Hey everyone,

I'd like to share something I’ve been working on for the last couple seasons.  I was trying to solve a couple of problems:

  1. How can I catch more fish on the lines near the boat (riggers and dipsys)?   (My kids aren't fans of the long copper lines.)
  2. How can I avoid spooking fish that get near the boat?

So, I started experimenting with ways to turn my cannonballs into something that actually attracts fish instead of pushing them away.  The result is the Magic Bait Ball — a rig that surrounds your cannonball with 18 spinner blades to create flash, thump, and vibration that mimics a tight, living school of baitfish.  The idea is your lure then trails tight behind it looking like an injured straggler that got separated from the group, leaving it isolated and vulnerable.  I’ve been running it with short leads (5–15 ft) and have seen a noticeable increase in downrigger and dipsy diver bites.

Here’s a short underwater video introducing it and showing how it looks in action:

And here’s the website with full details, setup instructions, and more videos: https://offshoreinnovations.net.  There is a lot of detail on the site, including explaining how and why it works, how to set it up, pro tips, and FAQs.  I'm not going to replicate that content here.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and questions on this.  Fire away guys.

Thanks, Jason
