  1. Dad and I went to pick up an order at Cabelas-Hoffman Estates, and decided to check out the locators and the bargin cave. Checking out the locators, we talked with a couple of salesman about a couple of units. We got looking at the 788ciHD. After drooling over it for a few minutes, we found out that the unit was on sale for $479.00, reg $649.00. The tag was on a different model. Decided to think about it for a while and wandered into the bargin cave and found a Lakemaster chip V1, $63, reg $120. I went back and talked with the sales guys again and asked them what they thought about the chip and was it worth geting the newer version or not. I found out that it the updated versions usually don't have updated information unless it is an added lake. After gift cards and redeeming my Cabelas points - we got us a new toy! WOO HOOO!!! If anyone is wondering, there was 4 left as of 11 this morning. Is it spring yet?? I want to go fishin'
  2. I've run them both ways. They just catch fish. Jimmy makes a great product!
  3. When I fish for walleye, it's done in the BWCA in MN in the late spring and summer. We normally fish a Little Joe with a minnow or leech. I started making my own with slight modifications. I was wondering if anyone uses the small spin n glows instead of a spinner? Is this a new/old idea? Is it successful/marginal? What do you guys use in MI? Trying to keep myself out of trouble by making new setups to runn this spring and summer. Thoughts?
  4. Mostly work, but I do get some cleaning done on my reels and other equipment.
  5. I noticed that Capt. Dan Keating is having another busy season with his seminars. I was wondering, if I've read his books and watched his videos, is it worth making a trip to see him in person? $55 a person + gas + food= ???? Has anyone been to one of his talks before? Anything new that's not in the books or videos? Thoughts?
  6. I have a couple of reels I'm looking to get rid of. All are in good working condition, all are used, all have had drags back off when not used. Not used enough to continue to store. I need the room for other items. First reel I have is an Okuma Convector CN30L. It's in good shape, just serviced, strong clicker, smooth drag, older model but has one-way bearing. $40 Next reel is an Okuma Classic 300L. Also serviced, clicker is okay, works great but the frame is a little worn w/ some scratches, also has an upgraded drag from Tuna Tom. $25 Last reel is a Daiwa Sealine SG27LC NOT AN ACCUDEPTH. Also just serviced, well used, has boat rash, smooth drag, counter works fine. The handle has some play in it. $35 The roller rod is a Okuma Convector CGL-TR-862M Trolling Rod with AFTCO Rollers. It's 8.5 ft, 2pc rod, brand new still in the plastic. I don't think a reel has been seated on it. Sorry no picture on this one yet $100 Feel free to ask any questions. Message me if your interested. $5 for shipping the reels, for the rod I need your zip. Thanks for looking
  7. I use tandem singles on my flies. When I first switched to the singles, my hook up ratio increased dramatically. I use the 4/0 octopus hook ssw by owner. I rarely miss a fish on flasher/fly setups. I have had lots of fish with both hooks in the fish's mouth. I've also had hooks go through the mouth hooking the fish and then hook from the outside in. That one is not so fun to deal with, but the fish gets into the boat. I set my hooks 180 degrees from each other. It kinda takes the inline thing outta play. I think the biggest thing with the hookset is having the sharpest hooks possible. That's why I like the Owner hooks. Good luck with the flies. I have one almost the same colors, only ran it twice last year beacause other flies were hot. Still think it's a good color.
  8. When you bounce the bottom, are you using a wireline rig and a lead ball or something else?
  9. Thanks guys! Calebas has some of these on sale in the bargin cave. What size should I go with? 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 or 1 inch?
  10. I was thinking about running a few of these next year, but was wondering if they only catch lakers? Are they more spring, summer, or fall rigs? What are the best colors? Best bouncing the bottom or can they be run anywhere in the water column? What size is best? Thanks in advance.
