  1. Thanks for the info, guys. The cisco systems might be better fitted to what I am looking for. It'll be another month before I need something. Been perching and gill fishing for a couple of weeks loading up the freezer while the salmon are in their June swoon. Maybe we'll get a strong east wind and change the lake set up some. Hoping! Duane
  2. I looked at the lexan rod holder by Berts Custom tackle today. I have two of the steel one but am looking for two more holders. These, at Gander Mountain, looked and felt real solid and they were asking $50 vs $79 for the steel ones. Berts web site sells the plastic ones for $40 vs $70 for the steel model. Anyone had any experience with the lexan models? Always looking to save a buck or two, but not at the expense of losing a rod, dipsy and all the rest that would go. Any input would be appreciated. And, I am not entirely satisfied with the steel ones that I have. If a rookie is driving and makes a turn a bit to short they sometimes ratchet to the up position. A pain. Thanks, Duane
  3. I've put many hours on this engine. About 4 years ago I had to have the flywheel replaced because the gear teeth were stripped out in 3 places, equi-distant around the circumference of the fly wheel. Also had the bendix gear replaced at that time. Yesterday I took a look at the flywheel and bendix again. Bendix gear is badly worn and the flywheel is showing signs of wear in the same three spots. Questions: 1. How do I remove the bendix gear? Looks simple but it turns out not to be that easy for me. Turning the nut on shaft end only moves the gear into mesh position with the flywheel. How can I hold the starter shaft so I can loosen the bendix retaining nut? 2. Can I move the flywheel into a different position so the bendix will not be making contact in the same places it has been? l am not sure if the flywheel position has anything to do with engine timing any more. Any help would be appreciated. $85 a hour for shop labor in this day and age is more than I really want to pay. Thanks, Duane
  4. We fished about the same area. Lucked out and set right down on them at first. Caught 20 in about 30 minutes with three of us fishing. These were decent fish in the 10-11" range. Then the fish moved or we did and things really slowed up. Ended up with 49 but the last 29 were all in the 8-9" range. My son and his wife were going to clean them and they wanted fish so they kept 'em Fished from 2 PM till 5:40 PM. Great day on the lake!
  5. Sounds like some pretty good action, even if the size wasn't what you were looking for. Way to go! How far out, in miles is 320' out of Muskegon? Duane
  6. Hey Jason, thanks for the info. I usually run 8 lines and not to much trouble. I really like your advice on practice, practice! I intend to follow that! Most years I fish 120 times, with about a third of that on the great lakes somewhere. Maybe I'll have to increase that? Fortunately my wife is pretty understanding. Duane
  7. Thanks for the info, everyone. I know that soon I'll be pulling the half core and start using my dipsys. I guess running the full core further from the boat is a start and maybe the dipsy on 2 rather than 3 will be my starting set up on each side. Duane
  8. Anyone have a real good idea as to how far out from the boat a 4 1/4" dipsy set on 3 with 30 braid runs out from the boat? I guess what I am really asking is, can I run a full core on a board with a 100' of line from rod tip to board and a dipsy back 200' on 3 is there a major chance of tangling them up if a fish hits ether one? Duane
  9. Nice job Mike and crew, especially the up and coming fishermen! Any one that has fished the great lakes very long has had the experience of knocking at least one fish off with the net. It happens even to us old timers! Keep it up guys! Duane
  10. Great job Terry! I have a tough time keeping 9 rods untangeled in decent conditions. Duane
  11. Set lines at 75 FOW straight out. Trolled out to 105 and picked up first fish. Ended up 10 for 15 or so. Biggest was 14.1#. Several others just a bit smaller. Had 2 coho. Ran riggers from 25 to 60 down. Carmel dolphin mag at 60 down picked up 3. Blue Holo ProKing mag at 35 down picked up two coho. All riggers caught at least one, Other fish came on half core and full core. Glow spoons mags on cores and 2 other riggers. Lost one half core that a king off the rigger got tangled in. Had a triple on, landed two, the other broke off the leader on a half core. Rained the first hour and then got to be real nice day to fish. Back out possibly Tuesday, Thursday for sure weather permitting. Went 6 for 6 out of Saugatuck on Monday, basically the same kind of set ups with one king at 15.2# Been the best spring king fishing I've seen in years! Hope it keeps up. Duane
  12. Hey Kevin, you guys had a great weeks fishing! Many would be glad to boat that many in a season. If I see you guys out there again I'll be talking to you to find out whats working! Way to go! Duane
  13. Sounds like a successful trip even with the battery problem! Way to go. Duane
