Don't give up, baby! Took us awhile to get 'em. Still learning for sure. Some quick cheap tips. Fresh not super thick line for better lure action. We use 15# mono and seem to get a few more hits and wife landed a 25# king with drag not tight. Keep changing Speed and Direction, lures, changing downrigger depths, changing copper or lead core reels. Don't let boredom set in if no hits. Check YouTube "Reel to Reel" - Ludington salmon Charter that partners with Capn Chuck tackle shop. Showed video of six fish on at once yesterday? He claims that Speed and Direction are most important of all, especially when fishing deep. Crazy currents deep this year especially. That'll negatively affect your how your lures run huge, and sometimes when we do SLOW 180 turn (without tangling lines, or not watching traffic enough again) the downrigger cables straighten out and we start getting a few hits!
Few years ago, I saved up enough money, and during winter bought a Fish Hawk. Improved our catch rate more than anything else I ever bought. Just be careful not not cut off cable with kicker. I've never done that, of course, but I've heard of a few idiots who did...
