As far as oil pumps go, can they cause low pressure, or is it that they either work or don't?
-
The motors are very clean, no leaks or rust. They almost look new. They both run excellent, I just noticed this summer that the starboard engine oil pressure seemed to be running a little on the low side compare to the other engine. Neither engine uses any oil, so my first thought is just the hours on the starboard motor is the reason. I would be disappointed if I lost a motor during the season so I thought I would start exploring my options.
-
The motors have Thunderbolt ignitions, and if I read the manual right they do not have points and condensers, but I have never visually verified that. Not even sure what type of ignition this is.
-
Fuel injection would be a nice upgrade
-
Those motors are a little wack price wise, but the remanufactured engines don't look too bad pricewise. It's funny, my neighbor just put a GM 350 crate motor in his pickup, and I don't think he paid over $1,500.00 for a brand new motor.

This question should get some responses that will help in my decision making. The 1984 Searay I own has two Mercruiser 205's that are in original condition. Both motors run well and do not use any oil. The hourmeters on both engines were disconnected so I have no idea how many hours are on them, although the starboard motor that has the power steering probably has most of the trolling hours. To be proactive I would like to have both rebuilt or replaced with crate motors. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of each process as well as the cost comparison would be appreciated. Also, where to take to have the work done that would do a professional job first thing in the spring. Thank you in advance..