  11. Got started around 11:30 this morning. As we were heading out, lots of boats were coming in and fishing the channel. I didn't see anything on the graph so we just kept going. We set up in 75 fow heading nnw. We rolled out to 150 with no hits, so we came back in. Took the first hit at 134 fow. Continued e to 95 fow with nothing. So we headed back out. We bounced between 120 and 130 moving nnw and sse and picked up 5 more fish. It was slow going but we picked away at them. We picked up a shaker while pulling lines. Headed in at 5:30. Not a bad afternoon going 7 of 8. All fish 3-8 lbs. So what worked: Green Dolphin 70 dn on rigger- 2 hits Hybrid Yogurt fly 150 bk set on 1.5- 2 hits Pickeled Sunshinew/white SD- 2 hits Hello darlin 90 dn on rigger- 2 hits Keep Um' Tight!
  12. I agree with everything said. I also use a snubber on my wire setups. I know some people like them and some hate them. So... It's kinda up to you. I haven't lost a fish on my dipsy in 2 years.
  13. Got in a quick trip, 6-8:40, before the lake kicked up for the rest of the weekend. Setup in 70 fow and headed west. Didn't get a hit until 118 fow. Only went out to 130. Worked e-w trolls picking up fish in both directions. Speed was 2 mph at he ball, both directions. We went 5 for 6 in that range. Nothing real big but we had fun. Big fish for the night was 10lbs, others were 5-7lbs. Here's what worked: Dipsy 150 back set on 1.5, Mnt Dew flasher no see um fly- 2 fish Dipsy 125 back set on 1.5, Blue Bub flasher polar ice fly- 2 fish 300 45# copper, Wrecked em' fly green paddle- 1 fish Wonderbread J plug #3- 25 back 90 down- 1 fish lost at the boat Sounded like fishing was pretty good last week. I know it was better than sitting in a classroom with no air conditioning in 90+ heat. Hopefully the fish will be around next weekend too. Keep um' tight
  14. I have been field testing these 5 Yogurt Flies. They are made with 40lb leaders and VNC treble hooks. Two were UV, one was glow and the others were regular flies. These are truly well made flies. The fly bodies have withstood numerous fish and are still looking like new. With most flies, I change the hooks to tandem singles because of hookup problems, but with these, I didn't experience any problems in that department. This is a quality made rig that you will catch fish on. I have run these since the beginning of June with one fly standing out above the rest, the hybrid uv series. This fly was super! We caught several lakers and kings on this fly. Just last night, we caught a 16# King on it and the hook was buried deep in the fish's jaw. Thanks for making a quality product that withstands some punishment from the fish. Here are a few pictures of the fish we caught.
  15. Well, it's that time of the year again. I have fewer days on the lake since I have to head home to get my classroom ready, but not before fishing tonight. Took mom out again tonight. Hit the water about 430 and it was flat. Setup in 65 fow and worked north- south troll. We ended 5 for 7. We stayed mostly between 65 and 70 fow. Got hits on dipsy 120 back set on 1.5, 200 copper, 150 copper, and riggers down 63 and 25. Here's what worked: Yogurt Hybrid fly Mnt Dew Flasher- 3 hits, 5# king, 16# king BW Wrecked Em fly 11" green paddle- 1 hit, 13# king Silver j-plug- 1 hit, 13# king Green dolphin- 1 hit, shaker Oceana fly Blue Bubble Flasher-1 hit Good Luck for the rest of the season. I'll be making weekend trips till the boat goes into storage. So.... Keep um' tight!
  16. I've got them 60- 70 fow the last two nights. Nice 12-16lb fish.
  17. I took Mom out for an early evening trip, hitting the lake about 4pm. 70 fow, setting lines in the "about a foot" waves -NOT!- and a rigger popped with a nice coho. That was on a south troll. Got nothing else so I turned north. 77 fow we got the other rigger to go with a nice mature king. Then 200 copper goes crazy, nice king. Got another on the same setup 20 mins later. Pulled lines and headed in around 8. Best water 70-80 ft on the north troll from Bill Mar to the smokestack. Speed was 2-2.25 at the ball. What worked- carmel dolphin- 6 lb coho green dolphin - 15 lb king BW Wrecked Em fly behind 11 green flasher- 12 lb king, 10 lb king Keep um' tight!
  18. Well done Mark. That's awesome! Congrats.
