Port Sheldon. Mooching. Take 2.

I'll split this report into 3 sections, because we did a few things. Section 1 - Trolling - Trying to Find Fish Wanted to try something different, so brought my whole cured alewives and herring for a mooching trip. But first we needed to find some fish to work.We started trolling around 7 pm and trolled until 8:30 going 1/2 with a nice king on a meat rig in 93 fow, and another nice fish on a flasher fly that spit the hook in 105 fow. We were marking fish and bait at 8:30 so we stopped to try mooching. Section 2 - Mooching The two of us rigged up with a 3 and 4 oz weight and 6 foot leads, one with an alewife and another with a herring. Got the bait spinning nicely and started dropping and reeling the bait back up. We were in 90 fow. Between 8:30 pm and 9 pm we had about a dozen follows, but no hits. Right at 9 pm, the bait and fish seemed to disappear. So we ran in quickly to 55 fow to see if the fish had moved in. Worked back out to 70 fow slowly and didn't see a single big fish swim through, so we gave up on that mooching for the night. Section 3 - Glow Spoon - Moon Program At 1030 or so we switched over to a mag moonshine glow spoon program. Trolled out to 140 fow and hit 1 fish in 120 fow on a carbon 14 around midnight (diver back 55 feet). On our way back on a NNE troll, we too two more fish around 100 fow. Carbon 14 on the same diver, and a Double Trouble on a 150 copper took a fish. Right at 1 am, the moon got covered up by a cloud bank so we pulled lines and called it a night. All kings were 10-16 lbs, and very lively at the boat. Going to try mooching again, but this time will try to start earlier in the evening.

Love the schools of coho. Make a great day when the kings aren't interested. -

Went to Little Point last night to try something out. Always wanted to get fish offshore without trolling. Gave mooching a shot. Method I used is a whole alewife on a 6 foot leader with a 3 oz weight. Drop it to the bottom and then reel it back in. Alewife helicopter spins Well, it works for coho. Had a tough time keeping them hooked but landed 1. Had maybe 5 or 6 bites? -
Got my 5 fish but not how I expected. Started at 430 and went south. In 60 fow I was marking no fish no bait so I started moving deeper. Hit a nice coho at 5:30 am. And started getting steady bites. Overall went 5/11 I think. Started with a diver back 50, and downrigger at 25 with glow spoons. After 6:30 flasher flies started working on diver back 50 and downrigger at 35. Last fish bit at 11. Just for kicks I dropped a flasher fly down 105 and got bit shortly after. I'm pretty sure all the other bites were coho. And I saw multiple fish chasing bait on the surface. Found fish in 125-180 fow. 2.0-3.3 speeds.

Fished this morning setting lines around 5:45 in 100 fow. Worked between 130 and 180 several times and ended up going 8/9. 4 kings, 2 steelhead, 1 coho, 1 lake trout. Speeds 2.0-3.3. Downrigger 35 down - RV Mongolian beef Downrigger 55 down - RV Double Trouble Diver back 85 - 10" SD White Double Slick w/ Meat Rig 150 Copper - Rasta Goose Super Slim Diver back 95 - 10" SD White Double Slick w/ Meat Rig Diver back 105 - 10" SD White Double Slick w/ Meat Rig Diver back 135 - 10" SD White Double Slick w/ Meat Rig Downrigger 55 down -RV Mongolian Beef 150 Copper - Rasta Goose Super Slim Had a great morning out there. First 6 bites were before 7:30 am. Last 3 spaced out between 7:30 and 10 am.

Last minute trip. Couldn't not go given the wave conditions and how good the fishing has been. Fished from 7:30 until 10 pm pretty much straight out of Holland in 90-120 fow. 110 fow was best for us. Did a good job of finding the fish, just not a great job getting them in the net. Ended up 4 for 12. Two 15 lbs, one 8 lbs, one 6 lbs - all kings. Mag diver with meat back 115 was hot - 5 hits. Mag diver with glow spoon took 2 hits. Mag diver with flasher fly took 1 hit. Downrigger down 45 with standard moonshine took 1 hit 250 copper took 2 hits. Also tried a slider on a downrigger with a whole alewife - it got hammered but the hooks didn't catch. I'm going try that again. There's a way to hook the alewife so it spins pretty good. Had lots of fish swim into and attack our stuff based on Livescope imagery, but hooks were not sticking. Had a great time out there again.

Thought that was you a little north and inside of us. -
Went out this afternoon lines in the water around 5:30 pm. Started looking for fish around the sliders in 100-130 fow. And pretty much stayed in the all night trolling SSE, SSW - with SSE and S trolls picking up the most bites. What worked? Well pretty much everything. Ended the night at 10 pm. Went 12/18. Earlier on it was 350-400 coppers, and mag divers back 165. Then switched to 300-350 coppers, and mag divers back 135. Then downriggers 55-75 started hitting. Only thing that didn't get hit was the plug we put out on the 200 copper. I'd say we had 4 hits on meat rigs, 6 hits on flasher flies, and 8 hits on spoons (moonshines). Speed 2.0 to 3.0 mph at the ball.

They may have been shallow, or they may have been spread out. I marked bait everywhere, but not heavy schools of bait like a week ago. -

I know there are fish around. We just didn't set up on them last night. Talked to a few other boats that were in the 5-10 bites range.
