We were out there yesterday also, Mike. Not a pleasant day to fish. Rough, long ride, hour and a half in my 19' aluminum boat, coming in against that chop. One crew member was chumming by the time we got lines set in 120 FOW. Trolled out to 170 with 4 riggers and 2 cores which is all I wanted to try to handle with a 3 man crew with one of those really not usable! Not one rip or release. Got in close and we fished the pierhead area for a couple of hours and nothing doing in there either. Glad to see you got some fish. Duane

From about the 1st of May on I usually have at least one J-plug in the program. Or a similar type lure like a Silver Horde or the Dream Weaver type. Went 3 for 6 Saturday AM out of South Haven and all but one of the hits and fish came on that type of lure in glow colors. First time I've ever run the DW type and took 1 fish and one other hit on it. Have always had good luck running that type of lure, especially from this time of the year on. Duane.

Sounds like a great evening! I fished perch out of South Haven yesterday and noticed a boat out there named Summer School. Were you out there?

I run and like the big boards for early coho fishing when fishing identical set ups on a side. Usually I have a different set up for each side, but identical for that side. Once its time to switch to varying set ups, in lines go into the package. Works for me. Got to stay flexible whichever way you go and be ready to change as conditions and fish dictate. Duane

Took a couple of hours to find perch but finally in 61 fow about straight out from the north end of the first dune to the south of piers we did hit on some. They didn't come real fast but in 3 hours we had 53 with most of them good size female. Largest was 11 3/4" and the smallest was 8". Most were in the 8-10"+ range. Minnows on a three hook perch fly jig with a june bug spinner on the bottom hook. Duane

Fished from 8:30 AM to 2 PM. Went 7 for 8 with 6 kings from 3# to 5# and one laker about 5#. Laker came on ProKing double orange crush down 80, one king came on free slider on the 80 down rigger with a carmel dolphin, 2 came on full core with blue/green dolphin ProKIng Magnum, one came on ProKing regular size orange crush down 70, two came on 1/2 core with a pearl/green ProKing. Missed one on FC with a magnum ProKing double orange crush. Marked a lot of fish in the 90-100 range and that is where all of our action came between 9:30 and noon. Not a hit after that. Fished primarily between the big dune to the south and the power plant. Great weather on the lake. Duane

Set up in 65 FOW at 8:30 AM. Trolled out to 115 with nothing happening, turned back to the SE and picked up a 3# king on Blue E-chip flaser/blue fly down 32' on rigger in 106 FOW. Kept headed SE and at 90' picked up a 10# king on full core with a Pro_king magnum green blue dophin. Worked that area for a couple of hours and picked up a 3# steelie off flatline 100 back of big boards with a thinfin gold/orange. Also missed one on this. Missed a hit down 65' on a Carmel dolphin. Picked up a 7# king on the same full core that went before. Wrapped 'em up at 1:45 PM. Lake started out being choppy and kinda tough fishing but ended up being real nice out there. Marked and caught most of our fish between 85-95 FOW. Duane

Had the wrong date on previous post, should have been for Saturday the 17th. Wind was still really strong out of the NE but we fished 7 hours Sunday with only 1 fish. A 3# brown taken on flatline 60 back with a reef runner rainbow/purple. Long rough day on the lake. On Monday the wind was much more manageable and we fished mostly just off shore near and around the Wind Point lighthouse. Went 7 for 12. Had a tough time getting 'em in the boat. 2 real nice browns at 13.7 and 13.1 pounds. Most of the rest were in the 3-5# range. Came off riggers and Pro-King spoons, reef runners, jointed orange rapalas and husky jerks off the flatlines. The jointed rapala took 3 of the fish boated. Tuesday was a great looking day. A little breeze and the first fish came as we were letting out the first flatline, a 3.5# brown. Then went 2 hours with not a tap. Caught a 3# brown on Pro-king green/red spoon off the rigger 40 back and 10 down, and the last fish was a 7.5# brown that came off the flat lines with a reef runner BareNaked model. And that was it for the day of 7 hours of fishing. Great trip, great fishing and great to be out there enjoying things with a son and grandson. 19 browns and one coho for the total of 20 for 25.

