I'm a Thompson guy, but I believe you have to throw Penn Yan into the mix as well. I know quite a few guys here on Lake O with 245 Contenders (24' Penn Yan HT) and they are awesome fishing machines. Tim

I had this pic e-mailed to me from a friend. I don't know the guy that caught it. 44 lbs on a spring type scale (not certified), caught up by the dam on 9-21-09. Imagine if it was a hen That's 2 40 lbers Niagara County has produced so far this year. This one is probably one of our Olcott Pen Reared fish (4YO from the 2005 Pen) Tim

Dad and I started out the morning fishing for perch in the harbor by the boat. A few fish in there, but not in heavy yet, we got 4 or 5 fish. At 0800 we hopped in the boat and headed out. Nothing happening inside, so we pointed the boat North and started trolling offshore, found a nice pocket of active fish between the 24 line and the 26 line, ended up 4/6 with 2 nice teenage kings and 2 steelhead landed. Kings were around 12 and 14-15 lbs and one nice chunky steelhead around 6-7 lbs. Nice to catch silver kings this time of year. All rigger/spoon bite steelie stomper stinger took both kings on the 60' rigger and lazer spooked NK28 blue thunder took both steelies on the 50' rigger. Temps were crazy, we had 65deg down 50 feet and still 64 deg at 100 feet, the teenage kings were way up out of temp in the 65 deg water. The steelie had a right pectoral fin clip. I thought the only steelhead the DEC was fin clipping were the skamanias, but this fish was clearly not a skam, looked more like a domestic bow. Interesting coloration on the bow, very, very lightly spotted. Dad with the 15 lb teenager The steelhead/bow East wind kicked up and made it a little snotty out there, but all in all, not a bad day for us, it sounded on the radio like most struggled out there today. and if no one weighs in a fish of a particular species, that 100 carries over to the next day. I believe there was a heck of a pot in the brown trout division that went uncollected at the end of the derby. Tim

I had my friend John and his son Joe out with me today out of Olcott. we had a good day. Set down in 50 FOW and immediately had a great picture so we started trolling North west and setting lines. Trolled all the way out to 270 and took 1 nice steelhead on a slider on the 50 foot rigger, ss nbk. At 270 we turned back in and started trolling SW back towards the red barn. Shortly after completing the turn, nice mature on a stingray NBK on the wire diver, 100 back on a 2. Ended up working a N and S troll all day ending up a little East of the Microwave. We ended up with 14 or 15 fish landed of 20 bites. Boxed a mix of mature and teenage kings, some nice coho in the 7-8 lb range and a couple steelies. Released a number of other steelhead. John's son Joe got his first 20+ lb king today. Early on, the NBK spoons were on fire, but they dried up fairly quickly. As the sun came up, flashers and flies started taking over mountain dew SD with green crinkle howie took 6 hits on the probe rigger down 70. Wire diver back 160 with various flashers took a number of hits and the 400 foot copper took hits both with a green 8" hot spot flasher and green crinkle fly and green double crush glow SD and Atommik T86 Packer Fly. Pretty much anything green got bit today, NK28 watermelon took multiple hits on the rigger at 50 and 40 feet. Years ago, Luhr Jensen used to make a size 2, which were killer for browns. I don't think they've made them in years other than by special order. Tim

Joe's Pirate Spoons were created by Joe and Shirley Riefer, who used to operate a charter out of Oak Orchard, NY. They are now retired and run the www.attheoak.com website. A number of years ago, they sold out Pirate Spoons to Renosky, who still produces them. Pirates have always been and continue to be very popular on lake Ontatio. Tim

I'm real partial to scotty releases, which are pinch pad style releases. No false releases and the way they make them with nice long tethers, even shakers are clearly telegraphed to the rod so you're not dragging them around. Tim

I didn't take a ton of pictures this year, but here's a couple really pretty steelhead from this summer: Dad with a nice 10.5 lber from labor day, this one was one half of 2 double headers that day (lots of fun with 2 of us in the boat, gotta love autopilot here's a nice thick bodied steelie from back in July, this one weighted 11 lb 7 oz on the derby scale. Stayed on the leaderboard of the Summer LOC derby here on Lake O until 3 days from the end. Tim

Yes, that would be the minutes of lattitude (middle set of numbers: xx.XX.xxx) since the south shore generally runs SW-NE how far that is offshore depends on what port you are fishing out of. At Olcott (my home port), port is approximately at the xx.20.3xx or so line, so 26-27 would be 6-7 miles offshore. As you head East, those numbers get far closer to shore. Tim

Captain Tom is a very experienced on fishing Kings on the Niagara Bar area and will share the techniques he utilizes to consistently hook up Kings for his Charter customers. This meeting, held in the middle of the Spring LOC Derby, is a must attend for anyone fishing this Derby as the current fishing conditions will be shared with all at the meeting. LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing project at Olcott.
