  1. Well I'd be happy to contribute towards gas and bring some snacks....seems very fair. So next time you are looking for a rider (any of you) send me a PM and if I can get away I'd love to go. Can't do it this weekend though ....got to get ready for heading up to Little bay de Noc the following Thursday morning. hoping the walleyes are biting. Fair warning, I've never done the kind of fishing you guys do for trout etc, so I'd need schooling.... good news is I don't get seasick.
  2. I'm curious when someone has room for a person in their boat to go fishing, what is required/expected of the guest? (Other than being courteous) Cost? Equiptment? etc.
  3. We have one ( Rival seal a meal) we use to do up our garden produce, meats, and fish. It is wonderful and I'm glad we got it. Only glitch seems to be the seal sometimes doesn't get fully sealed (rare) and you can see all the air isn't out....nice thing is, you just cut a little off with the scissors and seal it again. We found by putting a little paper toweling in just before sealing it seems to absorb moisture making a better seal. Write on the outside with a felt marker what it is and the date you did it.....and you are done.
  4. I'll be leaving here Sept. 23 and coming home that Sunday. I am meeting some friends from Northern Minnesota....there should be about 6-8 of us fishing out of 3 boats. I lived next to Garden Bay on Big Bay de Noc for 22 years.....love that area, thats why I keep going back. I'm sure hoping to bring back a story and pictures of our trip. If I have anything worthwhile I'll be sure to post a report.
  5. And man did I get some today! My wife and I went to Cabelas in Dundee to see them all in person, and what I thought I wanted turned out not to be....not cause the 788 wasn't a good unit, but because after a hour and a half with an extremely helpful employee named Bill in their fishing area I got to test drive them all. Bill would not persuade me in which one to buy, but after trying them I found the easiest for me and my limited electronics abilities turned out to be the Lowrance units. It was between two and my wife chimed in with the rebates, in store coupon, etc.....the HDS5 Lake Insight was my best bang for the buck. Now I had no intention of buying one today, but my wife insisted considering rebates, etc.....(who am I to argue with my bride)....and my upcoming trip to Little Bay de Noc that there was no time like the present....so one followed me home today. Thanks everyone for your suggestions/help.
  6. Thanks, that explanation was easy enough for me to understand. Any suggestions where to look for them at a price near 500.00? I go to Cabelas and Gander Mtn., but they aren't offering them at that nice of a price.
  7. I need a little schooling, I am looking at upgrading from a fish finder to a fish finder /GPS Combo. A friend reccomended a 788 Hummingbird so I looked it up on Cabelas site and found 3. I have narrowed it down to two (then again I could be open for suggestions), but wanted to know if anyone can tell me the difference between External vs. Internal GPS? Advantages/disadvantages. Whats it's purpose. I'm not one of those people gifted in the electronics and I need to make things as simple as possible. Thanks.
  8. Thanks, I think you hit on several things I have been doing wrong. I just about fill the cooker with oil (canola) , and I probably put too many fish in it at a time.
  9. I need a little guidance on either figuring out what is wrong with my present cooker or reccomendations on one to buy. Last time we cooked fish it could not get the oil to 350 degrees and I let it go for about 45 minutes. Got to about 300 and I decided heck with it and put a batch in.....well that cooled the oil down and it took a long time to get the temp back up. It is one of those fish fryer combos you buy from Gander or Cabelas.....and I must have the only one that is faulty. I had a fresh tank of propane and the valve all the way on but it just didn't seem to get above 300. It's just frustrating and it has to be something simple. Advice please.
  10. Always have rain gear in the boat.....it seems to me that the crappier the weather is, the better the fishing. Also if you are having someone new on your boat (this probably goes without saying) make sure to spend a little time and go over a few things that you feel they should know.
  11. Great video, nice fish, and those smiles can't be removed with a crow bar!
  12. I was looking the other day for "how to tie a crawler harness" instruction website and found this which I thought others might find helpful. http://dns.advnet.net/mkg/harness/Article/HowTo.htm
  13. Hope this works. http://capwiz.com/keepamericafishing/issues/alert/?alertid=16355526&cmCat=email&cm_cat=6089&cm_ven=email-nl&cm_pla=HA-0100&cm_ite=16355526&eid=297016&cmp=I100902A&seg=FI1&cnt=6089&ctb=16355526
  14. September 2, 2010 Dear Cabela's Customer: Occasionally, an issue of such importance arises we feel it necessary to contact our loyal customers. With our fishing rights at stake, this is such an issue. On August 23, 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was petitioned by the Center for Biological Diversity and others to ban lead from ammunition and fishing tackle, including sinkers, jigs, weighted fly lines and components containing lead, such as brass and ballast in lures, spinners, stick baits and other fishing products. On August 27, the EPA denied the petition regarding ammunition, but let stand the petition to ban lead in fishing tackle and has opened a short period for taking public comment. Such a ban would cause prices of fishing products to skyrocket. Alternative metals can cost from six to 15 times more than lead, and most do not perform as well. For many, fishing would no longer be the affordable sport it is now. Please join Cabela's and Keep America Fishing in opposing this ban by submitting your comments to the EPA no later than September 15, 2010. You can easily do so by clicking here. It is a fast and easy way to assure your opinion is heard. Cabela's is working in conjunction with the American Sportfishing Association and Keep America Fishing to protect our tradition and heritage of fishing. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Cabela's
  15. Thanks everyone! My wife and I are enjoying it, but looking ahead to the time when we can buy a bigger one with a cuddy cabin.
  16. Nothing more important than family and that little ones birthday is more than justification for not going. My grandsons birthday is Nov. 14......we missed the opener for deer hunting on his first and second birthday.....now we take him with us.
  17. Question cause I don't want to offend: My boat came with a radio, I know it isn't to be used to just talk about trivial stuff such as movies, what bar to frequent after fishing, or the special at the local diner.... Is it only for emergency use?....what channel? ( I remember in the CB days there was certain channels for the truckers or emergency use.) Do you keep in contact with others about where you are having some luck? I don't know since I never had one, but I am sure you all know what is the preferred way it is to be used. Thanks!
  18. North side. Little and Big bay de Noc.
  19. That's one of the things I'm going to be asking questions about from you all.
  20. :thumb:This is our "new" boat. It is a 1985 Thompson "Cutlass" 18'.6" with a Shoreline trailer. We obviously bought it used, but the previous owner took immaculate care of it. It came with a T-mast and planer boards. We have had it out 5 times since we bought it and it has run perfectly. It has a 4 cylinder motor and a mercruiser outdrive. I am looking forward to taking it up to Little Bay de Noc later this month for walleye. Thanks for looking!
  21. My name is Steve. I live in Eaton County, I also lived for 22 years in Delta County and fished both Little and Big Bays de Noc and practically lived on Garden Bay. I am fortunate that my wife of 31 years loves to fish as much as I do. Our favorite fish to catch is walleye, perch, pike and bluegill. Not much else to say except I hope to be able to learn from you guys/gals.....and if I can, contribute something in return.
