  1. Looks like the boy could teach his old man how to catch some green fish
  2. Nice job Joe. Funny thing is I've been running green plugs all year and have yet to take a hit on them, but it seems to be the best color for everyone else
  3. Thanks for giving your input Jay, I was sort of hoping you would chime in. I know it was not lamprey damage because I have seen fish with lamprey scars before but nothing like this. It did sort of look like something was "burrowing" through the flesh so my initial thought was some sort of worm or something.
  4. Pictures I should note that the guy with the glasses is from Slovakia (here learning about our machines) and has never been fishing before. Getting him hooked into a 15lb king on the 300 copper taught him quick what fishing is about Oh and one more thing, we ran the probe down first thing in the morning in 120 FOW and the water temp went from 71degrees 100 feet down down to 52 degrees on the bottom.
  5. So one of the fish I caught last night had something really weird going on with it. When we first pulled it into the boat I noticed that it had a round hole right in the top of its head. The hole was probably a quarter inch deep and healed over. What was weirder was later when I was filleting it out it had some very nasty puss filled abscesses in the meat. There were two, one right below the dorsal fin and one farther back by the lateral line. Each was about the size of a small egg. Other than the hole in the head there were no other marks on the outside of the fish. I've never seen this before and looking back I probably should have taken some pictures, and maybe thrown it in the head freezer for the DNR to take a look at. I didn't try to take any of the meat.
  6. Fished both morning and evening. Morning, set up in 120 FOW just south of PS on a SW troll. Didn't hit a fish until 140 FOW Trolled south to the sliders and turned around north after heading out to 170 FOW. Pulled lines at 11:30 with 6 fish in the box, 5 kings and 1 coho, with only one more than 10lbs. Had 10 hits I think What worked: 1.8 SOG on south troll, 3.3 SOG on a north troll (insane currents down there) 140-170 FOW Chrome/Blue Spindoctors with Blue Dolphin BLL teaser rigs on rigger at 130 down on the rigger (HOT) and on the 250 #32 copper Big white paddle and poofster fly on wire diver 240 back Everything else - DEAD In the evening headed set lines around 6:00 in 170 FOW heading west. Started hitting fish when we got to 200. Worked 200 to 220 until the fish there turned off. Moved in to 160 as the sun set and started taking hits again. Ended 5 for 10 or so all kings with all but one being over 12lbs. What worked: Random speeds 200-220 FOW and 160-140 FOW Blue/Chrome Spinnies and teaser rigs 120 and 140 down on the riggers Chrome/Mtn Dew Spinnies and Irritated frog flies on the 300 copper and 240 back on the wire diver Stinger Mixed Veggies on the 5 color after dark. I'll post some pictures later
  7. I found a Wohali rain jacket at Gander Mountain this spring that was on sale for $75. It's non-insulated but I wear it with a couple of sweaters and wore it all spring brown fishing. Very wind/rain proof. The only issue I had with it was one of the velcro pieces started coming loose but all of the other ones seam very sturdy still.
  8. Nice video Ken, the onlything that would have made it better is some sound
  9. Apparently I need to read more carefully, thanks for pointing that out.
  10. Looks like it's time to break out the greaser gear And Gordon, you should note that the article says that the alwives and smelt are sold as "by-catch", meaning they are not the target species, they just happen to get caught. On a side not, I found it interesting who has made the only comment on the original site.
  11. Around Holland the there have been only a few fleas, only a little bit on mono lines. The flies have been hit or miss. There were none saturday morning, but when we went out at night there were enough to be annoying.