  14. Set up this AM in 50 FOW about a mile noth of piers to get away from the big pack of boats in the general area of the piers. 4 riggers from 12' to 45' down, the deepest ones with free sliders on. 2 dipsys on 3 and 1 1/2 back 140 and 100. One half core, one full core. Trolled slightly NW and when we got to 65 FOW started to mark some fish and lots of bait near or on bottom. Adjusted everthing to run a bit deeper. Had a couple of releases on one rigger that was set at 65'. Finally caught a laker on that rigger but it came on the free slider. Had a couple of rips on the half core. Caught a 14# king off the full core with a ivory/red spot magnum spoon. Caught another king off the other rigger at 60' with a free slider, fish coming on the slider. Had the other two riggers running at 25 and 35'. Never took a hit on those. Had one rip on a dipsy with Spin/Doc/fly. Finally pulled both dipsys and put out another full core and a half core. Took a twin to the first 14# king on the same rig. I think we went 4 or 7 or 8. Boats that stayed in the 50' range seemed to do better. Came home with fish in the box and a tired crew. Nice day even if we did not kill 'em. Fog came on about 10 AM thick as pea soup! Duane
  15. Great job Terry, and thanks for the report with some good info. We'll be out there Monday AM. Duane
  16. The good reports from NB forced me to give it a shot today, rain or not. Raining when we left Otsego at 5:30 AM. Quit by time we got to NB. Set up in 20 FOW just outside of Pierheads. 4 lines on big boards, 4 d/r. Alewives all over the river pool. Jumping right into the motor well! Fished 20-35 FOW in the river water at 46 degrees. Not a bump except two alewives on Pro King spoons. Moved out fishing to 57 FOW where we picked up our first fish at 10:30. Worked that area until 3 PM. Ended up 16 for 25. Had a tough time keeping 'em on with the nasty cross chop and some mistakes we made. Had our three man limit plus one 13-14# laker which went back in the lake, and did not survive. What a waste. Tried our best to keep it in the water and unhook it there but we finally had to net it. 11 fish off d/r 7', 12', 22' and 25' down. Plus the laker at 45' down. Moved this up to 25' to help keep us away from anymore lakers. Orange crush ProKing regular size took 2, ProKing Dirty Harry Mag took 2 fish, rest came on thinfish tiger red and thinfish Gold/Orange. Fish off boards back 100', two came on thinfish tiger red and two on Rapala pink and white with a feathered back hook. What ever that is has worked pretty well for us this spring. Tough fishing today but a nice box. Water temp out of river water was 42. Duane
  17. We must have been fishing the same general area. We started in 12-15 FOW near the farms trolling south. Nothing doing. Finally started working out somewhere near the Chalets still going on a SW course. Ran into some fish about 60 FOW. Stayed in the general area for about a hour and half. Took four coho and missed 3 others. 1 came off flat line 100 back from big boards with a thinfin tiger/red, 1 came off d/r down 10' with a ProKing magnum orange crush, 1 came off rigger down 12' with a ProKin magnum blue/red ladderback, 1 came off rigger down 14' with a orange back/gold thinfin. Then made the mistake of trolling north out of that area to make the run a bit shorter to the pier. Never leave fish to find fish! Not a tap all the way back to in front of the pierheads. Stayed in 55-60 FOW all the way back. Heard on the radio some did pretty well in 65-80 FOW straight out from piers. Great fishing day, the catching wasn't so good. Beats working around the house and yard. Sounds like I'll have time for that in the next few days with the weather turning a bit rough out there for me. Duane
  18. Great pics, sounds like a great day! Way to go. What depth were you fishing most of the time, Terry? Thanks for the report. Duane
  19. At the urging of a grandson in Racine went over to fish a few days. My son Matt went with me. Only a few boats fishing and those were in the harbor and around the river mouth. I decided to try Bender Park the first day. It is just north of a power plant. One boat fishing near the wall there but all they had were small browns. We went a bit south and fished off a reef going out from the Wind Point Lighthouse. Went 7 for 11 with one of the fish being a 13# King. Also took a small coho. The other 5 were browns up to 11#. Next morning we launched at Racine and made the run back up to Wind Point. Went 14 for 20. Two lakers of about 7# (legal in Wi) and 12 Browns with the biggest at 13.8#. Most ran from 6 to 10#. Ran 4 riggers with spoons which took the King and a few of the browns. Most fish came off the big boards with the lines back 100' with reef runners and husky jerks. Lost some gear to snags going over the reef, had a few chinese fire drills with a relatively inexperienced crew but a great trip. Great facilities at the ramps in both Racine and Bender Park. Super weather. And not a fishing boat in sight! Will be an annual trip for us!
