  1. Wow I must be the creep of the board for prefering deeper water. The 210FOW mark was awesome for me last year. The gas getting there and back sucks but the fish are out there.

I spent a lot of time out there too, we made on trip out to 350. that was a long ride back. 16.5 miles.

with the warmer waters we had this year , it meant having to go deep for a while.

  2. Hey guys , do any of you know if there is an adjustment on how easy the main motor will steer. I would like to make it a little tighter as when my son or I move in the boat it tends to drift , it can be a pain because you dont want to be going circles with a full spread behind you.

    its a 2010 115 Mercury optimax.

  3. I think it depends on how much you will be using your boat i have talked to 3 guys that run the coated cable they all said blowback is a issue but a heaver ball fixed most of it .

Not one said thay have had to replace the cable One was goign on year 5 with t he same set up.

One did say he lost the probe but i belive that might have been his fault the way he was talking

I think if your out all the time the investment into the fish hawk is worth it however for weekend warriors im not sold on the extra funds

    Best of luck

    strik

I am sure that lots of us have lost a probe, including me. It happens when you least expect it . It can be a kick in the pants but it will make you learn another lesson out on the big pond.

Ever consider Wisconsin? its still close enough to Illinois to service the boats but a whole lot cheaper to do business. I really like that 160 sportsman.

  5. I have the Depth Raider , wouldn't fish without a probe. As long as you have one . Most differences are due to personal preferences. After you fish with one you will ask yourself how you ever did without one. Most of the guys I know on this side of the pond have the Depth Raider.(Might be because it a local company)

  6. I do not believe you can legitimately compare Convectors with Tekotas. Its just not an apples to apples comparison. That being said.....

I have also been told that the stock inner workings of a Tekota are not up to par with their price - per the technician at the reel repair shop I use. I have not ever been inside one, so I can not speak for this myself. I have however fished many a fishing trips with them and they are super smooth, great reels. Besides price, I have nothing bad to say about them. Shimano, more specifically the Tekotas, have a huge cult following on the great lakes. This is a well deserved reputation but is also fueled by the huge amount of charters and tourny boats using and raving about them. Matt - you are going to get backed into a corner on this argument!

I personally fish all Okuma reels. my Clarions and Catalinas are comparable, in my opinion to any Tekota I have fished with. Unfortunately, Okuma has not been a consistent player in the great lakes reel market. They have been established with their more affordable Convector line. Now with the Clarions/Catalinas reaching and exceeding the Tekota prices, Okuma does not stand a chance.

Josh what numbers are you talking on the Clairions , I was looking at them and they seem to top out about 130.00. The Catalinas start out at 200.00.

The Solterras seem to start at 130.00 also, just dont' know which model numbers you are talking about.

  7. Making a fixture for re spooling line and removing it . it will be able to strip the mono and save the leadcore to be put back on. also measure reliably how much line is on the reel. I have looked at alot of line spoolers and they don't have the capacity to put the line back on ( leadcore).

  8. Thanks to everyone who posted , Its going to be 2 convectors and 2 more magda dx45.

With all the reels I have none of them performed badly. I fish 2-3 times a week weather permitting . Just can't justify the cash for tekotas . I also want to put a convertible top on my boat with side curtains. So I will stick with the convectors.

  9. I have a 17.5 ' boat and most of my rods are 8' 6" the exception is the braided dipsy rods I use are 10'6". this is to get around the 8'6" wire rods. It is personal preference but you may also need to get around other rods in your spread.
