  1. I have tried plugs many times with no luck. Any input on how to be more succesfull with them? I run them on dipseys. I think I will try one on a lead core next time out.
  2. I can also say the double orange crush spoon did very well for me last year with 10 or 5 color also blue dolphin worked well.Troll fast!!!! 4-5 m.p.h. My best day for steelhead was in November of last year. Had 6 in the boat in 2 hours all over 10lbs. I think it had to do with all the boat traffic out there in November!!
  3. I plan to hit the big pond the first weekend in April with weather permiting. I have never fished the pond this early before. First of all do you think there will be any fish in the area of Grand Haven? Or will they still be south looking for warmer water? Second would you mostly use spoons or body baits or even flasher fly combos? Any input would be nice thanks.
  4. Great people here. You will like it!
  5. Hated that movie, but willing to give this a try. Can't see how you could run more than one on a side when you have no idea where it is, but I like the idea of reeling in maybe 150 ft of mono instead of 300 feet of lead core! I never have run more than one board on a side anyway. I could run two of theses with two diver's set at 2 and two poles out the back with torpedo divers. For a 6 rod spread. Sounds like a great spread to me. I am not of big fan of copper or lead core. I don't like the "fight" with the fish with either it just feels like dead weight with copper and lead core.
  6. I had a feeling GLF you were going to say something like that. You get a grab bag after the seminar? I might do it then.
  7. I am going to the Ultimate Sport Show in Grand Rapids the 20th and they are having a Super Salmon & Steelhead Clinic 12:30 - 02:30 PM by Best Chance Promotions Stage E & F Captains Dave Engle and Bill Bale will be on hand for a one time only special appearance for this must see presentation! ($25 Fee) The problem is I am going with my girlfriend so it would be $50 for the 2 of us. Do you guys think this will be worth the money? I can't imagine learning much more than what I have learned alone form this website. So happy I found this website. You guys have been a lot of help. I will become a supporting member soon. I just missed 2 weeks of work and have hospital bills to pay first.
  8. Great thread guys. I wish I read this last year before I bought all my dipsey's last year. Everything said about the dipsey divers is all true. I am so tired of fighting with the O rings to stay on. I have one question whats your favorite color or pattern to use? My favorite color for dipsey was green it caught more fish by far than the red or yellow ones. Also Walker makes 5 different sizes what size are you guys using. I am guessing size 107? Here is a link for all the patterns available http://www.walkerdownriggers.com/deeper_diver.html I think the mettallic green would be the first one I purchase.
  9. As you can see by the posts' just about any spoon that has some orange in it in the top 50 foot of water should give you good results. I purchased my church boards in September with my lead core. I rigged my my 10 core with a double orange crush. I rigged my 5 core with a blue dolphin and both produced a lot of bites. I lost more than I got in the boat. I forget to slow the troll down I am sure that would help. Those fish will do anything to throw the lure. Some of them got some air! Troll very fast nothing under 3 mph. I even caught 2 going over 5 mph, when I was just trying to get the boat back to the harbor in 6 foot waves. That is a experience I don't want to repeat. I think the slowest I am going to troll this year is 2.8 and faster. When I target any fish out there. Cover more water and then your more likely to find that aggressive fish. Thats what the captain also said at your salmon fishing seminar. I will be at the swap. I hope to meet some of you guys in person. This is a very friendly informative web site I have learned a lot. Thanks again!
  10. This video was on the news tonight. They estimated the fish to be 30 years old.
  11. Thanks for the info guys. I assume your not suppose to clip the board on to the copper just like your not suppose to with lead core. Will the board clip damage the copper too?
