  1. Well the gods have conspired against me yet again :( or at least the people working our new software program, seems their 7 weeks into a 5 week project and almost 50% done  Makes you feel good huh. So my trip to Oswego has been postponed "for a long time" Hows the ice fishing out there ????? Maybe I'll just try and throw together a long weekend trip, so I can say I did it.:D

  2. Midway,

Are you going to be bringing your boat in June? My boat is in Henderson for the summer or else I would offer to use mine. Let me know I might be able to get in touch with a buddy of mine for his boat. Let me know.

    Rich

No I didn't plan to bring teh boat in June, just the 3 weeks in July. would love to get some info during the june trip though

  3. Yes....You did it! However....this is going to end up in another debate. I notice on this picture name in the gallery that it says Lake Trout. Everyone knows I know how to misidentify fish  I think this is a Brown Trout.

    Still....its a very nice fish!

Now if one of these fish identify experts on the site will identify it.....

AS much as it pains me to agree with Mike, it looks like a nice brown to me also

  4. Hey are any of you Ontario Fishermen going to be in the Oswego area the week of 19 June?? Got a week of "prep" training before the july actual training and would like to do a little Meet & Greet with some of you local guys to get a general "lay of the land" so to speak.

Please let me know, I'll be staying at the Captains Quarters (?) Best western I think.

  5. Have you heard a final date on when you will be heading to NY? Wish I could go with you.

As the schedule is now, I go out for the week of 19 June, then back out for the last 3 weeks of July. Planning to take the boat in july, hoping to tie into some of those monster kings.

  6. Made it out with Steve (Running Arends) and Steve (Huntingfool43) this morning. Hit the lake about 6am ran out to 80 fow and started setting up... Worked out to 140 then flipped course. Overall 8 for 13 (Threw back a small greaser Kept a @12# greaser) Yellow/green PK on a rigger, double orange crush Raider on 1/2 core and blue bubble fly on a tin can were our most productive. Fish were scattered all over the area and up and down the water column. Fishing was slow and sporadic but after the weather we been having, the lake was almost mill pond smooth.

Thanks for going along Steve's :D :D

  7. I started with 2 cannnon manual sport troll's, used them for years and just last year bought a pair of mini-mags electrics on ebay. Extremely happy with them. I'm planning on buying another set of electrics and playing swap between boats.

  8. I have not fished alone in a while since I found some good peoples via the internet who carry the same interest in the sport as I do. It use to be a regular event to see me by myself out on lake Michigan chasing down salmon and the likes.

Actually, the things you ask are relatively easy, if you are set up for it! I have a Lund 1775 PRO V Deluxe, single counsol. I run 2 electric riggers and would have dipsy out as well. That may change as the fish determine!

Boat control is easy, position your boat in such a way the wind, waves and current will keep it on a strait heading. If your steering should be "loose" you can use a bungy cord, I like to call it a poor mans auto pilot, and hold it steady. This will help you to get your lines set.

Once they are all in, I would turn my seat to face the back and watch rods! The close proximity of everything in a boat of this size is great for solo trips. Cruise around looking for some action untill you hit a fish!

When a rod pops, first you jump on it! Then as your fighting this fish you determine what you need to do based on the fight he gives you. Most of the time you can decide right away. If a smaller fish is on you can pretty much bring it in with no problem. However, a bigger fish is where you need to take action. Try and get your boat in the same position as when you set lines. Let the water help you to control your boat.

Now you need to get this big fish in a net! He will do everything possible to screw it up for you!

I will take a little more time getting it to the boat, this helps to wear it out and make things a little easier. There would usually be one side of the boat that is open. No rods out. That is where I want to net the fish. Along side. I have a longer handle on my net, with the rod in my left hand and the net in my right, I lay the handle on the gunnal for leverage. When the fish gets close enough I slip it under the fish and raise the net to get him in it. Then I will put the rod in a holder or lay it down to hoist the fish in the boat!

With my set ups spinnies and flies on dipsies are no problem while netting. I keep my leaders between the dipsy and spinnie at 4 feet in length, with the fly being a couple feet behind the spinnie that only leaves you with 7 feet or so of line left out of the rod tip.

There are some little things that you may adapt to your boat and style of fishing but this is what I have done in the past and had little problems.

Fishing solo on big water for big fish is not as complicated as some may think. And some days it can be just what the sole needed!

    Good fishing!

    Rick

I agree with Rick on everything he's said. I used to fish my Islander by myself out of Waukegan/Great lakes area. Only thing I would have to add is I stayed well away form the crowds and would only go out in lite wind/wave conditions. Meant less trips but I still got out fishing.

  9. I seem to not be able to log onto fish chat tonight. Any ideas as to why???

I type in my username and password and it tells me I do not have permission to enter. First time this has happend for me.:(

    Who did I pi$$ off now? ;)

    Hey Matt,

The list must be long and distinguished. It still lets me in.:D I only have a long list:rolleyes:

  10. I am looking to purchase a new fish finder. I have 2 hand held GPS units so I don't need one equipped with GPS. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is color important? What about 3-D? I was hoping to keep the cost around $400.00 I would love to hear some opinions before dropping the kind of cash these things cost.

Color make a HUGE difference... I see Mark (adjusted) has his old unit for sale, a real nice unit for a good price.