  20. Had 4 riggers and 4 lines behind the big boards set at 9AM about a mile north of junk cars. Running a variety of tadpollys and thinfins. Mostly red but some orange. Tolled south for a hour and 15 minutes and had 8 coho in the box and missed 3-4 others. Turned and trolled back toward the piers and by 11:30 had our other 7 while missing 3-4 more. Never had more than 10 minutes without some kind of action. Riggers at 8' took about the same amount of fish as the lines behind the boards. Lures behind the riggers were 35-40' back and those behind the boards were 75' back on one side and 100' back on the other. DNR man at the ramp tried to count our fish in the box and finally said, yeah that looks like about 15! And it really was. Also caught a fish that came up with a another lure in its mouth, and attached to that lure was a line with a rod and reel! I'm more than glad to give it to whoever lost it. Identify the reel, rod and lure it is yours if you come and pick it up. Cold, windy mother out there. Especially since you could not keep your gloves on because of the constant action. Fortunately the wind was dead out of the east and we never got out more than 20 FOW. Most action came between 12 and 20'. Great day no matter what the chill factor was. Duane
  21. Had 9 lines set at 9:15. Started at pump house trolling south in about 15 FOW. Got to the junk cars without a tap. Many boats out. We didn't see a net in the water for the first hour. Pulled everything up ran down to the chalets. Fished that area for about an hour without a hit. Even got out to 40 FOW. Marked a few fish, but no action. Trolled back into the chalet area, the same spot we had no action before gave up 5 for 8 in about an hour and a half. All fish came on tiger red thinfins off big boards, 75' back on one side and 100' back on the other, except one off rigger set at 5'. Most came in 15-20 FOW. Had to leave at 2 PM. Missed one on a bright dark red tadpolly, one miss came on jointed orange rapala the other miss was the tiger red thinfin. Much garbage in the water. Caught 2 plastic bags, one long yellow ribbon and an oak leaf. Great day on the lake. I think some boats did a lot better than we did, but we had a nice day. Looks like maybe next Tuesday or Wednesday before I get back out. Good luck this weekend to all. Duane
  22. Yeah Mike, first trip. Have done a little gill fishing at Gun with mixed results. Some decent gills but hard to find. Duane
  23. Got six lines set at 10 AM a mile north of junk cars. Trolled south to about a mile south of junk cars in 5 to 15 foot of water. Not a tap. Pulled everything and ran south to chalets. Set four lines off big planer boards, two thin fins gold and orange, two tadpollys silver orang and blue silver, a pro-king orange crush on one rigger down 7' and a tee spoon spinner with a another orange proking 3' behind the spinner. Almost immediately took a hit on the spinner/spoon rig. Lost him after a short fight. Went 4 for 6 after that fishing 7'-12' of water from about 1/4 mile north of chalets to 1/2 mile south. Red thinfin with tiger stripes took 3 fish, orange/gold thinfin took 1. All coho about average size for this time of the year. Had two other hits on the red/black stripe thinfins. Ended up fishing three of those. Ran lines off boards back 50' for two of them and 75' for the other two. Fish came about equal off either side. Lake was great till about 2 PM when the SE wind switched to the NW and reall picked up. Rough ride back to the piers. Good day to be out and get the skunk out! Weather sounds pretty nasty for the next week so it may be awhile before we are back out. Tight lines everyone. Duane
  24. Hey everyone, lots of great info! Thanks a lot. I tied up a few today using Robert's Tournement Tie and it was quick and simple! They look great and the video link was really helpful. Thanks again to everyone. Now all we need is some fish in the area. Boats ready, gear is ready and I am itching to get out. Mayby early next week if the weather holds. Duane
  25. Going through the flys and found some that definitly need retying. Bought some 50# mono and have been experimenting with different knots. Nothing that I have tried seems really good so far. Either the lines gets 'curly' from pulling it tight or the hooks don't seem to end up being straight with the fly body with pulled up. How about some ideas? Thanks. Duane
