  1. 2022 was the last king plant in Holland. I can't post screenshots here but I was the one who asked about Holland in the comment section when the planting increase was announced and Jay Wesley, the lake Michigan coordinator, replied saying they aren't planting Holland anymore. His excuse was that they plant so many walleye and musky in lake Mac they'd just eat the king smolts. When I asked him why they plant so many walleye there he went on to explain how they hold there and they prioritize native plants. That annoys me because last time I checked nobody flocks to our ports for walleye, but they will for kings. Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  2. Looks like I was 100 ft too deep today, we trolled 130-140 all morning and couldn't shake anything loose despite decent marks Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  3. In my years fishing Holland I've found that's the norm. I suspect it's because we don't have a big outflow like GH that concentrates bait because the spring kings are always a lot more scattered off Holland Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  4. We trolled from 6 to about 10 am from 100 to 170 ft, spending most of our time around 130. There seemed to be a fierce current out of the north on top of the waves. We got one 8# king on a blue mixed veggies magnum 55ft down on a downrigger in 135 ft. Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  5. We trolled south of Holland from 7 to about 11 am in 40 to 60 feet. We ended up 1 for 3 with a 5# king. The first two hits came around 45 feet and the last one came at 60. Here's what took the hits: 0-1 dipsey diver 85 ft back on #3 with a Moonshine rv blue flounder 0-1 dipsey diver 75 ft back on #3 with a mixed veggies spoon 1-1 5 color lead core with a salmon candy toasted wonder magnum Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  6. Thanks for the report. We trolled out of Holland from 80 to about 140 and despite some promising marks out deep we couldn't shake anything loose Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  7. I've been screaming from the mountain top that Ludington shouldn't be getting planted. They're almost ten years removed from a plant and their natural run is bigger than any planted run yet I see they wanna put 100,000+ in the big sable every year instead of further south where they're needed. 8. There's a decent population but they're super hard to catch. Aside from fall and spring when they feed in the harbor they're pretty lethargic. My dad and I see tons of guys slow trolling the drop offs in the summer and they few guys I hear from say you'll pick some up but you'll also be dealing with catfish and sheephead left and right Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  9. The reason I heard was because they planted so many walleye and musky they determined they'd just eat through most of the smolts before they make it to the lake. I try not to dump on our DNR but if that's the case then they effectively ruined a great local fishery Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  10. A buddy and I trolled it two Sundays ago during overcast and a hard NE and got nothing. In my experience most of our kings show up after three years so with us only getting a plant on even years the even years are relatively dead. I did really good on late summer mature kings straight out from Holland in 2017, 2019 and last year before the tropical heat screwed it up but 2018, 2020, and this year were dead for me. 11. NOAA has been letting me down all season. It used to be my most reliable forecast but I've had several trips this season where 1-2 footers have magically turned into 3+ when I get out there Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  12. I like it and don't like it at the same time. I'm glad we're getting a bump but by the sounds of it they're all going up north and it's the southern ports that need it the most. Jay Wesley also said when I asked him about the southern ports that they're no longer planting Holland moving forward due to predation from walleye and musky plants. 13. Oh I know a thing or two about the snags in there. From 2008 to about 2013 when my dad and I trolled it more we donated basically a tackle box worth to the channel monster [emoji23] Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  14. Awesome to see Holland get a good harbor run, that brings me back to my childhood in the 2000's hay day. Can I ask how long of leaders you run on your downriggers in that close? I've been meaning to get back into channel trolling and I've heard some people say I need mile long leaders to get away from the boat and some say I need short leaders to prevent tangles Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  15. We only got one this morning, with the big red classic this coming weekend guys are gonna be pretty tight lipped Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  16. I highly doubt the DNR is gonna go after anyone for keeping a foul hooked salmon way out on lake Michigan. If you were out there trolling the fish clearly went after it and you just got a really unfortunate hookup. The DNR is more interested in people intentionally snagging in channels and rivers where fish stack up and you can basically shoot fish in a barrel. 17. Good to see some brood stock show up. After last year I was a little nervous about this year's turnout Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  18. Maybe it's just me but it seems like the pier runs have really just fizzled out in recent years. When I was a kid in the 2000's every port it seemed would get a week or so window where they would hang out in front of the piers and in the channels but now even on good runs they seem to go from deep straight to the headwaters or rivers. 19. We went out of Holland this morning and for the second straight trip got skunked. We saw some enticing marks in 125 ft right off the bat but no hits and when we turned back they were gone. The water was 44 degrees 60 ft down so I can't blame the water for being piss warm this time. The DNR planting data shows some got planted in both Holland and Saugatuck in 2018 so I keep expecting them to come back but it looks like they either vacated north or are doing a great job at avoiding us. With our dock coming out next weekend and my dad and I both getting busy after that this is probably the end of my trolling season, bummer it had to go out with a whimper but it also looks like just about everyone on the southern end of the lake is struggling. 21. We trolled from 6 to 11:30 and ended up 2 for 4 with a 2# laker and a 4# coho. We had two hits in 115 fow and, one in 190 fow, and the laker was just dangling there when I reeled in a line to check it. Here's what took the hits 1 - spotted dick meat rig behind a mixed veggies spindoctor on 300 copper 1 - Michigan stinger uv naked Jordo on 150 copper 1- Ito green and black meat rig behind an Ito angry alewife paddle on a downrigger 90 ft down 1 - Ito green and black meat rig behind an Ito angry alewife paddle while reeling in (like right behind the boat) Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  22. We trolled from 6 to 11 am from 150 to 180 ft, ended up 1 for 2 with a 14# king, finally snapping my dad's godawful dry spell, both hits in 170 fow. Here's what took the hits: 1-1 moonshine magnum rv blue flounder on 350 copper 0-1 fake news meat rig behind chartreuse atommik magnum paddle on a downrigger 100 ft down Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  23. Based on the PS buoy it looks like we've got a little bit of one setting up around 65 ft Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  24. June and July are always by far my worst months, pretty soon the lakers should start stacking up in their usual 120 zone which can be a good hold over till the kings start staging Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
  25. I've been out four times this season out of Holland and have marked zero bait fish. Meat rigs have accounted for every one of my kings which usually never happens to me in May
