  1. Grand Haven is 30 min north and would have lots more boats and a couple of show rooms in the Spring Lake area along M104. Could also drive south to the first Saugatuck exit on US31 to Lakeshore Outfitters to fondle tackle. One of the nicest and most complete tackle shops on the lake.
  2. I have always preferred Big Jon over Cannon... mainly due to the better, more adjustable rod holders, tilt up arms, and less bulky. If you like Cannons though, stay with them. You can always add the Traxstech dual rod holders to the Cannons and have the best rod holders available. Traxstech rod holders for Cannon (CANRH2):
  3. It is an Android app. Don't know if there is a iPhone version available. Another option is TapaTalk that does have both Android & iPhone versions. In fact the GLF Android app looks like a customized version of TapaTalk that bypasses the TapaTalk front-end.
  4. It did that to me at first too but I had a poor data connection. 3G seems to be too slow. 4G & WiFi works fine Sent from my SCH-I535 using Great Lakes Fisherman mobile app
  5. I would run them just as gmfishon says unless you are trying to make the outside diver get deeper with less line out. For maximum depth put the mag diver on 1 and run it as the inside diver.
  6. From July through the run I use a lot of plugs (mainly Ace High) off copper but also run flashers & flies. 8" Spom Doctors and Bechold FishCatchers in Double Crush Glow with a BW Poofster glow or Homosezwhat fly 8" Spom Doctor in Blue or Green Dot glow with flies in blue or green respectively. UV colors have been good the last two years too Earlier in the year it is mainly spoons off copper for me.
  7. Lots of the fish caught off Holland in the last week have been up high -- top 25' of the water column out in 170 to 250 feet of water. Many of those have been on short leadcores -- 2 or 3 colors (20 & 30 feet). These short cores can be put on most reels used for downriggers by taking off 50 yards of mono and splicing in the core. These have been especially good for Steelhead with trolling speeds of around 3 mph.
  8. It is illegal to buy or sell fish caught in Michigan. The form of payment, whether it is for money or other forms of payment should not matter. Alaska may be different and it does not sound like the fish were caught under a sport fishing license either in the example cited. From the Michigan Fishing Guide:
  9. Can you clarify what the problem is? "... my connection on my cable and spring module..." has lots of [pssible solutions. The brand/model of downrigger might help too.
  10. I also think it is illegal to barter/trade game fish for whatever. But, I'm not sure how anyone would ever prove where the salmon came from considering I can go down to Meijer or Sam's Club and buy all the salmon I want from the fresh fish cooler. In the past I have brought lots of bags of fresh filleted salmon to work after a good trip. Never had a problem giving it away with no expectations of receiving anythning for it. Now that's not to say that others who happened to get the fish would bring me fresh veggies or a pie or... at other times too. That I have taken smoked salmon to my barber and auto mechanic I'm sure hasn't hurt either.
  11. Works fine on my Galaxy SIII Android (v 4.3) on Chrome. Have you tried clearing the browser cache?
  12. DD call Mathew at Torpedo. Has always been very good to try to resolve issues. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Great Lakes Fisherman mobile app
  13. Joe, you were not the only one not catching many off Holland/Port Sheldon yesterday. We got a little bit of a late start but fished from 8 am to 4 pm. Ended up with 1 coho and 1 steelhead in the box. Also got another small 2 lb steelhead and 3 shaker Kings that were released. Fished from 140 out to 240. The Coho was on a 300 copper with a UV mixed veggie Stinger in 185 FOW. Had a nice scum line in 240-260 and had fish boiling all over. Caught the 2 Steelhead on a3 color core out in this area on a red/black Thin Fin. Surface water temps varied from 64 down to 49. Water was 40* down 25' per the FishHawk at all water depths. Marks in the top 70' were far and few between for us. Did mark a lot of fish down 120 to 160'. Water was 36 to 39* down there. My crew figured they were lake trout and they love lake trout so did send a couple of riggers down but no takers. The marks were big arches but not that strong of a return so I wasn't so sure it was even fish. Not a bad shakedown trip though. The new FishHawk X4 probe didn't want to work for the first 5 or 6 hours -- not a clue why as it had brand new Duracells in it. Just started working when I changed lures for the 3rd or 4th time. Weird! Felt like I was fishing blind -- you don't know how much you rely on stuff until it doesn't work.Found that I left one 3 color, two half cores, and my PP diver rods sitting at home. Pic of me wuth the Coho below.
  14. Those nets are state licensed -- not Native American. Jim Vander Maas told me that the permit is issued to a gentleman named Petersen. Also from Jim: LRB Tribal waters run from Arcadia south to about Stoney Lake then the Stoney Lake to Grand Haven area is called the Southern Lake Michigan Development Zone which is open to all Tribes by permit from Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority (CORA.)
  15. The LRB licensed Thomas Battice to set and run the nets. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison when convicted of criminal sexual conduct in the fall of 2013 (http://m.shorelinemedia.net/ludington_daily_news/archives/article_09c9d1b3-f5d4-51fc-9472-975491751e74.html?mode=jqm). Prior to being sentenced he was in custody and consequently didn't service the nets set from Whitehall to Big Sable Pointe in 2012-2013. They stayed in the water over both winters as a result. This article from the Ludington newspaper has lots of good info on the process the LRB had to do to take control of the nets to be able to remove and dispose of them. http://m.shorelinemedia.net/ludington_daily_news/archives/article_388983b5-b21b-5073-8469-93f8f810fcb0.html?mode=jqm
  16. I inquired about the net situation with Jim Vander Maas early this week. Jim is representing the Michigan Steelheaders in regards to nets in the Great Lakes and has been working with the DNR and the LRB on the net situation from Big Sable Point to off Whitehall. Jim informs me that a net removal crew was hired by the LRB to remove all of the nets from that area of the lake and the removal tug arrived in Whitehall on Wednesday (5/28). This includes the loose/drifting nets and any that were still moored. Here is the exact email I got from Jim and he authorized me to post it on the GLF and GLA forums: Further Jim proved the following info on reporting if a sportfishing boat encounters a net:
  17. I use the Great Lakes Fisherman app on my Android. It doesn't have all the features of the web page but is pretty good. TapaTalk also works with the GLF forums. I just tried the home GLF webpage in Chrome on my Galaxy SIII (Verizon) and it loaded fine. IMO the app or TapaTalk make it a lot easier to navigate though due to the screen size.
  18. How old is the 9v battery in the probe? Even with alkalines I usually had to replace it every 2-3 days of use. When it gets low you get intermittent/weird readings.
  19. I'm finally getting the boat wet for the first time on Saturday out of Holland as well. Changed the engine and lower unit oil in both Honda outboards yesterday. Finishing cleaning today and then getting the tackle onboard. With the WMFL fishing league having an event out of the DNR ramp Saturday morning (6 am - noon), we are planning to launch between 6 and 7 am to avoid the rush. The launch ramp could be a little busy . Hopefully the fish cleaning station will also be busy but cleared out when we get in later. Give me a call on the VHF and I'll share what we find works and where!
  20. I discussed this with Mathew Sawyre at Torpedo Diver a couple years ago when he brought out the antenna and cablr. The Torpedo antenna is not required for the Torpedo cable on the Depth Raider or Sub Troll.
  21. The weather looks like it will be stable through the weekend. Planning on towing over in Saturday. Hopefully the fish stick around. Thanks for the post! Had pretty much narrowed it to either Holland or Muskegon, but with the good ramp and great fish cleaning facility... your post pushed it to the top!
  22. For I/O the weight includes the engine & outdrive. For outboards it deoends on the brand. For Starcraft it looks like they do.
