  1. At my app't at Discount Tire Friday found out blown tire was due to steel belt separation and other tire needed to be replaced also. With my road hazard warranty, new warranty and life time balance less that $100 out the door; wasn't sure that maybe the right tire being in th sun all the time next to my garage may have caused blowout; just in case instead of gift card for my birthday oldest son in Colorado is getting me tire covers for trailer and spare; it can't hurt. Mike: You catch a lot of fish in St. Joe; what do you think is your best technique that makes you so successful; how many lines do you normally run? Thanks.
  2. KICK'R: thanks! going to discount tire today for new one; I have road hazard warranty so just have to pay for prorated wear; I may think about going up one load range size since I have a single 5000lb rated axle on a heavy 20' 8" Grady white, 130HP Honda 4 Stroke; 82 gallon gas tank and lot of heavy gear; the tire that blew was tire that sits in the sun all day on my pad next to the garage; that may have helped age the tire faster; for my birthday last Wednesday my oldest son in Colorado is going to buy me tire covers including the spare; can't hurt.
  3. Well fished w/one of my mates on my 68th birthday; great day on the water; 2 for 3 in 87 to 90 FOW straight out and 3 miles north of pier heads; 9 lb king came on Capt John Kings Smurf 10" BTI flasher w/matching meat rig on 300' 30lb copper; 7lb Skamania came on spin doctor blue glo holophane flasher and blue fly on rigger 65 down; thermocline was 65 down where it was 49.7 degrees. Had rip on same flasher/fly on way in in 87FOW but no one home. On way home on I94 near Paw Paw blew a trailer tire at 65mph in left lane; managed to slow down quickly, got off and put on spare.
  4. Yep! I've seen 3 times flasher length on flasher packages! For small flashers like Spin Doctors, etc I use 22" which should be pretty close to 3X.
  5. 2 years ago our 20# mon got broke off along w/24# floro so ever since 30# mono leaders on riggers and copper and 35# Cortland Spectron Black Spot braid on dipseys and riggers. When you have to fish deep say greatrer than 100' you need to minimize sway back on riggers, thus braided line on riggers plus rigger steel cable was replaced as soon as I bought them w/.o24" diam steel wire from McMaster Carr. We'll be in Frankfort this Sun night and Mon am and Manistee Mon pm and Tues am. My 2 cents. Hockey Puck on THE REEL WOMAN;
  6. Was wondering same thing about report for GH; we are heading out Sat, if it doesn't rain w/backup Sunday; wind and waves are supposed to be good all the way until next Thursday.we Were out at South Haven yesterday; there was 54 to 60 degree water from 60 to 130FOW but no fish; we got skunked for 1st time this year. Perchers didn't do well either Sounds like South Haven buoy has been deployed; saw they had money in May but didn't think it would get deployed until next year.. I'll try and find the link. Thanks. Capt Dan Jackson
  7. Up until a few years ago I would almost always run two riggers and two dipseys; 2012 in Manistee that's all we ran and on 2 1 1/2 day trips got 14 kings and 25 kings. Now I add copper and high lines on boards for Steelies, etc.
  8. My middle son bought me copper two years ago; I usually run 300' of 30# and put it on a Cabelas DepthMaster DM45 reel that holds 330yds of #30; with backing and leader it just makes it on this reel. When you run it, it has to be all the way out; otherwise the copper will cut up your guides. You have to run it like lead core always watching for people who might cut your line. I use an in-line planer boat that I clamp down on the backing wiith so it won't release. When I get a fish on, we reel in to the board, take it off then crank all day on the 300' of copper, plus backing and leader. It was rough fishing up north at Mansitee last August due to north winds for quite a while; copper saved us by catching at least 1/2 of our fish. I use Silver Streak double orange crush and Moonshine magnum Happy Meal with pretty good success at the end of the copper.
  9. I just came back from Manistee Sunday night; and water was cold on surface and quite a ways down in 100FOW. Go to Capr John's web site "www.michigan-sportsman.com" and read today's report; the water temp off the shelf has warmed up and thermoclines are forming like they are supposed to. We went 10 for 13 all in 100FOW, except 1 king on Thursday night in harbor patrol. Best bait was magnum Mooshine Happy Meal on 30lb, 300' copper line (took 4 fish); same lure on rigger. Caught 1 on dipsey 150' out with Spin Doctor Blue Holagram/glow w/blue bubble fly; one on green/silver spoon on rigger; ojne on green/black ladder back J-pplug on dipsey 150' back; one on magnum Moonshine Blue Flounder on copper. go gettem.
  10. J-cubed welcome aboard; I'm a new member recently also. Saw your boat was a Grady White 208 Adventure; how do you like it? Looks like a great fishing boat. This is my dream boat when I win the lottery; great boats from what I hear, but even used ones are very expensive. Later. "Hockey Puck"
  11. Zurmmy: I fish out of St.Joseph, Michigan and coho fishing has been very good this year; in April/May most people got early limits in morning and went out deeper looking for kings; the mix a few weeks ago was lakers and coho with not that many kings caught; last Sunday we caught 5 lb coho, 8 lb skamania and 13lb king before we got blown off the lake at 11 am. I've had 4 or 5 trips to St. Joe this year and have caught cohos every trip. So cohos have been smalll, but very consistent.
  12. :grin:I live in Jackson, MI and work as an electrical engineer in Jackson; have two sons in Michigan and 1 in Colorado; also 3 grand kids in MI and 2 in CO. My son in Jackson keeps a 35' Silverton at Pier 1000 Marina in St. Joe just a few blocks south of DNR lauanch. I fish in Lake Michigan mainly out of St. Joe, but I do spend a few days in Manistee fishing off the shelf and make a few trips to Monroe to fish for eyes in Lake Erie. Missed Manistee last year due to all the nets; broke a streak of 28 years; nets are only south of piers this year so we are going up again this year in August. I fish out of a 2003 Northwood 17' aluminum boat (made by Smokercraft) with 40HP Honda 4 stroke that I love. My handle on the radio is "Hockey Puck"
  13. I live in Jackson, MI and am a retired elelctrical engineer from Commonealth Associates in Jackson.; fish in Lake Michigan mainly out of St. Joe port and a few times in South Haven. But, I do spend a few days each summer in Manistee fishing off the shelf in August.

    I do get out to lake Erie a few times to fish for eyes.

    Have three sons, 6 grand kids; 2 sons live in Jackson and Kalamazoo, other lives in Longmont, CO. Middle son in Jackson has a 35' Silverton that he keeps at St. Joe Pier 1000 Marina, just a few blocks south of DNR launch on St. Joe River.

    I fish out of a 21' Grady White Adventure 208 walk around w/cutty cab and 130 HP Honda 4 stroke.

    I play ice hockey two days a week all year round and spring, winter and fall I referee high school hockey, also.

    Not too surprising my handle on the ship to shore radio is "Hockey puck"on The Reel Woman.

  14. We were out on sunday from 7-11am; 3 for 3; steelie on MS Mag Flounder Pounder; small Coho on slider MS FP on same pole; 13lb king on dipsey @200' with white hoocie mama and white fly. Got blown off the lake around 11am; 3-5 footers came up quick. "Hockey Puck"