Fished from 8 AM to 3 PM. Strong NW wind kept us from getting N of Wind Point wherre we did really well on nice size fish last year. Picked up 3 just S of the point and 6 more in front of the harbor mouth. Biggest were 5.7 and 5.8. 3 came on DR down 12-15' and the rest came off flat lines off big boards back 60-80'. Bumblebee and Double Orange crush Pro-Kings took the 3 on the riggers and reefrunners and husky jerks took the ones off the flat llines. Hoping to get out tomorrow N of the Point in the wind lets us. Great day on the lake with a son and grandson,,,,and nobody fed the fish even as bad as conditions were. The boys did a great job with setting up, playing the fish and getting them in the boat. 9 for 9! Duane

Set lines at 8 AM about 1/2 mile south of pumping station in 20 FOW. Ran five flat lines off big boards and 4 DR lines. Went 5 for 8, quit fishing at 2 PM. First fish was steelie about 6# off downrigger at 10' with Pro-King Bumble Bee. Next was a small coho maybe 2# off flat line 100 back Thinfin, gold/Black Next was a coho of about 4# off flat line 100 back Thinfin, red/tiger stripe Next was a king of about 7#, DR at 10' with a Pro-King double orange crush Next was a king of about 9#, DR at 15' with a silver/orange Pro-King. This fish came in the river water in about 35 FOW. Ran all lures off riggers about 35-45' back. Took two fish just south of pumping station in 22 FOW, and missed two there. Took the other two just north of the large retaining wall in 22 FOW. Missed the other one in the same area. Water temp out to about 40' was from 43-44 degrees. In the river pool it was as high as 50 degrees. Kind of slow for this time of the year there, but maybe all the wind scattered them the previous week. Duane

From what I have seen in the newspapers, next year you can pay $10 extra for your license plate and that gives you special access to all state parks and all DNR launch ramps. Duane

I think the sign is referring to an annual DNR prermit for $24. Allows you to launch at any DNR ramp. At Benton Harbor I've always done what you have done. If someone is in the booth I pay the $6, or buy an annual for $24. The annual is the way to go for me since I go out of Holland and Port Sheldon quite a few times each year, and there is usually someone there to collect. I checked at the Otsego DNR office last year and they told me the only place to buy these was at the ramp booth? Duane

All coho up to maybe 3# Duane

Started setting lines at 9 AM. Had three flat lines out on big boards and was letting the fourth out when a fish hit it. Finally got 4 lines (running these 100' back) out on the boards and two on downriggers. A circus for two hours. Had one triple and got them all in. Ended up going 8 for 10. 7 came on the board lines and one on DR down 9'. All were caught on thinfins or thinfish tiger/red and gold with black back. Then we could not buy another hit until we were pulling lines. One was off before we got to the rod and the other made his escape at the back of the boat. 9 to 11 AM was hot and then we just lost 'em. Tried out to 45 FOW, but nothing out there. All fish had empty stomachs. Temp in close was 39 and past 25' was 37. 41 in the river. Called it a day at 1:30 PM. Duane

Anyone hear any news about the fishing down there yet? Was pretty slow in New Buffalo last week. Sure would like to have some info before driving that way again. Although sometimes the only way you know is to go! May have to do that. Thanks for any info, Duane

36 perch out of GL between noon and 3 PM today. Mostly all females full of eggs, but not much size to 'em. Had one 10" and several 9s, but most ran between 7-8". Steady action, threw back at least twice as many as I kept. About 250 yds NE of Yankee Springs launch ramp in 7.5 FOW. Used fathead minnows on slip bobber. Back tomorrow but not keeping any under 8. Tough cleaning those little devils. Duane

Fished from 9:30 AM to 2 PM and went 4 for 4. 5# steelie on gold/red thinfin, 2# coho on red thinfin, 2# coho on red thinfin, 4# brown on gold/red thin fin. All fish came off big boards back 100'. No hits on any of the four downriggers. Water temp in lake was 33.5. Fished from 8 FOW to 50 FOW. All fish came in about 20 FOW. Marked very few and just a little bait near the river mouth. Trolled south after a few passes in front of the breakwater with nothing happening there. Went south 3.5 miles and then trolled back toward NB. Only 3-5 other boats out and one that was pulling out when we did said they had three. Great day on the lake but mighty slow. A couple of weeks for the water to warm up and it should be hot fishing down there. Duane

If you are targeting browns, I'd sure run some reef runners in your mix. The ghost pattern has really worked well for me. Shallow running model back of boards 50-100'. Duane
