  1. Launched at 5:30. Set down in 60 straight out. First fish as setting the second rod. Got 4 in the first 2 hours and then picked away at 4 more until about noon. 8 for 9 total. No real program. Fish hit all presentations running 6 rods from a 1/2 core to 76 down. All kings from shakers to 13lbs. Green and blues for colors. Surface temps were 47-49. 85-100 fow was where we got bit

  2. Correct. It actually has to do with the predator prey relationship between the phytoplankton, zooplankton and planktivores(Salmon prey) Low light conditions are perfect for all species to prey on and have less predation at the same time. The angle of the sun causes light to only penetrate the upper water column. This allows predators to attack from the darkness below into the light. The low light levels also give the prey a better chance against sight feeders than full daylight. Upper level schools will form to help against predation. Since most Great lakes planktivores are sight feeders, night feeding is low where they could have the best chance for survival.

All this adds up to high concentrations of active baitfish and good predation characteristics in the upper water column for the salmon. They can see the food and it is concentrated for them. So they instictively are in active feed mode during that time whether there is bait around or not

  3. I'm no help Nick cause I got blanked when I fished there for a day a few years ago. One thing I can tell you is a navionics or lakemaster map is mandatory!! Bottom goes up and down very fast. I was over by sleeping bear and went from 140 to 35 in too short of time to get all my electrics up. I'd guess it was 20-25 seconds at trolling speed. Over by the islands looked like the same stuff.

  4. LAKERS DONT SMOKE WELL?????? That is all we do with lakers. It's the only reason to keep those greasy chickens. One thing you might want to try is to not brine them so long (like normal salmon). Since they are greasy they are salty as well and we only brine them for a few hours as opposed to longer with Kings.

I agree! I keep every laker I can get my hands on to stick in the smoker. By far my favorite smoked fish:)

  5. Take and double the velcro around the one of the bottom strands of the net bag and stick it to itself. Then put a piece on the handle in the appropriate location for your net bag and stick on. For added druability on the net handle i wrap each end of the velcro with electical tape....Keeps the net bag from dragging and works much better than a release IMO....Its very quick to reset.

Adam this is the best idea I've ever seen for this issue

  6. Ended up 7 for a whole bunch. Broke one fly and had lots of knock offs and 1-2 second dipsey rips. Probably 10. We thought we were just seeing things or the releases were being weak but heard similar stories from everybody at the launch so I'm pretty sure they were fish.

We found cold water at the 65 down mark in 100-115 fow. Took 6 of the 7 on spoons from a 7 color to 103 down. 90-100 down took the most hits. All kings 6-17lbs. Very fat fish!

  7. Thanks Ken,

The fish were snapping if you could find them. I went 21 for 26 over Friday and Sat. Just couldn't find the big guys Sat. Doesn't matter though cause the event is the most exciting part of my year. Months and months of planning and worrying, getting sponsors, hoping we'll get boats signed up and them BOOM! it's all over in a flash and a blur. I love hearing guys had a good time and enjoyed the tourney. We had a number of teams this year that fished it for the first time cause guys from last year recommended it. Hopefully that happens again:)

  8. We received a few more late entries. If anyone else wants to get in under the wire we can get you in if you can have the check in the mail by this Monday.

Thanks again to everyone who signed up!!!!:drinks:

  9. I understand your logic but if you fish these events for the chance at money you'll always have a chance at being disappointed. The friendships and company are the real payoff. But again I understand the cost to get there is a hard pill to swallow.

Fishing should be good out of PS July 11:grin:
