  1. Fall fishing can be phenomenal . Search around here and you will find some great info on fall big water fishing. Steelies, coho & kings.....on the right days you can barely keep up with the action. Short cores, coppers, dipsys, and riggers will all get the job done.:thumb: one of the best parts of fall fishing is that there is virtually no traffic. I remember 2 years ago running 21 miles offshore to the surface temp break to get the fish. Water temp was huge in deciding where to fish. Good luck....keep us posted on your efforts, we love to hear about it

  2. Took the opportunity Saturday to hit the bay in search of perch! Buddy Brent and FishingMachine2 hopped on the Husky Jerk for an adventure. Despite a mediocre wind/weather report we headed out to perch waters. We anchored down on a waypoint that has been producing some tasty perch. Didn't take long and we were into some action, WHITE BASS ACTION!....Mixed in with the white bass was some sheep, some maybe legal walleye and perch. With the unstable weather the bite was tough. We fished all day and kept about 40 perch. Some nice perch in the mix, along with some dinks that buried the hook and had no chance for survival, so they went into the cooler too. FM2 really had the hot hand for sheepshead :thumb:, he was showing us how it is done! Very fun day with some good people, don't get much better than that....:thumb:

Some of the smaller perch were inhaling the hooks with little to no chance of survival, they cleaned up just fine along with the larger fish

Baked some perch in the oven, rolled in flour, rolled in olive oil, seasoned with paprika and parmesan cheese...and it was fantastic.

  3. We adjust or leader lengths to match the rod length. Because I don't want 5-10' of line still out there when my dipsey diver hits the end of my rods.

As far as fly to flasher, we run 18-24 inch leads from flasher to fly.

I experienced some of my best diver action with long leaders, 10-15', and at that point it was time to learn the trick to handline an angry fish the last few feet. Point being it increased the hits on my divers.

  4. Chris,

We didn't venture far from where we were picking up fish. South troll seemed to produce more bites. As soon as we would get "get out of the fish" I insisted to turn right around and go back through them, it seemed to work. At about 930ish, the bite slowly died, but that's when our meat on the dipsy started taking fish. Good day to be on the water, and the action was just what I was looking for.

  5. Very nice - great action and some good clean family fun.

Indeed. I don't have much time, and I don't have the opportunity to fish with my brother in law often, we used to fish together frequently. It sure was nice getting back on board with a crew that works well together.

After fishing we were coming through the channel in Onekama, and on the Portage Lake side of the channel, on the north side of the channel was a nice sand bar. We cleaned fish, ate lunch and loaded up us four adults and the 6 kids and headed to the sandbar for some fun in the water. We were all by ourselves, Sunday we went back to the sand bar, and there was a handful of other boats like us taking advantage of the great weather :thumb:

  6. Family trip to my sister's place in Onekama for the extended weekend. Made sure we had one trip planned for salmon on the big lake. Saturday was the morning. Slight north wind, greeted by 1-3' seas from the north. Went straight out to 100' of water and deployed the spread. It didn't take long and we were taking hits. Big white paddle/river side fly parked at 92' down on the rigger was the stand out of the morning taking multiple hits. We worked 120-150fow doing tight loops near the waypoints we marked as we were taking hits. Had 2 doubles and almost a triple. As the morning bite tapered off the wire mag diver back 185 with a meat rig started taking hits, as BillP mentioned, multiple fish came unbuttoned on the divers. Ended the morning about 1145 with 7 fish in the box and losing another 7 fish. Big king was 22#, and the coho were beautiful. All fish had good amounts of bait in their bellies.

  7. The biggest factor working against you is lack of time on the water. This is a great thread with good information that should help cut the learning curve. Experience is the best teacher, if you have an opportunity to get out with another fisher, DO IT. Over time you will gain knowledge through your experiences. It's like anything else, it just can't happen quick enough. Don't get frustrated, keep your eye on the prize and remember that you're out there to have fun. Good luck. :thumb:

  8. Wigglers always worked well on lakes we fished in the UP in summer. Our problem was getting the things. Tough to get up north in the summer as all the "southern" bait shops would buy up what was available.

Agreed, and I have not been able to locate any wigglers either this summer. When I was buying minnows Saturday, there was a cooler next to minnow tanks labeled wigglers....low n behold....EMPTY
