  1. Dad and I went out just after sunup. Set lines in 70 fow heading wsw. First fish hit 75 fow on copper pulling a wrecked um fly. Second fish took a green dolphin spoon I repainted in 85 fow 60 down on a rigger. Third fish took a no see um fly on a full core in 110 fow. Fourth fish hit and broke off the repainted green dolphin, 150 fow. Last fish of the morning was a shaker caught on a JP Slammer glow fire dog 150 back on a dipsy over 115 fow, shaker. Pulled lines 11:45. Mom decided to take a short trip with us in the evening. We set lines around 7:20 in 70 fow heading s. Took a hit before setup was complete on mongolian beef 70 dn 75 fow, lost on drag malfunction. Then we took a small laker, released, on same setup over 95 fow. Next fish came 104 fow on a dipsy pulling a no see um fly, 150 back. Same combo took next 2 fish, one at 104 fow and 116. Next was the other dipsy also set 150 back pulling a JP Slammer glow fire dog in 111 fow. Last fish came in 100 fow on the no see um setup. Pulled lines at 9:55. Not bad for 2 and a half hour trip. Morning trip was pretty flat- evening, well let's just say it wasn't a foot or less.

  6. Hey Mark, It's a great fly for me. Gary has come up with some wild names for his stuff, but it works. BTW- I love that joke too.
  7. Another good day of fishing out of Grand Haven. Headed out to 100ft and set lines heading nnw. First fish hit on a Wrecked um fly with a green SD in 124 fow off 300 copper. Second fish took a Green Dolphin 85 down on a rigger in 137 fow. Trolled out to 150 with nothing else so we headed back on sse troll. Third fish hit the Green Dolphin again same setup in 133 fow. We had a release at 124 fow on Glow Fire Dog JP Slammer set at 77ft on a rigger. Our last fish was another hit on the copper setup at 134 fow on the Wrecked um fly. All kings- 3 10 lbs and a 4 lbs. Then the fog rolled in. WOW!!!!!! That was not a fun trip in! But it was a great time from 7-9.
  8. I started by checking local bait shops, sporting goods stores and Ebay for some quality used stuff. Replace all the lines with new and cleaned up some of the equipment. I have had look luck with the Okuma reels (30,45,55) and also run a few Cabelas (45) with upgraded drags. Most I bought used 4 years ago and just changed drags this year. As Nick said buy something that will you can afford and will last as long as possible. You can catch a lot of fish without downriggers so I would put them as a lower priority. I bought $20 downrigger rods and have no problems with them. Most rods can be used for more than one delivery method. I think most of mine are med - med/heavy. If you can find them at different lengths that may also help, 8.5-10ft. I agree with Nick about rods to start with and a set of inline planer boards- like the church walleye, offshore, or the Z boards. I use Berkley Big Game #25 for mono, Cabelas leadcore 27#, and Opti 45# copper. I have used the Cabelas welded ring premium ball bearing swivels without any problems. I like Cabelas if you couldn't tell. Just a tip- Wherever you go for your equipment- be sure you know prices of others before buying. You can stumble into some good deals sometimes, but can also get soaked if you're not careful. Good luck and keep us informed. We like to spend others' money as well as our own.
  9. Thanks for the insight. Lost my dipsy off my wire line but got the leader and plug back. I know wierd, right.
  10. Since we're supposed to have bad weather on Wednesday, I decided to get one last trip in tonight. We went 2 for 3. Dad and I headed out and dropped our gear in 100 fow. We picked up our first fishon a sw troll in 121 fow on 300 copper with a jj macmuffin. Second fish we found at 100 fow 80 down on a rigger dragging a mag green dolphin on a e troll. The release we had was when Dad was taking a picture of the sunset. When I turned around the rod had popped. I reeled as fast as possible, but no joy, the fish was gone. BTW-- If you find yourself fishing in front of the pierheads in 120 fow watch out for a large white jug. It appears to be marking something large or immovable. I got a little to close to it tonight. There aren't any nets there, are there???? Keep 'um tight Bob
  11. Wow ! We had a heck of a storm roll though Grand Haven last night. The light show was awesome. Anyway, Dad and I made it out before the storm and had a nice 4 for 4 evening. We set lines in 115 fow and trolled sw. Turned west out to 170 with no luck so we heading back in. Set a ne troll and picked up a coho on a rigger 70 down in 117 fow on a mag green dolphin. Pulled a uturn went back through heading sw, picked up a king at 118 on the same rod. Made another turn coming throught the area picked up another king 110 fow, same rod. So we pulled another turn and as we went through, yep you guessed it, the same rod went at 108 fow with another king. Pulled lines at 9pm. Strange that all the fish caught were on the same rod.
  12. Nice job Jim! I heard you on the radio last night. I'm glad Abbie got herself a nice king. Priceless moment!
  13. Finally made it back to the cabin today. We tossed the boat in, and ran out for a short trip. Started setting lines around 7 at 70 fow and trolled sw. Picked up a nice king in 104 fow on a full core with a picked sunshine/green sd. Headed nw and picked up a shaker on mag green dolphin on a dipsy set 125 back in 120 fow. Same heading and fow picked up a nice coho on blue dolphin stingray on a dipsy set 150 back. Pulled lines at 930, ended 3 for 3. Nice to see the flies weren't around, unfortunately the fleas have arrived to take their place. Happy Father's Day to all you Dad's out there. Hope it was a good one!
  14. NOT COOL! Hopefully no one was hurt in anyway. Giving bad information about your favorite fishing hole is almost understandable, but bad info on a storm coming is ignorant. Person should be keelhauled.
  15. I'll test either- won't matter to me.
