  5. Shu the high speed back fire is ignition related ......worn dist shaft & bushings. Here is the Serria # for electronic conv 18-5297............The cyl head is a 460 Ford.... Block is Merc design..They are right about the fuel & timing , but if you do a reman with the updated lower comp pistons you can run the new fuel with the 8 degrees of timing. We have overhauled them for about 2500.00 seen them for as high as 5200.00 for a reman.... Water pump end of cam shaft is a critical area they do make a sleeve for it
  6. Nice fish Kevin. Its good to see some is still out there banging them...The weather has been good so far. Just about every one up here has hung it up for the year We will have to stay in touch over the next summer so we can gang up on the fish. Leroy

  8. I have tried to pull the oil from a 115 hp Honda but only got about a quart through the dip stick hole. Ended up draining the rest . We use a Tempo Vacum pump on all the IOs & inboards cost is about $75.00 I have tried lots of others and for the money the Tempo has been the best . We have used this pump on over 400 oil changes. My 2 cents..... Leroy
  9. Well we tried to go on the 6th but she was blowing to hard, sat at marina at Grand Portage over nite. Sun morn we left in 3-4 ft wave and thick fog, ran to Rock of ages and setup fished the reefs with only 1 fish. Picked up at 12.00 when fog lifted and ran to McCorrmics reef . It was a little slow to start but then we moved in on a 35 ft reef an were gettig lakers on board lines and riggers steelies on the dipseys. The bite started getting good at 6.00 pm when we had to pull up lines. Ended up with 8 lakers and 1 steelie , biggest at 14lbs . Ran 10 miles back to Grace for camp .Mon thunder storms all day with heavy rain sat at dock. Tues morn left to run back to Grand Portage Heavy seas 8-14 ft wave for most of the 21 mile trip back. The fall colors were great. Only seen 1 other park service boat all weekend . Red spoons worked the best.

  17. Thanks GLF I could not get the pic over here . We are going back to Isle Royal in Oct Hope to get more pics then. The big lakers come in shallow the to spawn then.
  18. Spent 4 days at the island . first day fished Fishermans Reef to Rock of Ages Light house. The Reef produced lots of 2-6 lb lakers mostley down about 50 ft in 70 ft of water. Rock of ages it was a little slower over there, but did get a few more lakers the biggest for the first day was 7lbs kept 4 for supper ended up 23 for 31 . Next day was a Blow day 5-8 ft out of NW did manage 2 small lakers before we had to go in at 9.00. 3 ard day the lake laid down to 2 ft rollers so we ran to the head an set up trided deep for an hr then went into 45 ft of water for a while then headed out and started working the 70 ft ledge . Whent over a school of bait fish an dropped riggers to 65ft an BANG fish on a double landed first fish an weighed while they were fighting the other . First fish weighed 23 lbs the second went 18 lbs We were off to a good start for the day. Then one of the lead lines started going , what ever it was stripped the reel and gone. the rest of the day went well wiyh steady action Til the other lead line went. My oldest boy got the pole and he fought that fish for over an hr had about 300ft to go an it went to the bottom an scrubed the leader on the rocks and gone . But ended up for the day with 5 laker from 13- 23 lbs with a total of 11 in the box . Stayed at Grace Island for the 3 nites . The docks are really high now with the low water. Headed out the last morn only to be met by 6-9 ft out of NW again so we ran the 22 miles back to grand Portage. Was a great weekend but with the low water 1 has to be careful around the reefs and even gettig in to the docks. Best lure we had was Fishlander Pink Floyd it took 70 percent of the fish ,lazy ikes on lead lines were great also.:D
  19. Sounds like you may have gained some weight. Check your water line. I tell my customers to mark it in spring and then check it over the summer . this will tell you if you have gained any water absorbion. Also a person tends to loss track of all the misc stuff that gets brought on board . Yes fouling can lower speeds . Some one does make a fouling paint just for outdrives will post it when i find the name. Leroy
  20. Only a .5 mile to work but put on 5 more miles just running errands & picking up parts.
  21. Sounds like you have more than enough fuel. Test for spark . if no spark unplug black& yellow wire located on port side of engine it is a single Amphenol style connector not to far from power pack this will test your ignition switch & tether. If engine starts or has spark your problem is switch ,tether or may be grounded wire (Warning engine will not shut off with this wire dissconected). If still no spark problem may be in stator or power pack. Hope this helps Leroy
  22. Steelhead are counted in with lakertrout are they not ?
  23. Left Two Harbors at 6.30 ran 8 miles NE up the lake set lines in 300 ftw . Just got everything set an board line went 3lb king Went in to 90ftw dropped a yellow spin & glow with meat on to 80 ft on down rigger 2 min later it whent off 5lb laker . 15 min later release on board line handed pole to a lady that was along an for the next Hour she fought the fish finally got it in the boat 24lb red fin laker we had put out 500 ft of line on that board. Reset everything an then it was constent action the rest of the day when 17 for 23 11 salmon 6 lakers Pink X rapps on dipseys pink foyd spoon & spin & glows were best producers . the big laker came on a purple bomber. Best fishing we have had here all summer .
  24. More than likely you are going to need a new spring & sleeve but test coils first. Spring & sleeve are both the same for forward & reverse. Just a note may want to service water pump & swivel housing to prevent future cooling system problems. Not necessary but may save something down the road. Leroy
  25. GLF is right. Shifter suppys 12 volts to coils when in gear green wire forwards blue wire reverse. OHM reading with wire disconnected at transom is4.5 to6.5 OHM on each coil. If reading is within spec the coils and harness are good. Spring falures are common. Worn spring sleeves wiil cause upper rpm slipage. More info needed about what out drive does or doesnt do to help with diagnoises. Hope this may help. Leroy.