  12. I want to upgrade to wire and copper this year. I don't want the hassle of looking for rods and reels and then buying the wire and the copper. So I found a store near me that sells combo's with rod and reel and already spooled with copper and wire and backing. Are these decent for the price? How much cheaper could I do it myself? I am just a weekender fisherman trying to have some fun fishing. I don't need to have the "great" gear, but I don't want to get ripped off either. The price seems to be fair. Any input would be greatly appreciated thanks. Okuma wire line combo with line 8 1/2 ft $159.99 Package includes Okuma 8 1/2 ft roller rod BD TR 862 MH Okuma Convector 30D counter reel 75 yd 30# dacron backer 600ft Mason 30# wire line Okuma Copper combo with line 9 ft $149.99 Package includes Okuma 9 ft rod CPM 90M Okuma Convector 55L reel 150 yds 25# Berkley Big Game backing 300 ft Howie's 45# copper line 30ft 20# Berkley Big Game leader
  13. I hope to see you there Jimmy I will be buying a few of these from you also!
  14. Thanks for making this thread. I have never seen one of these before. I will be adding 1 or 2 to my tackle box for sure. I found a video on you tube that I think would be very helpful for all of you who do use them. He's a charter captian who rigs them differently than they are packaged.
  15. I am so glad this thread was started. I would really like to use wire line but will settle with braided line this summer. I was looking at power pro line today and it is only sold in 150 yards at Wallmart. Do you guys use more than 150 yards or do you always use a mono backer? Should I use 20lb or 30lb? What knot do you use to tie the two lines together? Also do you use pro line from the diver to the spoon or do you use something else? Thanks for the help.
  16. They do make anti-fog sprays that do work. Also here is a home-made version. You can make an inexpensive anti-fog glass spray to keep your bathroom mirrors and the inside of your car's windshield or boats fog-free. This solution keeps condensation from collecting on these surfaces. Pour 2 ounces of vinegar into 1 quart of hot water. Dip a clean, lint-free cloth into mixture. Lightly wring out cloth. Wipe mirrors and the inside of car windshields with cloth. Allow to dry.
  17. I also just started salmon fishing this year. The best way to put more fish in your boat is to run 2 boards and and 2 dipseys and 2 down riggers every trip out. With 2 people of course. Read the book Keating on Kings. It helped me out a lot. My local library actually has this book. They make a lot of spoons but only a handfull catch fish. Watch the reports on here and see what people are using. If i could afford the auto pilot that would be my choice. It would make fishing a lot less work and more fun.
  18. LOL They were extremly fat! Kings were full of small alewives. The coho were full of bugs. I guess they are getting fat for winter.
  19. Here the picture of my favorite spoon. Its made by dream weaver. I saw a video on youtube of some guys fishing lake michigan and using this spoon and they caught a lot of fish with it. So I bought one. This spoon is catching 70% of the fish I put in the boat. I gave up on dodger and flies I only caught one fish all year on that combo. Hers pic of that spoon.
  20. Ok thats a a great idea for a new thread. I would like to run meat rigs next year but I have no idea how. Can you start a new thread and talk about how you rig them?
  21. Started out at at 120 fow at 8:30 we went 7 for 12. We fished for 3 1/2 hours and the bite died at noon fished for another hour nothing! Here what worked. I feel bad for all you guys who have put your boats in storage. blue dophin on 5 color 1 fish 1 hit Double orange crush 10 color 1 hit 0 fish Natural Born Killer on dipsey 1 setting 180 feet back 5 hits 3 fish Silver belly with green glow 1 setting 240 feet back 5 hits 3 fish this spoon is quickly becoming my favorite spoon! anybody use this one? Here is a picture 2 kings and 5 coho!
  22. Just read local newspaper today. A new world record brown trout was caught in Racine Wisconsin July 16th. It weighed a whopping 41 pounds 8 ounces.
  23. I wish I could join you guys, but I am on the east side
  24. Thanks for the replys. I guess this is not a secret weapon rig anymore!
  25. I have never caught a brown trout and would really like to catch my first one next spring (they are the best looking fish in the big pond). Can you guys give me some pointers on how to do this? Lure selection? Depth? Speed? Location?