  12. Got to fish both AM and PM today. This morning got out there just before the start of the Big Red Classic which made it a zoo. Set up in 85 FOW 3/4 of the way to Portsheldon heading South. Went south till we passed the sliders and then turn around. Eventually worked our way out to 150 FOW but 110 was best early, 140 was better later. Ended 8 for 11, all kings with the biggest at 15.5lbs. What worked in the morning: 2.4 SOG south, 3.1 North White/fishscale 11" paddle with BW poofster 180 back on wire diver - hot White/Mtn Dew 11" paddle with Big Lake Lures poofster 60 down on rigger UV 11" paddle with BW Homosezwhat fly 115 down on rigger Firecracker 75 down on rigger Glow crab on 250 copper small wonderbread j-plug on 10 color Went out tonight planning on a short trip knowing that storms were coming across the lake. Set lines just before 6:00 and pulled them at 7:15 when the lighting got too close for comfort. worked between 115 and 122 FOW. Managed to go 5 for 8 with the last one coming as we were pulling lines. What worked: 2.7 SOG south and north white/fishscale 11" paddle with BW poofster fly 180 back on wire diver glow/dark green 8" paddle with a UV green fly 115 down on rigger BLL green frog down 107 on rigger BLL Green Kato freeslider on rigger at 107 Glow Crab on 250 copper Blue sparkle glow Ace Hi plug on 10 color
  13. Last year when we were fishing the channel in Holland my normal spread was 2 riggers, 2 divers (regulars on 3), 1 2 color lead, 1 flat line with a body bait. Holland does not get as crowded as some of the other ports so I had some room to run a spread like this. I don't think I would try to run 4 dipsys in the channel. when you are only fishing in 25-15 FOW the different settings aren't doing much to spread the lines out. Honestly, you will probably catch just as many fish and not make to many enemies running a 4 rod spread.
  14. Went out with a bunch of friends last night. Hit the water around 6:00 with waves less than a foot, a nice change from what it has been the last couple of trips. Set up in 120 FOW north of Holland heading SW. Made it all the way out to 170 before turning back in. Marked a ton of bait and fish but not a lot going. Pulled lines at 10:00 with 4 in the box, 2 nice kings and 2 small coho. Had a lot of knock offs on the deep rigger with 11" paddle with no one home. What worked: Mag Blue Dolphin on 300' copper 11" Mtn Dew paddle with Blue water flies poofster and UV yellow beads on wire diver 200' out 11" white/fishscale paddle with poofster and white/blue beads on wire diver 250' out 11" UV/glow paddle with BW irritated frog released about 4 times on the rigger 115 down, pretty sure it was fish because I had the release cranked down Nice to get out with a few out-of-staters and let them reel in bigger fish than what they are used to.
  15. Fished Holland for the Dreamweaver B4K tournament yesterday morning. I was joined by Roger and his wife and their friend Tony. It was a rough morning out on the lake with lots of 3's and 4's. Set up around 5:15 in 85 FOW going NNW. Worked mostly 100 to 150 FOW all morning north of Holland with 135 being the best. East and West trolls seemed to be more productive for us but we caught fish going every direction. Ended up pulling lines at 10:30 having gone 10 for 20ish. Almost every lure from the package got a hit. What was working: Double orange crush Super Slim on 7 color Starburst Super Slim on 10 color Glow Crab on 300' copper - Hot Monkeyshine on 250' copper Halo Lemon Ice on wire diver 100 back - Hot white/blue bubble SD w/ bleeding blue bubble fly 120 back on wire diver green/white crush glow SD with green crinkle/glow fly 115 down on rigger green dolphin free slider on rigger at 75 Monkeyshine free slider on rigger at 75 Lost a lot of nice fish and got lucky on a bunch. Fish in Holland seemed to be swiping at it yesterday. Not sure how we placed in the tournament, there were a lot of boats right around us with 60-70lb 5 fish coolers. Great fun tournament for charity and I will defiantly be fishing it again next year.
  16. Well after a while off real fishing, got out for a short and not so sweet trip tonight. Went 2 for 3 in 10 minutes before pulling lines and running in after a storm front past us. Fished 120 FOW on a SW troll. Hits came on 11" paddles with green and white flies on riggers at 120, 100, and low diver at 250. Hope to be back out tomorrow night and Saturday to really put the hurt on em.
  17. Awesome, we needed a bouy in Holland. Thanks for your work Ed.
